And before the PS2 was the SNES. And Before the SNES was the NES, which brought gaming to the public PERIOD.

Nintendo still wins this pissing contest.

Pac-man made arcade gaming mainstream, and the arcade industry is dead. The Commodore 64(the best selling computer of all time) made home computer gaming mainstream, and Commodore is defunct. The NES made console gaming mainstream, Super Mario Brothers was the best selling console game of all time until Wii sports. The gameboy made hand-held gaming mainstream, and the DS is continuing that tradition in terms of sales. Sorry Sony, your dominance was just two generations, two great generations, but nothing more.

How is this news? Its just a member of a company praising one of their products and badmouthing a rival.

And before the PS2 there was the PSone, the SNES, the NES, the list goes on and on. I mean you can't really claim one single console brought gaming into the mainstream, especially considering Arcades and PC's had a large factor in games becoming popular; one console sure as hell didn't do it on it's own. It was a combination of all the platforms that got gaming to where it is today.

Does anyone else notice how completely isolated and almost brainwashed most Sony representatives are? I don't think I've seen a press release or statement from them in the last 5 years that didn't leave me with a quizzical look on my face.

Like in their video for the PS3 slim and price cut, they mentioned something like "And now the Play Station 3, the greatest gaming platform on earth, is available for just $300." Is whacking off your ego really necessary?

Wow. A company representative is saying good things about their company! Who knew something like that happened!

Brainwashed Shmainwashed, what are they going to say "The 3rd place console is now getting a cheaper and smaller version of it!" Yup, that'll go well.

*Sigh* Sony just try too hard sometimes, if they made a plain and simple console for a reasonable price and stopped trying to copy Microsoft and Nintendo on the whole, I think they could redeem them selves. No more of this £600 release price for the gaming equivalent of a swiss army knife, it's almost buying a £3000 PC just for word processing.

So, Sony, if you want to dominate another generation, no more swiss army knives.

Oh lord, the hating continues.

The guy is right about one thing though, the ps2 is the greatest selling console in the industry's short history.

And to whoever said that gaming has been deep into the mainstream long before the ps2 has got to be kidding themselves. Until the ps2, gaming was for kids and slackers.

It's not the fact that Sony is saying something good about themselves, it's the fact that they are being completely pretentious and arrogant about it, there's a huge difference.

And to be honest... the Nintendo DS did more to bring gaming to the masses then both the Wii and PS2 combined... But who gives a crap? It's a ridiculous claim whether it comes out of Sony's ass or Nintendo's ass..

They could have just said the play station 3. Other companies don't wank their own ego like that. Other companies don't come out with press statements like this saying "Nuh-uh we did it FIRST! Nintendo is a mean liar! Wahhhhh!". Lets not mention other companies don't put fucking rootkits onto their audio CDs and expect no one to notice. Then react with general surprise when they find out it's illegal.

They're detached from reality.

Sony just winds up coming across as desperate; this is ridiculous. I disagree with him completely because his point is made moot by the fact that the Wii is supposed to appeal to grandma and five-year-old Howie. Casual. Not mainstream.

So, look, find some decent marketing for the PS3, stop trying to discredit and bash other consoles, or just shut the fuck up. This really isn't helping anyone.

Lol thank you. Like I said before, people in here would do well to take a business class. This is that EVERY company, on EVERY industry does. If you want I will explain further, but hey take it however you want. That said, I have to disagree. At best, Sony put gaming a in a more socially acceptable light, while Nintendo brought the 'socially acceptable' to gaming.

Agreed. I remember how, at school, it went from a few (of us) geeks talking about sonic and mario in the corner to suddenly everyone talking about the ps2 football and rally games. Overall the ps2 brought alot of people into the gaming scene and really did kick off the whole gaming revolution. Ofc another console would have filled the Ps2's boots eventually, but its success definately pioneered the gaming market into what it is today.

It was quite funny though, because when everyone was going on about how amasing fifa 98 or rayman was, I was busy blowing people away in counterstrike and starsiege tribes. Alas, it wasn't until the release of the xbox 360 did the world really start to take note of multiplayer gaming, and ofc fall in love with it.

Microsoft gloats all the time about their little box, I'm not surprised Sony got prideful over theirs. And Kaz is right. Ps2 is STILL selling, so it did more than the Wii ever could. Also, despite the shovelware, at least it had the good IPs to make up for it.
