Fair point made by Kaz. I guess this would religate the Wii to tidying up those who can't handle a joypad.
Total bs, cuz everyone knows the only reason anyone wanted the xbox or ps2 is because it wasn't nintendo. Everybody fell into that lame ass 'wanna be different, yet better than you cuz i paid more' canyon. To say that ps2 put games on the mainstream before the wii is utter stupidity. The ps2 came out long before the wii, and by the time the ps2 was out, games were already mainstream, its just the media and everyone else didn't really respect it cuz it was 'just a game' anyone who plays games today, no matter what your flavor is, xbox, ps2, nintendo, knows that games have been mainstream since we started playin'em. Its like this article is saying that movies didn't get popular till CG was invented. LAAAAAAME point made by Kaz. Motion control is just beyond mere mastery of a pad, as proven by sony and MS's recent attempts to get in the club. Don't forget the real reason why you have a 6 button layout, with four as the base, and buttons on the top/back in the first place. And as for that company brainwashing convo, watch the E3 vids closely. See how many times which companies bring up 'the competition' or say phrases like 'of any other system.' Guess who says it the most? Least?

Everyone at Sony's egos have been destroyed ever since the WII started to dominate the market instead of their overpriced PS3. The recent price drop will help, but not much. Sorry Sony, but sticking the Sony sticker on products doesn't make them sell any better.

I think this whole argument stems from a lack of consistency regarding the word "Mainstream".

What does it even mean? I thought Mainstream in the context of gaming meant non-gamers being pulled into gaming through the system.

I think the Wii is the clear winner here, and the PS2 wasn't the "first" to successfully pull non-gamers in. Every generation's success stories (including the PS2) involved tapping into some of that "mainstream" market. If a company sells games to just gamers, they'll probably fail.

Yes, Wii didn't bring gaming into mainstream, PS2 did.. because my dad knows all his favorite titles are on the ps2 like... um... and well... umm... oh wait I guess it didn't. PS2 made gaming a big pop culture fad (Far bigger then it was before) but did not make gaming accessible, nor acceptable to gamers of all ages. The Wii pulled in Elderly folk, adults, parents, children, and all other groups, while PS2 just pulled in the usual batch of gamer variety.

I agree. The PS2 was definitely more mainstream than the Wii, though I think the N64 has the PS2 beat by a big margin.

Okay, let me say first that I'm a huge fan of Sony (fan, not fanboy). Having said that, I think it's pretty stupid to claim something that big for a company that entered the console wars pretty late. Nintendo has been around long that most "gamers" can remember. The PS2 was an amazing piece of software at the time, but definitely not the "pioneering console on non-gamers" it claims to be.

That glory can actually be shared with that ENTIRE generations of consoles. Think about it: Microsoft was gaining a lot of thunder on the Xbox thanks to Bungie's Halo, the PS2 hooked people in with Gran Turismo 3 and other titles, and the Gamecube has it's shining moments as well.

Before those three consoles, gaming wasn't that much of a big thing outside gaming circles. How many people back then would claim to have owned a Dreamcast? Or an N64? Or any systems that were involved in the "Bit Wars"?

Yanno, as more and more time passes I keep expecting Sony to morph into their final form: a one hundred foot tall Arnold J. Rimmer.
