Now, don't get me wrong here, I'm new to The Escapist, having joined a few days after finding the site, so I don't have any type of special relationship and might annoy some people with my views. The site is more interesting and populated by users that are more polite, grammatically inclined and generally open minded and intelligent than the rest of the internet; and I like the site for these reasons.
I see the "PubClub" as simply a money grabbing excersise, like MM is just a publicity one. If people feel that they owe the 'pist money for hosting these forums then good for them, if people want to pay money for the title, well ok it's your money. The site will not be changed by this in itself. The only thing that could change would be the users who have joined the "PubClub" forming some elite clique and posting mainly in the new members-only forum. That would ruin the site.
While I realise the site has private user forums, like PRIATE (I think), from what I gather they are more a place where users can get together with posters they have made friends with, relax and just chat.
(I reserve the right to be categorically wrong, all I know of PRIATE, and private forums in general here, is what overlapped into a user review I read, enjoyed and posted in.)
Meh, a "noobie's" POV on the issue, for what it's worth.
