Most of the people voting FOR the bill admitted to having little-to-no knowledge about it.

Every amendment that would have made the bill less vague/prevent abuse were all shot down. While amendments that made it worse for everyone passed just fine.

The people passing it have not allowed ANY expert on this speak.

The people pushing it can't distinguish the difference between an ISP address or DNS server.

The people pushing it simply will not listen to reason or fact.
So then the interesting question becomes:"Why do they give a shit?" I suspect money's involved, because I'm cynical and generally believe that's all politicians care about.

OT: As a general rule, I don't think a person should be against something they know they don't understand. Benefit of the doubt and all that. Why that isn't standard practice when it comes to making laws is a fucking mystery to me.

Oh yeah, also found this lovely little comic.

Also, the markup will resume on the 21st. This is NOT the vote, but more hearings on it.

Oh it definitely is. If you watch the talks, it's so blindingly obvious the guys pushing this are getting money form the media companies. You can even draw that conclusion just by reading reading how they act [http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111216/03275317104/how-sopa-20-sneaks-really-dangerous-private-ability-to-kill-any-website.shtml].

Either that or they're INSANELY stupid.

I'm not sure what's worse, really.

This affects more than just America which is why it bothers me so much. Think of all the USA sites that could get shut down, now think of all the similar bills all the other countries will pass.

Well, at first I was kind of terrified that this bill was actually even being considered.

Then I looked up the pro-SOPA ads I've heard people talking about, and now I just can't stop laughing. They're hilarious. Hilariously terrifying.
... Now I don't know what to feel.

Did the one who said the internet was "like a series of tubes" there, or is he dead now?

You can bet shit will get violent fast.

I'm not sure if people have posted about it yet, but the hearing on SOPA was yesterday, and oh my god do I want to punch so many congressmen in the face.

Basically, it was a bunch of old white guys who knew absolutely nothing about technology and didn't bother to learn. One congressman said "If I had a dime for every time someone in the hearing used the phrase "I'm not a nerd" or "I'm no tech expert, but they tell me..." I'd have a large number of dimes and still feel intensely worried about the future of the uncensored Internet." The main backer of the bill openly confessed several times he didn't understand how the internet works, yet he acted like all the internet engineers opposing the bill were "wrong".

There was also this juicy quote from a reporter that pretty much sums it up: "If this were surgery, the patient would have run out screaming a long time ago. But this is like a group of well-intentioned amateurs getting together to perform heart surgery on a patient incapable of moving. "We hear from the motion picture industry that heart surgery is what's required," they say cheerily. "We're not going to cut the good valves, just the bad - neurons, or whatever you call those durn thingies.'

This is terrifying to watch. It would be amusing - there's nothing like people who did not grow up with the Internet attempting to ask questions about technology very slowly and stumbling over words like "server' and "service" when you want an easy laugh. Except that this time, the joke's on us."

Almost every single amendment to the bill was blocked without any meaningful discussion and it looks like they're rushing this bill out the door despite the consequences just so they can get it over with.

Does this piss anyone else off, or is it just me?
I'm not sure if pissed even covers it. I feel my rights getting violated and as such I feel violated, that these people are supposed to be representing us is a massive joke, and the worst part is their the only one's laughing about it.

I watched the stream and damn, that was just painful to watch. One of them said, "I have a company in my district that I'm sure you're all familiar with uh... Rosetta Stone. And they make uh... language things..." I'm not sure anymore whether this is an accurate quote but he acutally said "language things".
This just shows why they don't care about this and why should they if the lobbyists fill their pockets with money? Can anyone give a satisfying answer to this?

At least some know what they're actually talking about.

Any site based in America that you visit, if targeted, will be shut down. Meaning you can't visit it anymore. If your site is outside of the US, they'll tell you to take it down, but I'm sure that'll work as well as you'd imagine. Mainly the people issuing the notice laughing at it and not doing that. The result will most likely be that site being blocked from being viewed in the US.

I guess in the short-term, it's bad for everyone. But in the long-term provided other countries don't follow the US's lead, all the innovation and jobs relating to the internet will happen, well everywhere that's not in the US. Most likely Europe.

So short term, chances are it'll be bad.

Long term, seems like it'll be pretty sweet for non-US people. All the sites and jobs will leave the US since it'll be too dangerous to set up shop under SOPA.

Hey, I live in Canada, but I'm worried about it. Partly because I don't want our current government getting any ideas, but because I value everyone's freedom. People who don't understand the internet should not be making decisions about regulating it. Period.

What? I thought it was all steam-powered. Isn't that what everyone here keeps talking about when they talk about how much better Steam is than The Origin?

IAS, they hit the nail on the head with the heart-surgery analogy.

Thank oh THANK YOU FSM, for not making me American!

Thank you for spawning me in the place where porn was first legalized, prostitution is legal, no legal drinking-age exists and most of the noticeable politicians over 50 were once members of the Communist Party and/or hippies.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!

Well, there's this [http://americancensorship.org/modal/state-dept-petition/index.html]. Yeah yeah, I know. "Petitions don't mean shit" and all that, but it's something.

Yes, but not sure about location.

OT: Somewhere along the line I stopped caring. Sorry, but that's just me.

Goes for American sites too, such as YouTube. So you do have something to worry about.

OT: It's just painful to listen to, really.
