Soul Calibur 4. Why are you so awful?

I liked SC4 more than SC3, though the character creator in Sc3 was definitely a step above the one in SC4. I'd also have to put SC2 as the best in the series.

I'm not sure I'll ever forgive Namco for taking like half of my dear Mina's moves out in the transition from SC2 to SC3. *cries*

I actually liked Soul Calibur 4, but thats from a person who has never played any of the others so maybe I just dont have anything to compare it to. Unfortunately I cant seem to find my copy which is upsetting. Ive never lost a game before, kinda makes me sad -sniff-

Because it has only one game mode worth playing, standard vs., nothing else.
Also I have played 350 hours of Soul Caliber 2...yeah.

You see, when you build a house out of shit, it doesn't matter how good your plans are, or how well you shape it, at the end of the day it is just a giant pile of shit.
The reason 4 is bad is because it was built on the previous games. 2 and 3 were bad (never played one so it might be bad too.) ergo; 4 is bad.

I haven't played SC4, but if I were to hazard a guess as to the answer to your question, I would say because very few series in any medium except for the printed page have remained good beyond the 3rd sequel. I've only played SC2 and I loved it, none of the other entries in the series really interested me.

Personally, the only redeeming features in SC4 are:
- online matches (there's only so much of my brother's spamming I cant take in a lifetime)
- character creation system
- improved graphics

Everything else is irrelevant crap. I still maintain that Soul Calibur 1 for Dreamcast was the best. Missions Mode was among the best features I've ever seen in a fighting game, and the art gallery was fucking epic.

I like it, I still regularly play it. It does some things good, there are more character creation options now.
The stats suck though, and they still add alignments to clothing. Oh you like these socks, well, boom your character went from good to neutral. That'll show you for picking those evil, evil socks.
Oh and the lack of original fighting styles sucks too, I miss the greave edges.
I actually thought of an awesome element for the next Soul Calibur game (you know its coming) You take weapon master mode and add created characters instead of actual Soul Calibur ones... boom instant hit. Like you could seriously just take the mode in its entirety from Soul Calibur 2 and just swap out Soul Cal. characters with your own created ones.

Yep, the Golden game of the series was either Soul caliber or it's second iteration. The cube had the best ever.

I accidentally left the disc at home sadly, and haven't played it in a while. It could have been deeper but it was still freakin' awesome.

Darth Vader has nothing on Link.

Well, I actually liked Soul Calibur IV, but I understand what you're saying. Soul Calibur IV took out a lot of good things from the older installments. I have read some comments from other fellow users, some intelligent and some which made me face palm.

All right to anyone that said 'The Series went down hill after the second game.'

That statement sounds a tad melodramatic. The second game was the peak, but saying 'the series went down hill' makes it sound like the game series became awful and unplayable ? which it hasn't. I guess I'll join the rest of the crowd and ***** about SC IV my self. I enjoyed the game, but I won't lie there are somethings that were so half - assedly done it must be bitched about.

Firstly, the games marketing was incredibly inaccurate and deceptive. 'Three new characters.' it proclaimed. Oh really? Lets see, we have Darth Vader who's more like a Cameo, hence that's TWO characters not three. Next we have Amy who was 'technically' a bonus character in the second game and she rips off quite a few of Raphael attacks. So, that's not two but one. And then we take a look at Hilde...well okay, that's legitimate. I'd consider her a new character. So there SC IV has one whopping new character.

The story isn't worth mentioning, Namco probably just gave up and said fuck it. A lot of the endings were dull and stock, and I don't think anyone cared about the story this time around. Oh, right. And Algol is arguably one of the absolute worst antagonists in a fighting game.

Next we have the fact that SC IV's entire fighting system relies on switching character mid battle, yet they don't have that feature for Two players which I find incredibly fucking stupid. I mean, why? Why is it so hard for there to be teams? I've seen SEGA GAMES that's done this far better.

But, lets also take a moment to consider SC 2. Because people can be absolute purists when it comes to games. SC 2 wasn't necessarily perfect either ? it had it's flaws. I vaguely remember this SC 2 character, I think his name was Necron ? SC 2, as good as it is apparently managed to create a character that was so bad he rivals Algol and that's saying quite a lot.

Oh right. I forgot about that.

Algol is by far one of the worst "bosses" I've fought and played. The story mode was too easy on both difficulties. Only TOLS was hard

I've just noticed this now.

I liked Necrid. He at least was playable and had a decent combo set and move list where as Algol...yeah.

Hey everyone! Look at the cool kid!
Movie released straight to DVD: garbage.
Fighting game released straight to console: garbage.
Sure, there might be a few exceptions but that is the rule.

SC2 was my favorite. I could care less about all the other crap that was added I'm just talking game play here. SC2 had (in my opinion) tighter and more balanced game play. It was a lot less mash friendly than SC3. SC3 was still pretty fun. I found that any newb mashing Voldo could best me, mostly because I didn't put as much time into it. At the same time I didn't put as much time into it because...I liked SC2 better. >.>

SC4 was sooooo slooooow by comparison. Or at least it felt that way. I don't know what it was but everything was just weighted down. Vader and Yoda were meh. I could care less about cameos. I could probably give it another shot as I just rented it, but I really don't feel the need too.

Link was severely overpowered in the GC version. Give him the Megaton Hammer and it was game over. I could never beat my brother when he used it but I could kill him every time if he used a different character.

OT, never really played SC4. I have SC3 and love it! I was thinking about maybe picking it up. Now I think I will just stick with SC3.

With posts like this, I'm amazed you made it to over a thousand.

OT:

I could never get into Soul Calibur, I just find the boobs too hideously ridiculous and end up laughing instead of trying to play properly.

Has anyone hit Yoda yet? I think I might have peck him with my force push, but I didn't have time to check since leaping green blur proceeded to cut me to shreds.
tstg: Yoda's cheap.

I think the most disappointing thing about SC4 is the character creation because it seemed that instead of expanding on it, they actually cut it back, and I can't really find exactly what they cut it back for - improved graphics? Jedi? If that's so, then I am even more severely disappointed at the developer's sacrifice of good gameplay for shiny armor and backgrounds and ridiculous cameos (the only Star Wars character that approaches the realm of balanced is Vader and that's a stretch).

As for exactly how it was cut back, it was even cut back in the wrong ways. Instead of getting rid of the alignments and stats on clothes, they cut back on the amount of clothes available. The DLC also felt quite sparse in its offerings on that end. Many of us have big hard drives on our disks - we can handle a large amount of clothes for our characters on them! Then they pulled the character classes with their unique movesets, only allowing us to create clones of the major characters! When I heard of SC4's release, I was planning a whole army of created characters based on movesets similar to those in the character classes. When I found that you could only build clones of the originals, I was furious. I still built my army, but I'm tired of playing multiple different clones of Mitsurugi, Nightmare and Siegfried. Simply put, the entire game of SC4 felt chopped down from 3, but the character creation was the most chopped down of all the features. I really want to see it stepped up next time if they release an SC5.
