Space marine demo; thoughts?

Its Awful!!

I hate, i was so excited for this game, I've been following it since it was leaked.

As a huge warhammer Tabletop fan and Book fan, the game just doesn't feel like warhammer at all.......

Space marine squads are often times small sure but..... theres more then 3-4 people per squad, i hear in the game at points you'll be completely alone...

I hate this whole "you don't need cover you have power armor" So! An ork Axe, a banshee blade those can pierce it, hell bullets can kill them, a good old heated laz rifle or plasma rifle can take you out pretty fast.

Space marines love charging sure, but there very tactical very!! they take cover they do stealth they do well planned manuvers, this game its just CHARGE Oh look i have furry! Mash melee win.

Also Orks die a lot sure, but there not completely weak, there like tissue paper in this game. Fun fact did you know orks can actually match a space marines strength (its why there able to pierce there armor with there axes) This game they just die left and right all over the place theres no challenge. There just cannon fodder and thats not how the orks are. The orks are easily fooled and manipulated sure but ther scary. Theres a saying always going around in Warhammer "if the orks were able all band together under 1 Waaaahg banner nobody could stop them"

The game just feels like it was made for non fans, f you have any love for the lore and the table top lore you'll just feel insulted and disgusted. The game had so much promise.

Have you read the fluff surrounding space marines???? A single squad of Space Marines are known to stop full blown planetary uprisings, they are nigh on indestructible. Yes in the tabletop game they aren't that powerful but that's because they need to be balanced so that other factions can actually stand a chance against them. Good God I'm beginning to sound like Matt Ward!

From what I saw of the demo it captures the feel of a forge world spectacularly. All this being said you are entitled to your opinion. However, I've been massive fan of the tabletop game for ten years and I can safely as a fan 40k fan I AM MOST IMPRESSED!

I think you are mistaking the Orks and Space Marines of the tabletop rules for those of the background fiction.

I've been submerged in the lore since the dawn of 2nd Edition back in the early 1990s (oh god Jim's going off on one of those armchair expert rants ), and in my opinion I think this game fits beautifully. Yes the Orks are powerful foes, stronger and deadlier than your average Human, but they are nothing against a Space Marine. The lore of 40k sets them up as Warrior-Gods of the Imperium and in this game we see them living up to that title admirably as Titus dives into the middle of a dozen Orks and has his bloody way with them.

Haven't really heard much of this hype for it, but when i first heard of it i thought to myself: 'Well this is the most un-imaginative name for a game EVER'.
But... i might get the demo now.

Heh, the Warhammer 40,000 IP is old enough that when they pulled the phrase 'Space Marine' out of older SF novels like Starship Troopers it was probably still considered a new and exciting descriptor, not like the trope [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceMarine] it is today.

If you wanna do the whole rage healing thing then for the love of god it aint that hard. Just give em a new paint job so they are either Blood Angels or Space Wolves (Preferably BA as that does fit them better.) and then you can have your silly new game mechanic AND have it fit in.

But..That..IS BORING. I don't want to wait outside of battle and let myself heal. SO many other games did that and its not fun at all. Tell me how fun it is to watch your teammates kill the orks (Which they suck at) while you have to wait until your health recharge.

In a action game it suppose to be about action. Not "lets wait outside of battle every time my health is down." This isn't halo or gears of war where you wait for your shields or health to recharge and go back to fighting. I'm sorry but I just can't see it in this game. It would ruin it.

You say you are huge Warhammer 40k fan and yet you clearly do not understand the lore, or played on Easy. On Normal Orks take several bolter rounds into body before they go down, sure a head shot will kill them, bolter rounds are size of cola cans and explode, what you expect?
Chainsword - same thing, if you cut someone's flesh there is really very little they can do, and still the Orks do stand for a few hits.

Have you even ran into Nob in the game? Those big armoured guys take several reloads of bolter rifle to even get stunned, in melee combat you have to get your stuns perfect to not be punted around like a beach-ball. Simple Ork Boyz are actually, lore wise, not as strong as a Tactical Marine. That's why they come in numbers. It's after several fights that they grow bigger and gain the Nob status.

Squads are small in WH40K, Typical Tac squad is ~3-5 marines. Cover is dependant on chapter, but most chapters prefer direct approach, they are not sent to sneaky actions. Tac's are there to wreak havoc. Scouts are for stealth engagements and cover is mostly utilized by Imperial Guard as they have paper-thin armour and flash lights as weapons.

Please, revise your lore knowledge... or don't troll.

I see a lot of "fans" of 40k going over the bad points so I take it upon myself as a massive Warhammer fan since I was 10, 20 years ago in 1990 I started with my painting and table top gaming.

So in 20 years i've waited for a game to come along that gave me the feel of Warhammer.

Fire Warrior was arse, Warhammer Online gave me a nostalgia shot when seeing names and places i'd read about but didn't "feel" right, Dawn of War was okay but didn't put me in the action.

So I played this demo but I had a feeling I wasn't going to like it after previous disappointments.

From the start, just walking around it did "feel" right. Movement was chunky which you would expect from a 7 foot, power armour clad super soldier. The Ceramite armour gave off a heavy feel just from moving around and it looked fantastic (big props to the art team).

The bolt pistol acted like I think a bolt pistol would. It has a heavy feel of fire to it but nowhere near as powerful as the actual bolter. I heard an argument that people thought the pistol should have been more powerful. Bear in mind folks that Imperial Commissar's often use bolt pistols so to make them too powerful really would have taken a lot out of canon.

The bolter.... oooh the bolter. We've all played shooters and thought "I wish this gun had more power" well I didn't think that once. I've read a LOT of Black Library Warhammer books and had a mental picture of how a boltgun should be. THIS, this right here is how a boltgun should be. It felt powerful, it ripped through shit and blew it up.

Not much to say about the sniper and mine gun, they did their job but I didn't use them a whole lot in the actual fighting.

The chainsword. What can you say about a 2 foot long whirling chaintoothed weapon of death. It does exactly what it says on the tin and it felt good doing it. Same goes for the Power Axe. You expect a power weapon to rip apart anything it touches thats why people love them and thats exactly what it does.

The jump pack. Never before in a 3rd person shooter have I had so much fun. It felt like an assualt pack and not a rocket flying pack, it was well designed. Plus it was amazing fun launcing into a group of Orks and slamming into the middle of them, kill of a few and jump back out before they regroup.

The scenery looked amazing. It was exactly how the Forge Worlds are described in books.

So to me it was everything i'd been waiting for in a Warhammer game. It just feels right.

Agreed! If I want to cower in fear while I heal up I will go back and play other shooters. For Space Marine I want to be a Space Marine, a (nearly) unstoppable engine of destruction who either kills everything or dies in the attempt.

There's a great quote from the fiction that sums up the bright armour, lack of hiding really.

That guy has a rule in the tabletop game called "Proud to live. Proud to die. Hard to kill" pretty much sums up most Marine officers.

Thank you. For a game like Gears of War it works. It suppose to be a bad thing and you have to hide in. I mean your just a normal human being, facing off monstrous creatures that could tear you apart if they are close. Its a cover pace action game so your not suppose to be upfront.

But in Space Marine, they WANT you to feel like a badass. Like someone who had the powers of the Emperor behind you and leading you to victory!. BUT SCREW the emperor..I follow the Machine god! lol. At least, I would if I was part of the Imperial. <.<

Its a 40k game. Its supposed to be about 40k. A Ultramarine going into rage mode and getting more health from killing is a fucking retarded idea. No two ways about it. Plain ol pigshit retarded. Especially because as I said, make him a Blood Angel and it would make sense.
They do go into insane rages in battle and do drink the blood of their enemies.
Why should long time fans of the series have the universe they have supported for so long be ruined by a bunch of ADD kids who can't go 5 seconds without killing something?
Space Marines (especially Ultrasmurfs) are meant to be master tacticians. The game mechanics turn it into "Run up, hit shit with sword."

Have you play it at all? Just "Running in and hit shit with sword" is a terrible idea. Unless of course you just play on easy. The way I play it is I ACT like a SPACE MARINE. I use my surroundings as I lay mines, pick off long range gunners with my stalker bolter. I use grenades and then finish off the rest with a bolter. If its in close corridors then I got into melee.

The healing is just a bonus so just in case you do get overwhelm then you have a chance to heal up and not have to worry about getting chase down all the time and not fighting. Cause you know, a space marine would run away from a fight. In most books I read, Space Marines would rather die then running away.

i didnt play the DOW2 campaign on principle, i dont play as the space marine on last stand on dow2 or as them in skirmish, i hate space marines they are bland and uninteresting.
Now i have not played the demo, nor will i, nor will i buy the game.
I would much rather a game be made where i get to play as gaunts ghosts, they are the most popular book series and could easily make a few games from the many books, and i would love to be the player character of actual heroes like Gaunt, Mkoll, Ezrah, Rawne, Larkin, etc...

much more than i would be a space marine, and if i fathom from reading here, the space marine in game is alot weaker than space marines in lore, but alot stronger than marines in other games due to balance issues.

i didnt play the DOW2 campaign on principle, i dont play as the space marine on last stand on dow2 or as them in skirmish, i hate space marines they are bland and uninteresting.

Sure, sure. I wasn't being serious as it should be all you want from a game. But personally, the hammer to face concept appeals a lot to me, as it's just plain fun.

It rolled a 6, and the rending hit ripped my expectations in two.

I was expecting it to feel.... dull. But everything has weight to it. Your movements area heavy, and your feet hammer the ground like a falling Deff Dread. The weapons are the part that really got me though. They sound like they should. ((Maybe the bolter is a little quieter then i would have liked though))

The Armor/Health System is perfict. I honestly dont think they could have made it better. Running and hiding can be helpful at times, but the fact that rushing in and ripping things in half is productive to your end goal of living is what makes the system even better.

I find myself a little torn on the combat. While the ranged weapons are by no means weak, melee is much more rewarding. Im sure its just because the demo focuses around your enemy's being almost completely melee based though.

I give it 9 Planet Busting Exterminatus out of 10.

I thought it was really disappointing overall, the combat is very repetitive with the ranged weapons running out of ammo really quickly and the chainsaw being really really basic with three light attacks before a "destroy all in area attacks." The voice acting doesn't really set the scene as well as the Voice acting in DoW, which, in my opinion, had some of the best voice acting ever. Although, one thing it does have in its favour, is the jet packs. I thought they would work terribly, being just like Halo:Reach's jetpack system but they've actually thought about it's proper aplications in the 40K universe.

Of course I can't harp on the campaign story yet but I predict that it will be something fairly run of the mill.

In reality, the only selling point it has is that it is in the 40k universe and, voice acting aside, it does it fairly well, The only thing I think about when I look at the 40k universe is, "How many planets do humans operate on?" Seriously? Does no one else think this?

A brown, noisy, brain-dead mess that clearly takes itself waaay too seriously. But maybe that's intentional.

It's basically functional and the action is alright I suppose, but that's all I can say for it. Although the melee system boils down to little more than button-mashing.

It's certainly not a game that I would ever pay full price for. More the kind of thing that I pick up for $20 during a Steam sale when I want to fill a lazy afternoon or two

Also, is it just me or are the orks more interesting than the marines in every single way? Visually, thematically... you name it. Screw the generic overgrown macho meatheads in power armour, I want to play as one of the green guys instead.

I do agree with you about Gaunt's Ghost and I would love to play a game as a guardsman. Although it would be a tough game to make...since you are basically the cannon fodder of the Imperium.

I used to find Spess Mahrines boring also, brainwashed religious fanatics that I couldn't stand. But I played the demo, and I liked it.

Why won't you even try the demo? If you don't like it, then uninstall it. It makes you feel like on of them, a big hulking brainwashed killing machine.

My only lvl 20 characters in Last stand for retribution is the delightfully British, Lord General, and the bland but overpowered(with lightning claws) Space Marine. And I HATE the Space Marine, I turn my audio off when I use him; but I play it out of the principle that it is a good character to play with sometimes, and can be fun. (and he can tank as good as the mekboy..and healing strikes...and attacks that stack over time and spread to others around you)

It does look like a game I want to play, though.

I cant play the demo coz my pc wont handle it and i dont have XBL atm im using internet through a dongle lol, i reread the post and i sound quite up myself, il probably lend it off a mate to try it out at some point but my hopes arent high lol.
Funnily my lvl20 on last stand is the chaos sorc for multiple fireballs of death and a regenerating doppleganger that does exploding damage when hit and regains health and energy when he hits back
and my lvl 19 mek boy to jump around the screen, laying down mines and dakka with his big shoota

I could never ever get into the sorcerer, i find him more interesting than the Marine; but he also seems to have lodged his head firmly up his ass, and I can't stand it. Also he seems to die very quickly.

Been there, done that, had the screen crash =] once we got passed it coz we were all narcisstic and you die less with the deathless robes you get at lvl18 =]
