I used to hate playing 007 Golden eye, or Halo with my brother and his friends cause on split screen you can see where everyone is. He would cheat and kill me almost every time... especially if we were playing one on one! But honestly, I like the split screen. It's a older way to play two player(or more!) games. Brings me back!

Split-screen gaming annoys the hell out of me. I can't stand it. I can't see shit, it just splits off, I get confused and I die. Fuck you, split-screening.

I like it but I think that it should be revamped a bit for today's gaming audience. Specifically, split screen co-op campaigns.

Resistance 2 is okay for split screen. Most of the problems just stem from not having a large enough screen to play things on, in my opinion.
Playing Halo 3 in Split Screen for some reason makes your screen Smaller.

Resi 5 is great fun in split, although it is horribly badly implememted. Having to use Sheva and run around on the right hand side of the screen is very disorientating...

Army of Two, as horrible as it might be, is very cool in 2 people in a split-screen.

Split screen, or some sort of Local multiplayer, is essential. Why? Because it's fun, and it adds replay value. Sure, the screen gets smaller, but it's offset by the advantages having a live friend you trust playing next to you (GoW Insane, Halo Legendary anyone?).

What are you talking about? Split-screen never died. Halo 3, Gears of war 1+2,Kane and Lynch dead men, Army of Two,most racing games all allow split-screen online and in system link.

Another thing is shared screen games, like Golden Axe and Castle Crashers. But in general, the gaming industry seems to go more and more on online options.

It is too bad that 4 player splitscreen isn't a standard anymore... a lot of games are only 2 player and it becomes rather annoying when i have 2 or 3 friends coming over... i have to invest in another console,tv/monitor, and game just to play together! L4D is only 2 player splitscreen Gears 2 is only 2 player... fortunately though CoD4 is 4 player and Halo 3 is 4 player

I played coop in Halo 1, so that must have been my first split screen play, i still like it especially in Halo 3 and CoD4.

I just think its funny that they've made systems capable of having 4 controllers hooked into them simultaneously and yet refuse to take advantage of that capability. We're now at a point where a large percentage of people have tvs large enough for splitscreen to be reasonable and they killed it anyway. Castle Crashers was one of my favorite games of the last 2 years because of its multiplayer capabilities. A great single player experience is all well and good but I want the ability to hunker down in a big couch with a couple buddies and a bag of doritos and mash on a game together.
Ironic isn't it?
Yes I miss such as well, although it wasn't doritos, it was smartfood. What about system link? Is that capability still used? or has it gone by the wayside as well?

Ah smartfood. MSG in a bag... awesome. System link is of course a possibility. If you have 2 tvs 2 consoles, 2 copies of the game etc. I do not have 2 tvs, I have 1 tv, I do not have friends who can easily transport a tv into my house. Thus, it is difficult for me to do such things.

I think they've killed off the splitscreen action in order to force us to buy our own copies of a given game. Maybe it's just the conspiracy nut in me talking, but that's my thought on the subject. I really love playing multiplayer games with my friends in the same room, on the same TV. Guitar Hero, Timesplitters, Mariokart, Perfect Dark (back in the day), and all those games are way more fun when you can trash talk the guy sitting next to you. My buddy Taylor says some of the most amusing things when we play Mariokart64 together (some of which involves suggesting Mario choke on a donkey's genitals. Good times).

Pfft split screen we used undo and transport our friends PS1 to my other friends house run cables down the stairs and on two tv's with linked playstations play C&C.

but best splitscreen game was goldeneye. fast paced 4 windows..even if you were caught cheating sometimes all it took was a second or two to look away and you took a golden bullet straight to the face.

Splitscreen is a must for any console games that has multiplayer IMO, except those where you play on the same screen anyways, like fighting games.

If a console FPS with online multiplayer doesn't have split screen option, it's just lazy game production, and they should be punished.

I've been playing splitscreen since Goldeneye and I too look out for games based on their multiplayer capabilities. I thoroughly enjoy 2 player co-op campaigns and decent skirmishes, so here are some of my recommendations. For Co-Op campaign: Gears of War 2, Call of Duty World at War, Halo 3, Left 4 Dead, Timesplitters: Future Perfect and Rainbow 4 Vegas were all hugely entertaining and for some multplayer skirmish action: CoD 4, as well as all the co-op campaign ones, listed above. I really wish Valve had put a but more work into TF2 for splitscreen or at least give me some bots, so I can play offline.

Nothing beats a good split screen CONSOLE multiplayer session. Online playing is for PC. Call me old fashion, but console should be more personal, more intimate. I could never come to term with online console games.

PC split-screen gaming just doesn't work well. Well, at least there's some games worth playing, like Tyrian... I've considered of trying to split-screen the PC version of L4D, since I could borrow it from an friend.
