I still say the first one on NES was the best. everything leading up to 7 was good, 7 was decent (for its time, AMAZING, but yeah), and since then it's been crap, crap and more crap. maybe it's eventually time to call it quits, fellas.
I wouldn't mind getting a FF5DS remake :D

FINAL FANTASY XIII WAS BAD?! D8 How could this be? Was it the lack of any conceivably intelligent story or plot, the horrifically one-dimensional, irritating characters, or perhaps the awful battle system where the player can succeed by pressing the X button over and over again, letting the game play itself. Oh, oh, perhaps it was the fact that nobody could understand what the fuck was going on since the game didn't explain anything that was being portrayed. Fuck the game. I liked it for 10 hours, but I was only there for the art style, and that alone does not a good game make. Fans didn't like it? Did anybody like it?! Summarised in one word, this game is: corridors.

Gaming 101 Square; I think you need to re-learn a few things. Maybe you should ask ATLUS for some advice on how they make their Persona games. I mean, fuck, I just remembered how tedious and dull the entire experience was. Over the 60 hours of playing I was waiting for the game to suddenly metamorphose into Final Fantasy IX, but it never did. I spent 30 hours being taught on how to play a game which I was not allowed to play, and being forced to use characters I hated and level up against my own will along an entirely linear path.
Final Fantasy VIII was better than this fucking game. Hell, Disgaea was better than this game.

Hmm... Where is Final Fantasy suppose to go... Less fucking sci-fi/Anime bullcrap and more actual fantasy, please. And proper storytelling, too. No more footnote menus.

During my time with Final Fantasy XIII, I liked the combat, even though it felt demeaning to constantly push one button more times than your generic action-brawler/slasher. But it's the ridiculous plot, unlikable characters and piss-poor storytelling that killed the game for me.
wait you could follow the plot? I finished the game and still have questions about it :(.

I feel they went astray in terms of illusion of choice. On the SNES rpg's, arguably the best in the series, you had a world map you could wander, and a job system you could mix and match. Final Fantasy Tactics took that shit to the extreme, with a SENSIBLE AND REALISTIC PLOT full of intruige (until it took a bullet to the head in the second act and god superpowered demon zodiac...things)

Legend of the Dragoon is a Sony made game not square (if it's the game I think you are referring to, I could be wrong).

Maybe consider giving it a break Square 23 years of one series is enough, I not only had to use the datalogs to understand the plot but even what the characters were supposed to be feeling directly after the cinematics ended especially when they invovled Hope in anyway

I might forgive you if you make FFXIII-2 where the entire game is a 5 hour quick time event of Lightning punching Snow villers repeatedly in the face.

I would buy a game like that, but could we beat up hope to? And I know what you mean about the data logs, you shouldn't have to read extra stuff to answer question the story was supposed to tell. That's like me buying a book and finishing it then buying a foot note book to explain what I just read.

They don't know where to take it? It can't be that difficult, they just have to go somewhere different. You know, different from the other times between 7 and 13.

Ain't that the truth, although I think FF13 is weak I thought it was fun. Although I'm going to have to go back to FF5 and FF6 and enjoy my favorite of the series.

Hope was fine I didn't think his writing or place in the story to be all that interesting but Snow was the most annoying character I have ever encountered in Gaming even with the existance of Navi, I hated him after about 3 cutscenes, even Hope tried to kill him so I can't find fault with him because of that.

I KNOW WHAT THEY CAN DO... NOTHING!. now i loved Final Fantasy but they've dragged it on for so long that i think it's time to give it up. it's had an amazing run and will be missed but i think they've broken the gaming Code. NO game should go past 5 sequels, it will eventually go stale.

Wow..Really? By that logic, I guess that must also mean that if someone didnt enjoy the prequel trilogy, that they must not be real star wars fans, right?

I mean ive owned and beaten every numbered FF game thus far released (during their release period no less, IE: own/beat FF1 before FF2 was released), Spin offs such as mystic quest, FFX-2, Gameboy, DS, and Psp rehashes of old titles,Replayed most multiple times, replayed several on EMUs, owned at least 3 different posters for individual games in the series, Bought expansions for FFXI, Played the fan mod of FFX for NES, Bought strategy guides for FF8, and two different ones for FF7, Watched Spirits within at full price theatrical release, Have had the intro theme as my ringtone on my cell phone since...2004, On Amanosan & Neil Gaimans Sandman graphic novel, Still own the promotional gas station fountain drink cup for FF7, and even own a plush Mog. I had no Idea I wasnt a fan, but I guess makes it less embarrassing to admit all of that, because, well, it could be worse, at least im not a fan.

I guess im not a fan because I dont cosplay the chars, subscribe to fanclub newsletters or write my own fanfiction, because, well, ive got better things to do with my life, even though my presence in this thread isnt really evidence to that.

But more important than all that silliness, I do full heartedly concur, I would pay also full price for a sequel to FFXIII, provided its nothing but rag doll physics having Snow and Hope mangled in inhumane ways.

They should go where Lost Odyssey went. Basically, have grownups as characters, no overline emo kids, a real nice turn based battle system (for faster battles there are already plenty of names, Tales series, Star Ocean series, western RPG-s and so on) and a great exploring system without losing the linearity. Lost Odyssey was as linear as it can be, but the ample treasure hidden in all kinds of places and small nooks an crannys to explore made it really enjoyable and also gave an impression of exploring.

Um... so yeah remake FF7.

I prefer my JRPGs to western ones, turnbased, chess like combat is great.

Sure the KOTORs and masseffects are good but imo only for the story. The combat is dire and the fact Square-enix are trying to replicate this is why alot of fans are getting pissed off.

They need to go back to their roots and if they do listen to public opinion as this article suggests then it is time for some remakes.

I made an account with for this thread. I loved to watch the building of the protagonist characters. They weren't perfect and they felt real (annoying but real). I would have enjoyed it, it I knew what the fuck was going on earlier instead of reading the database for every new term tossed out with no real explanation of that was going on. I own, and have played every FF game released in American, and I like each of them for there own reasons. If Square-Enix wants an idea on how to move on I have a few.

1) Bring back my Turn based, full party control system. No offense to the AI...but If I lose a fight cause I screw up fine. If I lose a fight cause of the AI...not so good.
2) More story, as I progress the story should unwind without the need of foot notes.
3) AP system for skills. FF IX was awesome for that.
4) No more licensing system (FF XII). I felt like an idiot battling wolves till I could equip better armor and gear. Seriously...who needs a license to wear a hat?
5) Bring back the world map. I want to be able to get lost and find some high level mob nest while I'm Lv.10
6) Random Encounters! FF XII and XIII annoyed me, with the number of Mob Encounters on screen. I liked it when running around lost meant you still got encounters and experience, and you didn't have to seek them out.

Yea, I saw other good ideas in this thread as well. Overall, I was pleased with FF XIII it did what it was spose to do. Entertain, characters were rather enjoyable and I thought it was pretty cool to watch them grow, unlike in other FF (Cloud, I'm looking at you).

Things to improve for the next FF:
- Reintroduce towns and exploration. Granted all FF games are linear, but good ones give the appearance of exploration and choice. I felt entirely too caged with 13's "move, fight, move, fight, cutscene, move, fight" motif.
- Correct problems with monster, craft, costume, weapon design. They've gone way overboard with things that look way cool for no good reason. I don't think I've seen that better shown than in the Unskippable episode here. Look! Its an airplane...with saw blades for hands?
- Back to the basics with the story telling. Square knew they had a problem here - it why there are so many details in the encyclopedia elements and the fact that the characters spent so much time talking about what was going on rather than what they were doing about it.
- Actually likable characters with understandable motives. Fang and Sazh were the only characters that I found interesting, the others I'd rate on relative level of annoyance.
- Streamline character growth elements. The "level" system in 13 was boring. Like many scenes in the game, it gave the impression of flexibility when it was overall just a straight line. They should either take it basics (Lvl 29 Spikey Haired warrior gets +2 Magic and a cool new sword throwing capability) or provide actual customization.

But it all comes down to one thing - the story.

The story of FFXIII was a complete mess. No interesting villain, no general goal, no real plot twists, no character development, no central theme. It didn't even seem like the characters were challenged most of the time as they were significantly more powerful than 99% of those they faced. All this takes a great battle system, makes it boring and makes the game feel like work.

You do realize that some of us have been fans of the series longer than you have been alive, right?

FFXIII is the only core FF game that I haven't beaten and I got it on release day. Every weekend I say "ok, I'm going to beat the game today", and every weekend I find other things more interesting to do, where those more interesting things may be exciting stuff like "take wife shopping", "mow lawn", and "change oil in the bimmer". That I would rather change the oil in my car than finish a game that I'm 85% of the way through is a huge step back for the series.

I'm glad Square is recognizing the faults in this game so that they can make improvements in the next.

Focus on your MMO, guys...o-o

And as for the above guy..yes..More powerful than 99% of what they faced...until you get to Chapter 11 and the game gives you a kick in the teeth with the tower boss. That guy is a *****. o-o
