Things to improve for the next FF:
- Reintroduce towns and exploration. Granted all FF games are linear, but good ones give the appearance of exploration and choice. I felt entirely too caged with 13's "move, fight, move, fight, cutscene, move, fight" motif.
- Correct problems with monster, craft, costume, weapon design. They've gone way overboard with things that look way cool for no good reason. I don't think I've seen that better shown than in the Unskippable episode here. Look! Its an airplane...with saw blades for hands?
- Back to the basics with the story telling. Square knew they had a problem here - it why there are so many details in the encyclopedia elements and the fact that the characters spent so much time talking about what was going on rather than what they were doing about it.
- Actually likable characters with understandable motives. Fang and Sazh were the only characters that I found interesting, the others I'd rate on relative level of annoyance.
- Streamline character growth elements. The "level" system in 13 was boring. Like many scenes in the game, it gave the impression of flexibility when it was overall just a straight line. They should either take it basics (Lvl 29 Spikey Haired warrior gets +2 Magic and a cool new sword throwing capability) or provide actual customization.
But it all comes down to one thing - the story.
The story of FFXIII was a complete mess. No interesting villain, no general goal, no real plot twists, no character development, no central theme. It didn't even seem like the characters were challenged most of the time as they were significantly more powerful than 99% of those they faced. All this takes a great battle system, makes it boring and makes the game feel like work.

I wouldn't worry about the criticism, the people complaining about Final Fantasy XIII weren't true fans of the series anyway.
You do realize that some of us have been fans of the series longer than you have been alive, right?
FFXIII is the only core FF game that I haven't beaten and I got it on release day. Every weekend I say "ok, I'm going to beat the game today", and every weekend I find other things more interesting to do, where those more interesting things may be exciting stuff like "take wife shopping", "mow lawn", and "change oil in the bimmer". That I would rather change the oil in my car than finish a game that I'm 85% of the way through is a huge step back for the series.
I'm glad Square is recognizing the faults in this game so that they can make improvements in the next.
