The perfect final fantasy:

Battle system from FF13
Liscence system (for weapons) from FF12
AP system for skills from FF9
GF raising system of FF8

I'd honestly enjoy a starting party choice much like you got in the original FF. That pretty much settled things, and you can throw in as many guests as you want. The only issue would be writing adaptive storylines with the different combinations of characters, but that could just be changed by labeling them as character 1/2/3/4 in the story progression, choose gender on that basis, and add little quips depending on what class they are, and side cut-scenes.
With that formula in mind, i think they could work it out by not having to change a story they've made, but the character manages to make a proper party, as opposed to what FF has devolved where by the time you've completed the game 100% every character has the same moves, and the same strategy in fight; target, attack, rinse, repeat.
I'd like them to make fighting interesting, and stop pandering to players to allow them to do EVERYTHING the first time they go through the game.

To it's grave perhaps. Not to hate, but I wonder how much longer this series can keep going (if it plans on being good).

Take it behind the barn and give it the Old Yeller treatment. Try seeing how good your game does without Final Fantasy on the title.

I loved that GF raising thing with A PASSION. It was what made VIII a great game for me, other than a good one. Gave it the originality of the series, while not relying too heavily on the story. That and the Junction System of course.

Until you think of an idea, remake Final Fantasy VII and everyone will eat that up like candy.
I second that, but just with one modification like in FFX where the ultimate weapons had no damage cap or something. By the time I was at the end of the game, my normal attacks did 9999 damage (plus Cloud with 4x attack, Red XIII with slash all, and Vincent with deathblow + added slash or whatever they were called), so there was no point in using magic or summons... And then I could actually fight Emerald/Ruby without having to use cheap tactics (KotR chain)...

Here's somthings you might want to do.
1. Give us our goddamned turn based combat back! Preferbly FFX's.
2. Remake FFVII. Not favorite but many people love it.
3. Make a FFX prequal. With FFX's combat system.
4. Not a FF technicly but make KH3! It'll certinly get fan confidence back.
5. Less retarded story, please.
If you do any of those things you will get fan confidence back.
If you do all of those things you will gain unmatchable richness.

The trouble is, fans have become increasingly stupid.

Final Fantasy X is just as linear as Final Fantasy XIII, but because there's an airship type teleport it isn't quite so blatant. XII even, is linear and yet that went by relatively unnoticed.

Square Enix aren't sure where to go because they don't know how to cater for morons.

Especially when one looks at what our market is saturated with: FPS, 3PS, sport and little else. I'm beginning to agree with research that states gaming turns individuals into instant gratification, attentional deficited sloths.

And the focus on the franchise name, christ. Every game is an evolution and just as good an IP as the original. It means little more than the next Nike trainer released - a means of identifying the RPG/trainer.

This game would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't a 38-hour movie/tutorial. In my opinion, the future FF games would need to be more action-oriented, because waiting for a bar to fill to do an attack sucks. I kinda liked FFXII's movement in battle thing. Now, get rid of the waiting bar (unless an attack skill/spell was used, then those would have individual cooldown times) and implement auto-attacking...

This is sounding a lot like an MMORPG, or a Japanized Dragon Age. Still, adapting is an awesome thing.

Edit: Crap, just got ninja'd by the guy above me. I think.

I hate to say it but I agree with you. I stopped halfway through 10 and haven't gone back since. They just aren't the games of my childhood anymore...

I still say the first one on NES was the best. everything leading up to 7 was good, 7 was decent (for its time, AMAZING, but yeah), and since then it's been crap, crap and more crap. maybe it's eventually time to call it quits, fellas.

Square had the perfect formula for making great RPGs that everyone enjoyed (FFX), so why didn't they just add to that greatness (like a more explorable world map, as seen in the likes of final fantasy 9) and then throw in some beautiful graphics and a nice story?

I wish people would stop looking at Final Fantasy as a series as such.

Final fantasy games were about building a game that pushed the limits of the host machine and gave what the company thought was it's best possible game. Hell the first nearly bankrupted the company, hence the name.

Final fantasy 13 ticks all those boxes, they produced a beautiful looking game that delivers a well told (if bloody slow) story in the way SE felt was best with an interesting combat system.

And many people didn't like it, experiments do fail sometimes just don't make FF13 again.

Now SquareEnix start working on some new ideas and get on with on making the best damn RPG you can imagine.

FFX had no waiting bar, just sayin'.
Plus the whole MMO combat thing is WAY overused. FFX's was my favorite it allowed you to think and plan while not having to wait if you've already decided. Plus that games characters and story pull me in immensly. I don't care if it's linear just please, make a as emotionly driving and well rounded characters as FFX.

Here's a thought. Why does it have to go anywhere at all? Why not come out with a new IP that steps up the plate with what people would like to see from JRPGs?

I mean, I wouldn't agree with Yahtzee on the subject of 'there shouldn't be any sequels because they almost always suck' because I genuinely like a great many sequels of all sorts. But when you've gone down the road '14 extremely final times'...isn't it about time to move on already?!
