Do what Yahtzee said, throw out the turn based combat and make a movie, considering the fact that turn based combat is like chess, except there is only one column, sure you can make it look exciting, but its still the same strategy, just pick your most powerful move. I used to play Turn based RPG's but then I figured out it was just retarded as it isn't anymore exciting then clicking a mouse button when the computer isn't even on. That's why everytime I heard "RPG" my interest severely goes down.

No matter what they come up with, someone is going to complain bitterly that its unoriginal. As if anything is original these days?
Yah. Borderlands, BFBC1, just two titles.

Hmm... Where is Final Fantasy suppose to go... Less fucking sci-fi/Anime bullcrap and more actual fantasy, please. And proper storytelling, too. No more footnote menus.
Uhhhh, yah FANTASY, how is sci-fi and anime not a fantasy?

Wait, aren't they already half way done with 14, which they started years ago? Haven't they already released trailers and stuff? So, even with another game on the horizon, they don't know what to do with the series? I'm a little confused.

Personally, I'd just retire the series, at least for a long time, then just reboot it.

I'm thinking they should put it in a biodegradeable grave and bury the damn thing where nobody will ever find it.

I hate Final Fantaty.

Terranigma 2 would be awesome. They could even throw in an emulated copy of Terranigma for all the folks who never got to play the original. The problem I see is "How will the story work?" Would you have to perpetuate the cycle that ended the world the last time?

I'd like to see Final Fantasy VI: War of the Magi. You'd have to fight the psychotic Espers who ruined the world and the Goddesses that created them. Harness the power of defeated Espers to use it against your enemies. You could even recruit a penitent Esper to help your party.

I'd also like to see another Chrono or Lufia game. They've got the resources, but they keep saying "There aren't enough potential sales for a new Chrono game."

Why the hell are people STILL treating it as a series, non of the games have anything to do with each other, every Squaresoft/Enix game could be called Final Fantasy and they'd all have exactly the same in common.

The problem with the franchise is the idiots who don't know what they want or moan because it isnt exactly the same as a certain game they played and loved well SHUT UP!

It's annoying as hell! I can't believe people judge this game on its name, on both sides, people buy it and hate it because of its name, in their own rights every single game is brilliant, they're different, that's why you don't like them!

Some people (myself included) actually like differences in games and genres evolving, if you wanna play FFVII or whatever you call your favourite RPG etc etc then go play it, if you want an evolving history then dont complain because you're too stupid to understand change!

Go back to basics

* Their fantasy-future settings are as old and cliche as fantasy settings were when they abandoned those. Either go back to old school fantasy (I am purposely avoiding thinking about FFXII), or try an entirely new direction, like dimensional or temporal hoping plot lines.

* Allow the player to assemble the group themselves. Look at the jobs systems from other FF games they made everything deeper. How about you introduce the character with a short descriptive paragraph, and allow the player to pick a base class that character can start with "Bob, protagonist with a silly hair cut, but a troubled past: pick class - Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage, Thief". From there the player can specialize into more esoteric classes like Dark Knight, Dragoon, Summoner, Blue Mage, Red Mage, Monk, and Ninja through the game either by leveling up or giving them to us as rewards for being OCD about completion. Either way the actual characters and their personalities will remain the same, how they behave in battle and what equipment they use will be the big differences.

* Stop messing with the battle system. Turn based may be slow, but real time didn't feel right to me either. So what did square do? They put the fighting on auto-pilot, which was frankly criminal in the first part of FFXIII when it left the player with nothing to do. If we're going back to basics stick with turn-based combat.

* Character Groups. Back in the mists of time I played a game called Final Fantasy II on my super nintendo. Your group consisted on five whole people. Then some years later I played Final Fantasy III on the same system and the groups were four people big. Still not bad! Then Final Fantasy VII came out on PSOne... only three characters. Since then we've generally been stuck with three characters at a time. Find a way to bring us one more character, please. If not let us swap in and out like FFX.

It's been suggested elsewhere they make a remake of the original Final Fantasy. It's not a horrible idea, but I would rather see them take the game's framework and expanded it with the epicness and over the top elements they've gotten so good at over the years.

Just kill it, end it. You know somethings gone on for too long when it reaches the 13th edition, most things go stale after 3 or 4.

Amazon Japan customer reviews actually gave more terrible ratings to FFXII than Amazon US did

I have an idea.

Final Fantasy VS Capcom

I think it could work...

OT:Im not sure myself, i think maybe taking it back to its roots for a bit instead of releasing remakes might spark some interest.
Hopefully they can come up with something soon.
No no no, we need a Nintendo Versus Capcom first :D

Maybe even Nintendo Versus Capcom Versus Square Enix...

I don't know that they should necessarily kill the series. There are a lot of people that enjoy it, and just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should be killed off. Believe it or not, the world doesn't revolve around you.

As for where to take it, I would say that you have to look from the ground up and try to see where the problems are. As much as I liked FFXIII, the storytelling was just awful. If they try to work on working the story into the game itself, rather than having to read about it in the menu, that would help. More relatable characters would be nice as well. When you get down to it, Snow is not relatable at all. If he is, it's to a small audience for sure. I mean, you can keep the super-powered juggernauts of characters, as they can be relatable through personality as well. They don't have to all be living middle-of-the-road lives, they just can't be fucking obnoxious.

Look at Kain from FFIV, for example. He was jealous of Cecil for getting Rosa. Certainly we've all felt jealousy before, especially over that kind of thing. That makes him relatable, even though he's a dragoon that's evil for half of the game.

take it to the furnace. you've got a great replacement already:
yeah sorry no...that game is one of the reasons final fantasy 13 had no world map, next to no real towns.
It has all the same failings..and more...Since it uses Disney characters.

As for the topic at hand...they should take it back to what it was...you know..Fantasy...they need to stop with this steam punk scifi crap I'm sick of final fantasy characters evolving to look more and more Japanese, and containing more and more giant robot referencing.

I didn't like steam punk with akira, didn't like it with ghost in the shell. I decidedly dislike the Japanese version of steampunk. So why take a game called Final Fantasy and turn it scifi like they have?
Go back to what it was epic fantasy story telling with actual real magic...all so stop with the 80 hours of CGI I want to play my game not watch it. and ff13 was majority movie with little gameplay compared.
