Did anyone else notice that there are apparently four discs dedicated to FF VII in this release? The American version only had three discs, and since the International version is just the American version translated back into Japanese (or, more accurately, with the Japanese script reinstated), I sincerely doubt that it was four discs long, either. So there it is: what's on the extra disc?

Anyway, this is an awesome boxed set. Why does the coolest Final Fantasy stuff never make it out of Japan?
IIRC, the International version fourth disc had bonus supplemental information, some map images and character sketches. It seems like they just ported this over without thinking about disc space concerns - you could easily put the entirety of VII and its bonus discs on one Blu-Ray. What a waste of space.
Blu-Ray? Heck, you could squeeze it onto a single layer DVD. It wouldn't work right without a port job, though; it's a PS1 game, and Sony's backwards compatibility scheme has always been just to cram the old system into the case for the new one, meaning you need something formatted properly for the original hardware for it to work on the new one.

Thanks for the explanation on the fourth disc, by the way. I never knew about that.

I guess it's nice to have an anniversary celebration and all, but it might only serve to highlight just how downhill the series has gotten :[ sighh meh

They could be bothered to collect them all, but they couldn't be bothered to make them all playable on the same device? Pass. If there was a "All of them for the PC" or heck even just a "All of them for the PS3" bundle, I might be interested, but on four separate consoles, none of which I own and one of which (The PS1) is not exactly common anymore? Nope.
I fully agree with you. I don't have a PS1, PS2 or PSP; thus the only game I could play in the whole bundle without going and buying used hardware is FF XIII which, not only did I not like, I already own.

I seriously would have shelled out the cash for this if it was all playable on the same machine, but not like this, Square. Not like this.

It's amazing to think that years back it seemed like we wouldn't get the classic FFs released overseas; and now we have the entire series avaiable in so many formats.

Meh, I was interested until it said the games will be released on older formats. Just fucking put 1-12 on one blu-ray for PS3 for fuck's sake and you've got a buyer in me.

Why not go one step further and include all the DS spinoffs? Or hell, the sequels? I'm sure someone out there is willing to shell out that much cash for Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and the complete clusterfuck that is the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (complete with a Japanese-text, mobile-only version of Before Crisis!)

To me, this is essentially porn in a box.

The only games I still have (in working order) are VII, VIII, XII and XIII. Hell, I even still have my PS1 and PS2 sat alongside the PS3 raring to go. Tempting.....really tempting. I need something to spend my newfound wealth on, this could be one item of interest.

I know we aren't supposed to advocate criminal activity, but I may be forced to resort to murder, prostitution, or narcotic distribution so that I can get my hands on this.
Or some combination of the three

...in fact, forget the blackjack!

but yeah this is damn cool, despite my not caring about approximately half of all Final Fantasy titles

Too bad for them I still own all the Final Fantasy games worth owning. Also, the exclusion of Final Fantasy Tactics(The best Final Fantasy) is an insult.

This appeals to the collector in me, who has only played FF13 and would love to explore the previous games!

However, it does not appeal to the part of me that has never so much as touched a Playstation and probably never will :(

I see a few problems and I am sure they are problems that other fans will have.

1. I already own FF VI to XIII (VI,VII,VIII and IX off the PSN as well as on PS1 Disc)
2. I will die before I give SE any money for FF XII or XIII. I already hate that I gave them any money for these the first time.
3. If I did buy this I would be unable to play it as it would mean either starving to death due to having no money for food or have no power due to me not having enough cash to pay my energy bill.
Too bad for you guys . This is the best case of " SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" for me.

OT: *Cue FF victory music*

I'd like to reference the Megaman Collection [http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Anniversary-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B00019HNNC] and Megaman X Collection [http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-X-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B0009XBWY6] here. Despite both of these having games that were on a variety of platforms (NES/SNES/PSX), they managed to consolidate it all onto a single format (PS2). And they cost me $20 a piece.

So why was this so bloody impossible for Square to do for something that costs more than twenty times as much? I'm fairly sure (if nothing else) that they could have the PS3 just straight up emulate anything on the PS1 or PSP. And would it be that hard to just recompile the PS2 ones? This is sheer madness.
I second this. I was going to post the exact same message. Thank you for saving me time and effort and...

The flaw in the formula is anyone that cares about the anniversary probably already has most or all of those games.
...thank you, too. As an avid fan of Final Fantasy (up until 10, that's where it ended for me) I can attest that I have most of the games that I consider to be the best of the Final Fantasy series already.

Nice artwork, but I have FFVII onwards on their original platform and everything else on emulator anyway. I'm afraid I'll be passing on Final Fantasy's birthday, I have disowned her. All I have now are memories of what FF used to be. Giving out a fancy overpriced photo album now really isn't enough.

Seriously this. My PS1 + PS2 died ages ago, and having the option to play those old games on my PS3 would've been quite tempting. But since that isn't the case this goes from "Hm, this is worth considering" to PASS.
Getting rid of backwards-compatibility on the PS3 was Sony's most dickish decision ever. I would have bought a PS 3 years ago if it had been able to run my PS2 games.

As it stands, you need at least three different game systems to be able to play the games in this collection, when they could have gone the route of, say, the Mega Man X collection and ported all the older games to a newer format.

This collection should be three to five Ps3 Blu-Ray discs and cost less than $200 US, instead of being what it is: a fucking mess.

If I had the money, I would immediately buy this even though I already own all the games. I'd buy it again for the artwork and soundtrack.
