Square Enix Wants Final Fantasy VII Spin-Off on 3DS

Multiple members of Square Enix's development teams want to see a Final Fantasy VII title on the 3DS.

Final Fantasy VII might not be remade on the 3DS anytime soon, or elsewhere for that matter, but one of its spin-offs might if wishes at Square Enix come true. Square Enix's Hajime Tabata, director of The 3rd Birthday and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, recently exposed his strong desire to see Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis come to Nintendo's 3D handheld set to launch in 2011 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103851-Nintendo-3DS-Coming-in-2011-With-300-Price-Tag].

The remake sounds like it'd be a totally new game, if Tabata gets a chance to create it. He wrote on Twitter: "If I were to make something for 3DS, I suppose it would be a remake of Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis. I'd redo the scenario structure and game design for the 3DS. I think I'd like to make an action RPG BCFF7 where a large number of Turks players play simultaneously."

Before Crisis is a cellphone game boasting 25 episodes once announced for North America, but these plans were seemingly canceled and it was never released outside of Japan. The game takes place six years before Final Fantasy VII and swaps who's good with who's bad by putting players in the shoes of the Shinra Corporation's Turks (the guys in suits). The Turks face a much more violent Avalanche rebel group, only just beginning and not yet headed by Final Fantasy VII's Barrett, which has popped up to stop the spread of a newly powerful Shinra.

The spin-off is a real-time action-RPG where players complete missions in various modes to gain experience points and find weapons and armor. Materia is collected by taking a picture with the cellphone's camera, which is analyzed to determine the type of magic the materia will provide. A blue photo would provide cure, for example.

Tabata also said that Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase, two other big names that have produced and designed many popular titles such as Kingdom Hearts [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000FQ2DTA/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285787956&sr=8-1], want to see Before Crisis on the 3DS if possible too. The problem is that Tabata only labels the remake as an "ambition," because he and others are too busy working on titles such as 3rd Birthday and Agito for the PSP at the moment, while Tabata plans to work on an HD project next.

Seeing as how nobody outside of Japan got their hands on Before Crisis, it'd be nice to see it come to North America and Europe as a 3DS title. Plus, it'll be more Final Fantasy VII, and who doesn't want that?

No, they want the -money- from a spin off on the 3DS.
How have the other ff7 spin-offs fared?

Dear god in heaven, when will square let FFVII sleep it's big sleep? They've pretty much taken their seventh game from their RPG franchise and turned it into it's own franchise, because people will buy anything with the words FFVII on it (like that animated abortion that was Advent Children)...

They are just going to keep beating that game till there is nothing left but the bones of a chocobo...

So instead of remaking something with great character development, good music and a great story, they'll make another shitty spinoff full of pseudo-intellectual bullshit and terribly angsty lady boys. Great.

Actually I've been kinda wondering about this one it seems like a really interesting game, then again why is Square even making cell phone games if they're just gonna remake it for a different portable system anyway

I'm looking at you Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded >=I (and to a much lesser extent Chain of Memories which wasn't a cellphone game but was completely remade anyway)

And people complain that Nintendo milks their properties too long. At least there haven't been 8 remakes of Super Mario 64.
Not yet anyway.

OT: Is this supposed to be a threat Square Enix? I don't want anymore FFVII! I've had enough! The original wasn't even all that great.

1 less reason to get a 3DS. Who's next?

I'm gonna burn in hell for this..but...the point of cloud using a sword (at least in clouds' case) was that he was waaay stronger than the amount of force a bullet could produce.

I wanted to like ff7 soo much, but it was just so bad...

Am I the only one who thinks this thread should be renamed "Square Enix Wants Money"?

I've been asking for this since the DSi was first announced!

Hopefully this one will be better than Crisis Core. I know a lot about the original Before Crisis, and it was... well, boring. (I didn't play it for obvious reasons, it was my mistake not being born Japanese.) It didn't look very fun to play. The combat was basic, and the entire storyline was episodic, meaning no exploration or open world of any kind - a problem Crisis Core and DoC had too. Hopefully this will completely overhaul the game, giving voice acting and a more free-roaming environment.

If not, I'll just be playing Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Actually this is going to be a remake of a cell phone game. This isn't a new game. This is just Square Enix redeeming some of their dickishness by transferring a MOBILE-EXCLUSIVE game to something more accessible.

Am I the only one who thinks that Square Enix garners more internet rage than any other publisher in existence? I swear, I see more pissing and moaning about SE than I do Activision. They're a Japanese company that makes Japanese products. If you don't like it, you don't have to but enough with the fanboy level hatred.

OT- With a FF VI remake already teased for the DS, I'm becoming more and more interested about the 3DS. What can I say, I love to give SE my money.

This is basically what I came to say, so I won't beat a dead horse here. *glares at Square-Enix*

At least we haven't had a Final Fantasy VII-2 featuring Yuffie.

Final Fantasy VII? again?!

Can't they spin-off any other FF game? I mean, I know FFVIII isn't exactly the most popular among fans, but that was mostly because of the story and game mechanics, there's no reason not to explore that world any further. And FFIX? Not even loud forum haters have anything bad about FFIX, people love that game! If they are so keen on spin-offs, why not FFIX?

I mean, yeah, making money in all honor. But surely there must be money potential in any game other than Final Fantasy VII too...

Education time.
Cloud failed to become a Soldier, so he joined Shinra security instead. He used a gun because he couldn't even lift the Buster Sword, being normal. Then the Sephiroth incident occurred, and Cloud and Zack ended up somehow in Shinra Mansion being experimented on with both Mako infusion(what makes one a SOLDIER) and Genova Cells. They broke out and fled, Zack dying and a mako-sick Cloud imprinted Zack's personality and started to believe he was a Soldier and Zack never existed. Now Cloud has both the SOLDIER powers as well as Genova enhancement, and can twirl the buster sword like a baton.
