Square: We're Not Remaking FF7, Play It On PSN

At last week's GamesCom in Cologne, FF13's Yoshinori Kitase reiterated that Square-Enix had no plans to remake the beloved Final Fantasy VII, advising fans to just play it on PSN instead.

Square's been giving a lot of its games the remake treatment in the past few years: Final Fantasy I, II, & IV, Chrono Trigger, to name a few. But the one game fans have been clamoring for to be remade for years - 1997's groundbreaking Final Fantasy VII - remains nowhere to be seen.

At GamesCom, VG247 [http://www.vg247.com/2009/08/26/ff-bosses-no-ffvii-remake-project-yet-play-psn-release-for-the-time-being/] posed the question to Final Fantasy XIII's Motomu Toriyama and Yoshinori Kitase: "Will we ever see a remake of Final Fantasy VII?"

Their answer, through a translator:

[blockquote]There's no official project that's up and running for a remake of Final Fantasy VII at this point. Both Toriyama-san and Kitase-san were involved in the development of the game, however, and it holds a special place in their hearts. They do talk about it on a personal level, like, 'If we did it it would be like this or like that.'

So, they do talk about it, but there's no official project yet.[/blockquote]

On the other hand, as they pointed out, the game was re-released on PSN [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92609-PSN-FF7-Gets-100k-Downloads] not too long ago, so fans could get their angsty pseudo-cyberpunk fix that way instead.

At this point, honestly, I just kind of want Square to remake Final Fantasy VII to make the fans stop asking about a remake of Final Fantasy VII already. I guess some things never die, no matter how much they ought to.

Not only that, but do you know how much money Square would make off it? Yeah it'll extend the falsehood that it's the "Greatest Game of All Time", but really I can deal with that more than the whining of VII's fanboys.

It would certainly bring the game to a whole new light. These days Lego characters have more personality and detail than the character models in FFVII.

Its time to let it die.
Besides any way they remake the game, it wont live up to the standards and the hype.

I'm glad this is finally being laid to rest, an FFVII remake is just not necessary. Though I wouldn't mind a retranslation so I can finally tell what the hell is going on in the damned thing.

I agree Cantfakethefunk, they should just remake it so that we can stop asking for it. I like that idea.
Mmmmmmmeh. If I were them, I wouldn't want to waste a second on remaking it, especially when there are more Final Fantasy titles in production. Of course, I've never really seen the allure of FFVII, but meh, that's just me.

This year is quite funny. It's the year of successful petitions, the year of price hikes, and the year of companies telling fans to STFU every other day.

It makes sense that they would say that, otherwise you would just get people saying "naw, I'm not buying that, the graphics suck! I'll wait for the remake with HD GWAFIX!!!1"

If I'm seeing anything from Square after FFXIII, it better be Chrono Break. That is all.

Or FFX. I would laugh so hard.

That would be funny! And personally, I'd be just as inclined to buy 8 as 7. Niether of them were favorites of mine.

I'd bet you that if they did that, then haters would say that they're milking FFVII for all it's worth (I'm pretty sure they already are saying that).

So I guess there was an unspoken agreement to only remake the sprite based games? Unless of course they skip VII altogether, then we'll never hear the end of it. I wonder how much trouble it'll be to remake a 3D game?

If they ever consider to remake a PS1 final Fantasy, please let them only update the graphics and sound engine.

The rest should stay as it is, no ruining voice overs, overacted motion capture, remixed soundtrack or any nice additional shit like a new hyperactive mascott or funky playable character.

Honestly, I don't know why they don't remake it, it would be much quicker and easier for them to make than coming up with a new idea, and it would make them a lot of money.

Maybe their waiting in case, things turn bad for the company and then they'll suddenly do it.

Ain't that a *****? They're caught in a catch-22: remake it and annoy the haters, don't remake it and piss off the fans. Can't please everyone.

OT: Ugh, again? It's available on PSN in good ol' nostalgia-vision, just download the thing and be happy. Why remake it, anyway? Anyone who's played it KNOWS what's going to happen. Hell, I've never played and I know what happens.
