After some time on the Escapist, I've noticed a few repeating themes in threads. Let's talk about what typical scenarios in the forums we've seen on the Escapist.

One example would be the "So terrible, people start looking at the persons profile" thread. Occasionally, someone makes a pointless thread with terrible grammar and features of inadequacy that simply blow your mind. Almost immediately, the subject changes to the quality of the post, and soon after you begin to see references to their profile. Example [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.147471]

It's not really a "stereotype" but a lot of people have their heads up their asses about certain topics, and they think they are more elite(smarter/better etc.) than everyone else. that about sums it up.

I think there will always be a thread of a huge event and then someone will make another one just a little while later and people will just post USE THE SEARCH BAR!

The thing about the grammar-post/profile subject changes is true. Another escapist trend seems to be very short-lived threads. A lot either get locked (like this one probably will) or no one wants to discuss the subject, and there are very few people that pay enough attention to any one 6-page long thread to keep it alive by quoting and replying to different posts.

If I come upon a 6-page thread that isn't the most interesting thing in the world, I just scroll to the bottom, post my reply, and go on to the next thing, which is, I'm sure, what a lot of other people do. No one really cares that much about what other posters are saying, and I think a large part of that is because either the posts are extremely short (a few words) or because a lot of people try to come up with smart, self-centered phrases like "You mean me?" or "You don't even WANT to know what happened to me the other day..." and no one likes to see other people do that too. That's probably the biggest factor in short thread lives.

IMHO.

also, elitism.

There's a massive amount of elitism here. Specifically about 4chan and other websites that aren't the Escapist. Is that a stereotype?

People here seem to be douchebags in general. Rampant elitism, a paradoxical conformity towards a stereotypical hatred of popular culture, not to mention an overabundance of internet dick swinging competitions.

Well, this seems as good a time as any to check out. Its been fun The Escapist. Well, not really.

Oh crap! The forum has become self-aware. Initiate emergency shut down!
"It's cut us out of the system sir!"
We are all doomed.

Yea, the forum is a little ADD with its threads.

I dislike the stereotype that everyone here is a socially inept nerd that fears women and leaving their homes. Simply isn't true.

One stereotype I constantly encounter is 'I hate elitists' guy.

They basically go on about how INTOLERANT!! and CRUEL!! a lot of the members of The Escapist can be to new members (though I'm the first to admit that that's true) because they DON'T SHARE THEIR POINT OF VIEW!!!, JUST COME FROM ANOTHER SITE!!!, or CAN'T SPELL PROPERLY!!!

But... isn't that, like, the majority of the entire internet?

Also, I agree with the elitism. A lot of us (and I'm not excluding myself here) can be pretty big pricks when we're annoyed.

I don't like the... I guess you would call them "search bar snobs". Not that there is anything wrong with letting a newcomer know the rules but some people can be such dicks about it.

Halo and God haters. Or if it's not new every five minutes the game is dumb, generic, and has too many sequels.

Wait, technically, didn't that post make you an elitist? I smell a time paradox...
Maybe, but I wouldn't look at myself as one of the Traditional Elitists, I'm more of a Progressive Elitist( yes, I'm joking), i.e. while all the above bold, caps lock, inverted, and underlined statements could apply to me I rarely am like that except in the absolute extremes; like that thread we had recently about URs closure being a joke where the OP was 10 years old and couldn't spell.

People on this website will change their opinions based on what people they admire/fear say.

Though I probably do that to without even realizing it.

Also, whenever there is a new user, at least one person will do the (Welcome to City 17) greeting.

I think its just fine to do that. The profile is a very important step for an Escapist user.
