There's your answer if the links work.

Is it me or Steves Jobs is like Peter Molyneux for computers?
Holy shit the cats are using ipads! Run Run, just run. Stop debating and run.

I would have an ipad, I just wouldn't pay any money for it. If that makes sense, I think its pretty cool but I can't really justify that level of money for it.

I'll never understand why people want this junk. If it was a true tablet, that'd be one thing but like the article says it's only useful in addition to a full computer. Also, why announce an APPLE product at the GDC? Does the iPad even support any games?

To those wondering "why" the iPad, I figured I'd speak up, since they're all the rage at my company. The fact is that the iPad (or now, the Xoom, which also doesn't natively play avi, what the hell?) is much easier to carry from meeting to meeting than the equivalent laptop and or briefcase full of paperwork. In tablets, we have a device that allows us to carry around something smaller than a binder, but at the same time we have all our vital documents for the various projects we're working on, we have our corporate email right there in front of us to keep us connected without having to look like we're staring at an open laptop or constantly checking our phone. Setting up an impromptu Skype session for out of reach clients or last-minute conferences is invaluable.

On the home front, it gives us something simple to have sitting on the endtable that we can grab to quickly bang out a few emails or do a quick bit of administration without having to boot up a laptop or work on a three-inch screen.

Many of these things may seem like minor conveniences, and they are, but this is what tablets are for. And, to be frank, when you work in the entertainment industry, image is super important too, and tablets are good image right now.

Very well said. Apple hate is pretty ridiculous. I don't have a desk job or anything like this, but I find this device incredibly useful.

I have all my music with me wherever I go, a bunch of fun games, and with a hotspot I've got everything I need from a computer (with the exception of flash and PC games) all in a pretty high performance package that is roughly the size of a comp notebook.

As far as Apple products all I have atm is an iPhone 3gs but I spend so much time using it on the road, or yutzing around on my couch during commercials while watching TV that I can't wait to get this to ease the eyestrain.

Oh and I don't see why everyone's talking about the pricing of this. It's a device with more features than the first iPad BUT IT COSTS THE SAME. Seems more than fair to me, and I'm not an limitlessly wealthy man, I'm a school bus driver. If you really look at other tablet devices that have similar features it's not that expensive at all.

As for how soon it was put out, it's no big secret that Apple creates new models of it's devices every year. I don't see people griping about this when car manufacturer's do it. People complaining about this need to realize that they don't always have to have the best model.

Neither did I until I did some research and found out it is the cheapest full screen VNC tablet on the planet. I couldn't care less about the reset of its features. After all it's just a big screen iTouch and I already had one of them.

I needed a device that would simultaneously let me see and control my computer from the other side of a room, and my iPod Touch was just to small to cut it. An iPad and a small blutooth keyboard was cheaper and faster than buying another laptop for a lag less VNC connection, or pure VNC device.

So...there's a brand new version of a device that's still brand new? Damn, Apple give your products so time to age before replacing them. Exactly how much disposable money do you think trendy hipster douche-canoes have? If I were to get a pad style device...I'd go for an andriod version. They're so much cheaper.
The new tablet from Samsung running on Honeycomb, android 3.1, just beat the current iPad in performance and comes in at the same price for 3g, but it also has a free 4g upgrade FTW. Personally I prefer android devices and their customization, my phone is Android, but sadly some of the Android software just isn't on par with some of the iOS software. Granted if all you want are games then they are 98% identical, and Flash/Java support are major trumps in Androids corner.

I'd say buy both, what else are you going to spend money on? Food, don't make me laugh.

Pah, no USB, no Flash, out dated before it's even released. The Android equivalent already has HD camcorder, as well as a hdmi output, dual core processors 10 hour + battery life. Sorry Apple you have missed the bus on this one, BIG time.
Doesn't that also cost 200 dollars and a monthly subscription more than the 32g iPad wifi equivalent?

I wasn't aware that USB and Flash where that expensive.

Well, let's call a spade a spade here. This came out now to split the market and hopefully lower Xoom adoption. Everyone knows the "real" upgraded iPad will come out nearer the holiday season. This is barely improved because it's a rushed .5 release, and it probably never would've hit the market if Motorola hadn't been putting their tablet out.

The one thing that makes me rage the most about Apple products an their cycles is not the scam, it's not the smugness, it's not the marketing, it's not the price.

It's the freaking consumerism and obsolescence of things that are still not remotely obsolete.

So now you will have these bunch of people who will run out and buy the new version of the product they already have and use perfectly everyday because it has those 100 more mediocre pixels or whatnot. What happens to most of those perfectly functional items that are being replaced? I'm thikning some will get sold, but a lot will just simple stop being used. That's intentional genaration of e-waste that's no waste at all. It's that drooling, goggly-eyed mindnumbness that apple addicts seem to live on and not even look back, and how defensive they are of being continually goaded into spending tons of money on shiny new things they already own.

ok, rant over.

OT: Apple will be Apple and continually price gouge people who are too dumb to know better.
This sort of editorialising seems so baseless and I wonder what is gained from calling people dumb for spending *their* money on whatever they want. I mean, there are dumber money pits then an iPad.

It is about as valuable as me replying to it.
I am loathe to be a part of the cycle and let someone's narrow-mindedness cause me to engage.

I agree with you, but where does (as Virgil mentioned) CNN say that it is "fair to the subject presented?" It doesn't, because the word news carries with it a connotation. Virgil's argument is that The Escapist never claimed to be news. My argument is that it has, does, and will. I also find it entertaining - most of the time. But on a site where thousands of people read the word "news" and see "articles" and watch "live coverage" I think it is safe for them to assume they are getting news. Therefore, when lopsided opinionated pieces make it into the "news feed" and get discussed in "the news room" I think it is unfair to whatever that particular author randomly decides to insult. Even my local paper has a counter-point section for editorials. The Escapist covers every piece of actual news and brands it arbitrarily with the view points of whatever arbitrarily chosen "reporter" or as I suppose they would call themselves "editorialist" is available. These people attend new conferences, gain press access, and offer interviews. Some sort of journalistic code should be in place.
I agree that the word 'news' does have a connotation to it, but even the first time I stepped into the "news" room I never expected it to be, well, reliable in the sense of true (and take that with a grain of salt -- most of the places that go out of their way to claim to be fair and reliable I do not trust) news. Which, again, they never claimed it either. Be honest with me: did you? Though I guess your point has more to do with too much opinion, not that there should be a lack of it.

And I mean. . .what else are they supposed to call it?

I guess if it comes down to straight opinion differences -- entertainment value vs ethical treatment -- then we're never going to agree.

I really hope you're wrong, that would severely shake the confidence of a huge chunk of Apple's core supporters (pun not intended)

I've heard the rumors as well, but I still suspect that it's either false info to try and scare away early sales, or misheard info on a 7 inch iphone/ipad hybrid in the works which would make much more sense.

Putting out 2 products of the same line in the year would attack sales on both the new and the new newer model. It'd be an idiotic move.

Steve Jobs is not Bobby Kotick.

I hope.

If you build it they will come.

No seriously, try making something first and then second don't insult your customers by calling them doucehebags. That is a time-honoured business strategy.

wow, another overpriced and redundant offering from Apple!

Never mind, it's shiny and has an Apple logo on it, so the iSheep will still buy it in droves...

I've been waiting for a decent Android tablet, but it's been taking long enough. Now there are finally some good ones starting to make an appearance, they're charging similar prices to the iPad, which is ridiculous. I won't be buying a tablet at all until someone releases a decent spec Android 2.3 or 3.0 device for no more than $300 Australian.
The Xoom would be perfect if they halved the price.

I once came across an interesting question: how many of the millions of iPad sales are actually still used? You can't exactly read PDFs in the brightness, and there's nothing that it does that can't be done on a laptop half the price.

Average conversation with Ipad owner.

You: What's so special about the ipad?
ipad user: erm..um..it's a new way to view it.
You: view what?
ipad user: Um..Media
You:What if you want to view flash. or play games?
ipad user :.....
You: How much did that cost?
ipad user: *walks away angrily*
