I still absolutely loathe level 25 in Crash Bandicoot 3, "Bug Light."
No light, except for a a time-limited tiny fairy. Goddamn.

(Well, at least I didn't have to hear "HEY! LISTEN!")
I thought I was the only one o.o (I know I'm not but still). God, that was ANNOYING.

OT: Swimming levels where you're either extremely confined or extremely likely to get lost, and you move like..a rock or something. Also, timers, as someone mentioned, and I know it's not relevant a 100% here, but fetch quests and escort quests can godie.

Chapter 4 in Paper Mario:TTYD, I hate going back and forth between the town and the Chapel.Plus it has Doopliss bug you every time and all the nasty hard headed enemies.

Any Timed Mission in God Hand due to the task being not to bad but having all the enemies gang bang you if you ignore them.

Those Damn Sliding on the Ice Puzzles.

Finally Wild Arms 4 everything about it. The Characters are annoying,it's piss easy provided you don't get a bullshit ambush, Jude has to be as vocal as possible when he jumps or pushes blocks or any physical activity and the story is just not that interesting. It's sad because It's predecessors were pretty damn good.

It has one redeeming quality, one guy punches out a tank.

I still haven't beaten Donkey Kong 64 because of the stupid fucking ending where you have to play and beat the original arcade Donkey Kong to continue.

Playing Mass Effect again has only caused me to be further enraged by it's terrible design choices. Only this time my hate for the side quests is rivaled by my hate for the AI's complete stupidity. You'd think Garrus would know when to get behind cover instead of standing out in the open and drawing all enemy fire towards him like a magnet.

Though I suppose I should give a more specific example. In Pikmin 2 the Submerged Castle was a nightmare to complete on my first try, and time has not made it any less aggravating. Based on people's other complaints in this thread, it seems that Nintendo goes out of their way to make their water levels as frustrating as possible.

Damn water wraith.
while I love Mass Effect, and don't actually mind the sidequests, and don't actually HATE this part, I gotta say the NPC AI is pretty shitty... I thought "Hey, Garrus's class gets a bonus with sniper rifles... I'll pump his stats into sniper rifles and see how that goes."

nope, he's a moron with it, so I gave him back his assault rifle.
I like Mass Effect, though I'm not entirely sure why considering how many massive issues I have with it. I'm guessing it;s because BioWare really fleshed out the setting, creating an interesting and unique universe. Though every time I think about how interesting the game's setting is I'm reminded of how actually exploring it is incredibly dull. Everythign you do just feels so repetitive. When a giant worm erupting from the ground doesn't interest the player, something has gone wrong.

And yes, Garrus can truly be a moron when you give him Sniper Rifles. I still have him use them though because he can sometimes prove to be useful with them. Though I would be lying if I said him charging out of cover to shoot Geth at point-blank range was an uncommon occurrence. Meanwhile Wrex is brandishing a shotgun with fully charged shields, yet he refuses to move out of his cover 10 feet away from the firefight.

That pissed me off on my second play through. I thought that chapter was going to be a lot easier since I already knew his name. Then I remembered that the "P" had been removed from the bored. It's like the game was taunting me. And it certainly didn't help that the forest you have to walk through if full of Hyper Celfts and Hyper Goombas, who can destroy you if you're careless. Or if an annoying Dazee puts you to sleep.

Those Damn Sliding on the Ice Puzzles.

I really want to know who the hell thought this was a good idea, at any point in gaming history. It has never been fun, challenging, or anything else you would consider to be good qualities. They only serve to torment and frustrate the player.

And Tales of Symphonia had the nerve to do it twice.

"Territorial Oak burst into flames!"

Yeah I hated that place. On my first play through I couldn't figure out how the hell I was supposed to get past the pencil statute. I had already tried investing in Apple and Orange kid, explored every inch of Twoson, and visited the only accessible part of the valley. Having exhausted every option multiple times, I gave up and looked for the answer online. Turns out I had done everything correctly. All you had to do was invest in Apple Kid and visit the statue. Then on the way back he calls you on your phone to tell you about his new invention. Unless of course one of the annoying enemies kills you on the way back. Then Apple Kid won't call you until you visit the statue again and survive all the enemy encounters on the way back to town. Of course there's nothing to indicate that you have to do this, so I ended up wandering around aimlessly for hours.

And to think this all would have been avoided if Apple Kid called you right after you found the pencil statue. Or better yet, right after you gave him money.

Oh and speaking of Earthbound, that reminds me of the Monkey Cave. Who ever designed that dungeon can go to hell.

The Wastelands in Hexen. The game has plenty of gruesome challenges such the two Heresiarchs, but there are 2 maps with perfectly hidden instant-kill spikes that pop up and down randomly, and Castle of Grief only has them in the opening courtyard despite being far later-game. Quicksave every two minutes while you're in there or be ready to scream. You'd swear the Wasteland spikes change places.

What's with the harder version of an obstacle being presented first?

The main temple in Phantom Hourglass, I enjoyed the game for the most part but having to keep going through every floor with the stupid timer and the unkillable enemies just sucked all the fun out of it.

I've finally gotten to the point where Onin's game isn't hard anymore
...you did know you could pause durring Onin's game and just look for all the buttons that are on screen and then just unpause and hit them all really quick right?

As for a part of a video game that has not gotten any easier or less frustrating to this day, MGS1's torture sequence. My thumbs weep in terror STILL. However, I refuse to lose. I will not ride off into the sunset with Otacon when I could be doing that with Meryl.
But... but... HAL! and DAVE! The ultimate BROMANCE!

Train graveyard? At least it's short! And there's no boss! After having your materia stolen, you have to walk across an entire continent, complete a runaround quest in Wutai village, climb up the mountain, and then probably get wiped out by Rapps. ALL without magic.

Dammit, now I wanna play it again, too.

Hmm...gotta admit, much as I love Wizardry 8, I hate, hate, hate Bayjin and underwater caves. Fire spells don't work underwater, Rynjin are a chore to fight, the undersea creatures are even worse, and Nessie...oh dear god, Nessie...

...
Oh yes, every time I reach the Sea water caves, after the mandatory running in circles to make Vi unconscious and force her in(I'm not the only one who does that, right?), I cast soul shield on every fight asap and mentally prepare myself for the worst. But we have to give credit to Nessie for being one of the two, maybe three truly difficult and rewarding fights in a game, that's otherwise attrition-based(and I'm certainly not counting the final fight among those - the Savant is a wimp compared to Nessie!) :)
"How did we end up here? I'm not comfortable here at all...now look! You take me out of here right now!"

I actually never considered doing that to Vi. I mean, naturally not for Bayjin (I leave that RPC slot open for Sergeant Glumph), but to get her into Rapax Rift I always just used the T'rang portal, and for the Sea Caves I use a couple of portal spells. Still...makes one really appreciate RFS-81, huh?

And yeah, I certainly won't disagree on that, difficult or rewarding; hooray for Excalibur! Usual tactics for me are every buffing spell I know beforehand (except Haste, stupid "no fire spell" prohibition), equip everyone with healing potions and resurrection powder, enter combat and charge before Nessie realizes you're there, start casting Soul/Element Shield, Bless, and Superman, and pray fervently. Occasionally, I only win because she beats on me so much that she falls unconscious...

I'm just not as fond of the fight because it's the one I routinely have to reload and try again. I rarely have to do that with, say, the Sorceress fight (I'm assuming that's one of the others you were talking about?). Or even the Rapax army fight...though that one wasn't especially rewarding. Unless you count finally killing that annoying Rapax Prince.

I keep reading this and I always laugh. Seriously? You are all pussies, that's all I have to say. You know nothing of insanity. Welcome to FFXII's Great Crystal dungeon. The moment you zone in, the game turns off your map and your compass. You have to navigate it by exploration and memory and with no indication of where north and south are. You also have to press switches that open locked doors basically from one side of the dungeon to the other, and you have to get there, without getting lost, on a time limit.

"Water temple". Pffft.

God damn you I had repressed that!

Whats worse is you have to do it three times. Story mode, once for Ultima, and once for Omega Mk XII

ANY time I see a timer.

On anything.

Fuck timers.
I'm with you on that. I hate it when a game tries to rush me, I like making my own pace goddamn it...

Even when it seems realistic for you to be against time at that moment I still hate it, I hate being rushed and I usually panic and end up dying.
Most recent offender for me were the race missions in Assasin's Creed 2.

I failed them around three times each because I was in such a hurry that Ezzio would go flying off the side if a high building.

They really didn't organise the checkpoints well in those, which was extra annoying given the otherwise fluid feel of getting around in the game.

Are you serious? I loved that section. I also loved the Motorcycle chase in MGS3. But it would be cool shooting from an Helicopter.
