It's funny to see games marketed as realistic when they have a single person going up against an entire alien race and is able to nearly instintaniously recover from injuries.

I want to see a FPS level in a volcano where you have to avoid the lava and falling rocks.

Awesome comic, Shamus.
Instead of simply being overcome by the toxic gas?
Well, there could be a timer, but everyone knows that as long as you don't touch the lava, [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ConvectionSchmonvection] you'll be perfectly safe.

Now that I've distracted you, I make my escape.
What is this realism you speak of?
Reality is asking yourself are you happy? [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msl57Xfl5u4]
Well, I was, then my EYES STARTED BLEEDING... :(
Touhou tends to have that effect on people, especially when you actually play the games.

If your eyes started bleeding from that, then I think your brain would melt if you saw the official Carameldansen video. I'd link to it, but I've potholed enough of my posts.
Blasphemy! There's no such thing as enough potholing.... :p

In all honesty, my eye problem was some grit that got under my contact, not, literally bleeding but still very painful.

Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Red Faction : Guerrila. I've never even played Resistance 2 or Red Faction : Guerilla and I still recognised them. If that's "everything looks the same", then... Wow, that looks pretty different.

Damn Shamus, between this and your last one, I'd honestly think you weren't even trying any more.
Notice how you are the only one here that knows/cares?

Personnally I have given up on the shooter genre. No one can trump the fun of old ones like gears 2, hl2, and ut2004x

Not to mention the 0 thinking need. I speak from playing CoD 4.

Where's tactic or strategy?. You get told where to go, what to do and there's no alternative ways to move through. The one time where it is, it's just a tiny move around so instead of go to the baddies all the way from the front, you get to go around to finally get to fight them from the front. No flanking, not sneak up on them, not ignoring the targets presented to focus on the mission because the accompanying guys will not keep going with you until every enemy in the way is needlessly dead.

Worst spend 60? ever.

Now X-Wing, there's a lot of tactic and strategical thought to give. Beautiful mission 4 of the first ITOD. And many others. There going wildly to kill everything that moves just won't work. And just prioritizing targets according to ship type isn't always enough. I love too that mission with that truck that is an Y-Wing that forces you to go for the targets while a TIE fighter squadron is chasing you. Awesome!.

So this cartoon is from two years ago and all you had to do to make it current was put a 2 on the end of Modern Warfare and Bad Company?
Now how's that for progress![HEADING=1]SIGH[/HEADING]
I think that was the point.

He's showing how little things seem to have changed.
"War never changes"?

You run around with various guns and shoot things. How is it not?

Also that description of the new XCom game just makes it sound like another shooter with a shopping section between missions. Real innovation there.

Have you ever played Fallout 3? The mechanics make sure that it plays nothing like a traditional shooter, and it tries to make you use VATS as much as possible. Also, it's an RPG in every sense of the word.

You can opt for traditional shooting, granted the guns that are still effectual as such are rather limited. Still a good way to dispatch lesser enemies without having to wait through that awful slowed mechanic.

The term Role-Playing Game has become so ubiquitous in regards to video games that it really becomes null point. All games cross the classic genre boundaries. As it stands, you can still play it in the means of the typical first-person shooter, thus qualifying it for the label.

The game is much slower paced than pretty much any shooter game, and enemies, most of which have much more health than any shooter enemies, tend to simply rush you rather than take cover, and most firefights consist of either VATS usage or standing out in the open shooting each other until one person dies. As well, the inclusion of dialogue trees, extensive inventory and skill management, and in depth character creation pushes this game well out of the realm of shooters and into RPG territory.

Most of the sprogs on this website are too young to remember why the tactical gameplay of x-com is great and matters. Actually, most do not remember why gameplay matters and were raised on games where style and story are everything.

O tempora, o mores.

Being an RPG does not remove it of it's shooter qualification. Like many games, it is a genre hybrid.

My brain is bleeding now, thank you very much.

Brain hemorrhaging aside, I have to agree Chipperz, as much as it saddens me to say. This was always a great strip, but recently I haven't found it all that funny.

Hey, you're not Starke! Oh no, Starke's been eaten! That aside, if you actually watched all those videos through to the end, then I'm impressed.

As far as the comic goes, Shamus has to make several every week, so sometimes he'll miss the mark. I have faith that Shamus will stop moping about X-com and return to the regularly scheduled program soon.
