Bottom line of this thread seems to be that all those things we wish didn't catch probably did somewhere. Except the only thing that deserves to:

YES.

Of all the listed things, I think "selfie" bothers me the most. Not the activity of taking photos of yourself but the misapplication of the term. A "selfie" is a wank. It can only be a wank. It can't have more than one meaning because all of those meanings would be wank. You can take a photograph of yourself wanking if you wish, but that would not be taking a selfie of a selfie. That would be a photo of a selfie, or wank.

ps Yes we do have Hamburgers and Fries in England, but we call French Fries "chips".

Selfies. I'm pretty sure you holding up your camera with a very gratitious view of your wannabe cleavage to make your self-pitying wank of a self-esteem improve a little, is great, but it's pretentious, and really annoying.

Really, I don't come across a lot; I try to avoid those places of society and the internet. Also news anchors using memes and talking about video games in order to seem cool. Drives me up the wall.

On a completely different tack, I'm going to go with things that bug me based on popular entertainment:

Justin Timberlake as an actor - He's like the Madonna of this decade. That's not a good thing.

Alexa Ray Joel - For those who don't know, this is Billy Joel's daughter. A few years ago, she had a song called "Notice Me". Which probably says all you really need to know about her ability to hold an audience. That, and the fact that daddy never taught her not to sing through her nose. It's very clear that someone's trying really hard to make her happen, because she just released a cover of "Just the Way You Are".

I watch Once Upon a Time (don't judge me, I used to think it was a lot of fun). In the first season, they introduced Belle. Rumplestiltskin was The Beast. OK. When she showed up in Season 2, almost every time she showed up in a scene with Rumple, it was to remind the audience that they were supposed to be shipping that. Which, as attractive as I find both actors, they have zero chemistry, and the relationship dynamic is gross. I finally gave up after an episode or so ago when a plot point hinged on "the strength of their love". Really, writers, stop trying to make it happen.

And this is my feminist soul snapping into action after Miley Cyrus called herself a "feminist": Pop culture, stop trying to convince women that empowerment comes from sexing yourself up. In the real world, if you try and "sexy" your image up, people think all you really want others to notice is your sexual attributes to cover the fact that you're a bimbo (see: Palin, Sarah) and you don't get taken seriously. Yes, feminism IS about choice and this is not about "slut-shaming" anyone. BUT, if you're dancing around in flesh-colored latex while not making some justifiably artistic statement about it being satire, you don't get to slap the word "feminist" on it just because nobody else is willing to tell you otherwise.

tl; dr on the last one: Ask any leading feminist if Miley's doing anything more revolutionary than what Madonna did thirty years ago. Unless, you know, you want to turn sexuality into something gross. In which case Miley is a pioneer.

People who say "hashtag" out loud, and people who say "spoiler alert" outside the context of actually talking about spoilers. If you do this, you are the worst. THE WORST.

"I don't believe in it, therefore it isn't real."

Let's get one thing straight.

We can measure, and with some degree of frequency, we can manipulate events or predict events via consistent predecessors of various type of phenomena. Reality is Reality because we can observe, predict, and interact with the phenomena that compromises existence.

That being said, Societal Reality is only as constant as the person's perception seeing it.

Racism isn't a giant thing if you're not exposed to it that often. How can racism still be a thing if you don't witness it.

Racism is a giant thing if you're exposed to it often. How can anyone deny racism is still prevalent when you see it all the time?

The friendzone isn't a thing because it's just a lot of 'nice guys' bitching that not everyone he's 'nice' to spreads their legs for him at the drop of a hat.

The friendzone is a thing because it's just a lot of women who lose interest in someone who took too long to start a romance thing going and she got attached to the idea of friendship.

The friendzone is a thing because it's just some women who rather say the word 'friend' instead of 'you're not attractive to me at all'

Facebook is important because of communication and ease thereof.

Facebook is evil because it marginalizes real communication with the idea of ease thereof.

There are so many ways to look at things, and everyone is just so ready to have one idea of what all of this experience of life can be... all we're doing is limiting ourselves.

Yeah given Iraq they should have been renamed to pointless killing fries or go get some oil fries. That would really stick it to France. But somehow I don't think thats as catchy
'Geno-fries' has a nice ring to it and harks back to the slaughter of the natives, perfect to celebrate American patriotism (and other countries too, to be fair (you could enjoy them with some German 'holo-sauce-t'))!

I'd have to say Google+ since Google are desperately trying to make their failed attempt at usurping Facebook unfail by forcing it on everyone who uses Youtube and Gmail, dragging those services down in the process. 'Look, G+ membership went up by 2000% today. We're so good at social media-ing!'

Mine is for all the people making anime: Enough with the goddamn time skips. I can't be the only person sick of these right? They just seem so pointless to me. If you want me to be invested in your characters and story, don't just skip a couple years saying "Psh, they don't matter, trust me. nothing cool could have possibly happened in these years that you'd want to see" One piece, Naruto, Fairy tail.. ugh, end that shit

Animated gifs. They were supposed to be a new form of animation I believe. Nope. Just a way to annoy people or pass the time amusing yourself on Deviant Art.

Oooh, there's a thing that did catch on that I doubt anyone expected would: Deviant Art.

I have something against this on a more serious note, especially considering sexuality, gender identity, social justice, mental disabilities (or 'neuratypical' as they want to make it). Basically everything Tumblr is obsessed with (sadly I'm pretty much forced to use it).

Everything needs to have a label, everything has to be a separate 'thing'. And I hate it. Or rather, my autistic brain hates it. I can't deal with all these labels. I just can't. They make me humongously uncomfortable, I can't help it. Lots of that comes forth from a personal uncertainty on who or what the hell I am but all these little boxes and cubes are just too...confusing? I don't know what to call it.

I just can't deal with all these things, there's too much. And because there's too much of it and because of my personal confusion I just want to pretend it doesn't exist. Is it healthy? Probably not, but I don't know what else to do. I just really don't like myself I suppose, I want everything to be simple.

Girls/Women (I'm sure there are males out there who do the same, but so far I have only encountered the former) who go on how they like character X "even though he's evil" tihi Imsoedgy.
What they usually mean is "I like character X because he's good looking, has a tragic past and I could totally fix him."

You know, ever since the "selfie" became a thing, I've been silently facepalming often on the interent. Not only does the word sound rather pretentious, that's also how the act looks. Dunno why, but I'm a bit averse to people doing stuff that just screams "Hey, look at me, look at me!"
I feel people started using the word thinking it would sound like technical jargon and elevate it somehow. It's still a fucking picture of yourself! And stop pursing your lips, dammit.

To me, Selfie is a character from Final Fantasy. I just can't see the word as anythng other than her :p (Yeah I know it's spelled "Selphie", but it still sounds exactly the same)

Agreed. I really hate that. It gets really annoying when they have to invent a new word for every little sexual preference people might have. Like this one person who claimed to be "sapiosexual." Please, people, just say you're into clever people. Don't come up with some label just so you can sound more special. I mean, sure, not everyone can be labeled as hetero-, homo-, or bisexual, but don't use ten-dollar words just to sound cooler.

And while we're on the subject on tumblr, the victim-wannabees... There was this one user that wore glasses, and claimed that when people with good eyesight wear glasses to look good it was ableism.
Sheesh.

Friendzone. The very concept is ridiculous, as is the word. Sadly, this is also one of the things on the list that are already things, but should stop.

From experience on this forum, I've learned that quite a lot of people here think it's a thing and will come to its defense.
You're all free to do so, but I will not debate it with you. Go ahead. You "win". If you want to think it's a thing I will not try to convince you otherwise.
Unlike some folks on this forum, I agree with you completely.

The concept of the "Friendzone" is nothing more than a disgusting attempt to vilify someone who won't bang you (as in the general "you") or won't get into a relationship with you as if it's their fault and no one else's. There's always two sides to a story, after all, so blaming the other person and acting like you didn't do anything wrong is immature, selfish, and borderline narcissistic.

And yet the "Friendzone" has become a thing and a reason for people to demand sympathy instead of just moving on. And people are willing to give sympathy to the "Friendzoned"... ugh...
The 'friendzone' is a thing. Whether it should be called such, however is another matter... As it is anything but friendly.

One gets put into the 'friendzone' when the person one is interested in decides they have no interest in return as a boy/girlfriend, but they don't have the courage to admit this. Thus one is trapped in the friendzone, getting mixed messages or flat out lies to keep from 'hurting feelings' or otherwise damaging the already present friendship.

For inexperienced young men and women... Well, it sucks. One may love this person, but one will never know why exactly he or she is not getting anywhere. This leads to frustration, hopelessness and depression. And it goes on until either the love interest ends it or the one gives up and moves on.
The friend zone is an imaginary construct of the wannabe Romeo who just can't take a hint. A target of affection is not obligated to return affection nor should they be held responsible for failure to return affection. It's also a way for Mr. Romeo to explain away why their affection wasn't returned. It's not that they're unappealing or just not right for the person, it's because girls are mean and just decide to cockblock males for fun! It couldn't possibly have anything to do with Romeo's faults since true love means loving somebody for who they are (even if "who they are" isn't fit physically, mentally, or emotionally for human mating rituals).

Nothing good can come from the continued belief in a friend zone. Trust me.
