That xbox live ban does very little. Most of the kids on there don't pay for the service, their parents do. So, they don't care about wasting the money.

It's not necessarily the amount of annoyance you receive, how many games you play, what network you're on. Human nature generally tends towards negativity, now I don't mean trolling or "tea-bagging" here.

I was on CoD4 last night for the life of me the only player I remember from one game of about 10, is the one who had a headset, playing R & B constantly and shouting "BOOM! Headshot" or something similar/appropriate on a kill or death. The other 9 games that were fine (although I didn't win any) I can barely remember.

Point in case, something negative sicks out, so to does something very positive, but we all know which seems to happen more commonly, we remember something that sticks out. Even if we have a huge win streak one night, I bet if one person acts the way that guy did, you'd only remember that and not how much fun you were having prior or post

So there's this new theory floating around, I saw it on GT's Bonus Round, and in the shop where I work. Apparently, PSN being free is actually detracting from the experience. The idea goes like this:

People don't pay to play on PSN, and therefore it is difficult to deny them the privilege. Basically, a one month ban on XBL is costing you money and the threat of that ban keeps people in line. Without anything at risk on the network, people behave even WORSE than they do on Xbox Live. This creates a less enjoyable play enivornment and keeps the online population low.

I don't know how much stock I put in this theory, but it's come up a couple times today and its pretty interesting. Also, I can't afford a PS3, free online or not, so I have no opportunity to test it.
the theory makes sense, but having played on both XBL and PSN I would have to say that it doesn't work out. I have been playing alot of Resistance 2 co-op and multiplayer lately and its very rare that I run into anyone acting stupid or team killing. However, on Halo 3 I have had numerous rounds ruined for me by a jackass screaming at me or others over his mic.

ps. I think there might be stock in the theory that PSN has less douchebags because fewer people have mics. However, I usually play with mic'd people in the R2 co-op as well as socom and i still rarely end up with a douchebag in my rounds.

I've played a few hours of the PSN. Some resistance, some COD4, some resistance two and some Warhawk. In any case were someone had a mic, It made me immediately want to turn off my TV. Not just from the voices coming through the TVset (why the fuck did Sony not includ a little jack on the PS3 controller? Bluetooth headsets blow, and I just want to use a basic headset), but the voices were typically some asshat telling people what to do. Mind you, a game where someone had a headset was rare, but still. And maybe it's only because I'm going by my most recent XBL experiences which have frequently used the party system, but I don't seem to see that many assholes on anymore. The games where we in lobby typically didn't have loud honking dickholes in them, and any honking that happened was done by us in game, when the other team couldn't hear us.

When the PS3 becomes more popular, this will happen a lot more I think. Especially with people making fake accounts for whatever reason.

That theory falls apart by the fact that people on the PsN do not act like jackasses the whole time. In fact, paying for live gives people a sense of entitlement, making them feel like they can act however they want. So paying for Live makes it worse.
Nice evidence you've both brought to the table. I'm convinced.

Tbh, in my little experience of Live (I've only ever really played COD3 multiplayer to any real extent :embarrassed:) Ive found the ones paying for Live arn't usually the ones hooting n tooting; its their sons.

Same amount of evidence put forward by the OP. We're dealing purely with theory here.
Hence the "you've both".

what kind of evidence would you really like them to propose?

Survey finds PSN more friendly than Live.

Report finds 30% of PSN users are asshats compared to Live's 17%

because an actual survey or report on those subjects wouldn't be biased at all.

True, but using completely biased evidence is just as bad as making a bold unsupported statement. Which gets back to the whole "what actual evidence would you want them to bring up." thing.

Especially in a thread with the word "theory" right there in the title.
Theory

A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

I'm guessing that theory is used in the non scientific way. The way where it's more like a hypothesis.

I can't see this being the case.
I have had no problems on PSN. I'm always polite and this is what I intend to get back.
I've heard Live is bad for this but can't you ask the person in charge of the game to get rid of them. That usually keeps people in check.
