Study Finds Girl Gamers Are Seriously Hardcore

Well damn...

My entire belief that women needed more respect in gaming has just been thrown for a loop. Of course, I remember playing Ragnarok Online, and I'd go out and do a few quests or get a few levels. Women on the other hand, would stay in Prontera Square, socializing with others and all in all, chillin'. I guess I can compare and find that there is a lot to say about this article.

Hum, I'd like to see a survey of more than just one game, and also where people are from, as that may have a large impact on results. Out of 4 female gamers I know, only one of them is a hardcore gamer, two of them (including the hardcore gamer) aren't socially normal, and the other two are are pretty good looking (just to break the sterotype).

It's nice to know that the second a stereotypically 'unattractive' female gamer is put up everyone yells and screams in horror whether they themselves are the pinnacle of sexy or otherwise. Here's the deal. We're not in gaming to be your eye candy and you have no right to flame us, troll us or otherwise just because we're females, attractive or otherwise. How the fuck would you feel to have a bunch of people saying shit like that about you?

Grow up and be a little more considerate.
If I was a female gamer, I'd just have to consider the irony that the average male gamer (in my experience) is over weight, unattractive and socially inept. So for a bunch of potentially sweaty fat-balls to be joking over female gamers, got to see the humour in that.
o.0 Overweight? What nerds do you know? All the ones I know (including myself) can't put on weight if we try. And I have. =P We're more the type that can game all day and eat nothing but junk, then look better than someone who goes to the gym every morning. Irony.. It's awesome. On the plus side, we always fit into a suit. :D
True, a lot of nerds I know are skinny, but bullshit you look better than someone who goes to the gym every morning. I used to have the problem that I couldn't put on weight, so I go to the gym 3 days a week and I've put on a good stone of muscle, resulting in becoming broader, pecks etc. So yeah, the skinny gamers could put on weight and look better if they went to a gym, don't kid yourself there. And again, looking like a half starved animal is just more reason for chicks to rip the piss out of male gamers slagging them off.
rofl. It's not half starved animal although I used to get comments like that when I was younger.

Better than gym is Tae Kwon Doe, Soccer, Fencing. With running and biking whenever I'm bored. About to take up surfing, after a winter indoors, the tan is down to radiation from computer screen only. All of which are technically still in nerd territory apparently.. And waaaaaaaay more fun than lifting weights for hours on end. Bike > Exercise Bike always.

Gym means there's only 1 fashion style you can go for and you have that fake look to you. Well muscled and slim means you can go for anything and look great. Therefore I beat gym people. Although.. I'm starting to think I'm a freak compared to most people..

Although this is the internet. I could be a 5 headed, 20 tentacled octopus biased against gym people for all you know..
Oh dear...
Firstly, just cardio is not better than cardio and weight training. That thought is simply bizarre. Secondly, all that is hardly "the type that can game all day and eat nothing but junk, then look better than someone who goes to the gym every morning" is it now?
The fake look? Right, clearly you have never been to a gym as you think everyone is throwing down steroids like pez. Go for anything? What the hell are you on about? If you go to the gym, you can still be slim and muscled, but even better, is to look a bit bigger and muscled, as being slim usually means not very well toned (broadness etc).
Stop living in your own world kid, you do not beat gym guys, you just look like another skinny guy that does some sport, not a guy that bust his balls to look much better:

That's gym work there, not just cardio, and I think the people that count (attractive women) think it looks a whole lot better.
Nah, all gym people I know are obsessed with getting big. Their reflexes are lame, they can't run for any decent length of time, their muscles will fail under a reasonable test (give them a pair of weights to carry on said run), but they "look good". Fake. All gym rats I've ever seen are like that. Self improvement = obsessed with image = eventual decline into fake.

Face is different, and as I said, I've missed my usual tanning months for this year. But apart from that, yes that is what I'm like. Original point is gone though, my new one is that you can do that without going to the gym.
So all the people you know are every person that goes to a gym. No, don't generalise like that. As you've clearly never been to a gym before, I can tell you that most people aren't obsessed with getting huge, but more getting toned, e.g. Brad Pitt photo.
And who cares about reflexes? That just sounds like you are trying to justify what you can do against guys which women will most likely say look better than you. As for running, most can run very well as they spend a good long time on the running machines. Please actually go to a gym before you pretentiously talk as if you've been to one before.
Plus, saying they have no stamina is also bullshit as not everyone at the gym is obsessed with just mass. Fake? Again, more sounds like you'd rather try to claim that being skinny is good, whereas being "ripped" isn't. End of the day, the women like the latter, not the former, so that ends that debate. I've never heard a woman go "Oh wow, did you see his reflexes?"
Not to mention, your original point of playing games and eating junk all day while looking better than people going to the gym I think we can safely was trash, as for your new one, again, bull. Find me someone who is jacked e.g. Brad Pitt, and doesn't go near a gym. Also if you could tell me why everyone who goes to the gym doesn't have stamina, you may have yourself an award winning paper right there.
lol, I've been to a gym before. Several times. =P And everyone I've seen sucks, maybe it's just me though.

Again, note the octopus picture. We're debating looks over the net when you could be a giant wrym and I'm that pic.

I would note that everyone who is "ripped" is generally concentrating on looks and leaving out stamina. So put them on a running machine and they fall down. And note I didn't say _everyone_ who went to a gym, just everyone I'd ever seen at a gym, people I know going to a gym, etc, etc. Just personal experience here, in which they all suck.

Note women will like guys in leather jackets who treat em like crap. That's not really my "thing" so I stopped caring about their opinions a long time ago. =P I'm thinking more of comparing to guys here. Yes, the skinny nerds I know look better than most guys/girls and don't gym, the ones that exercise still don't gym, and still look better.

Although.. I'm going to have to post a pic to prove my point, aren't I... Which isn't going to happen. Nice chatting with you all. =P

Must... resist... urge... to say... "You go, girl"...

It's interesting to note that girls enjoy the social aspect of gaming. I have found the average gamer to be concerned many with quests and small petty victories like collecting all the glittery bits on a map or beating a boss on "super manly mode," not on enjoying a game to interact with others. Perhaps I just live in the male dominated land of gaming. It'd be interesting to compare what male and female gamers find most interesting about games though. Perhaps a future article... will... fading... YOU GO GIRL! AHHHHH! NOOOO!

Why so many people are surprised to find out that
hardcore gaming transcends gender, I'll never know.

This survey is not a good one, as a statistician i can say that they cannot possibly generalize these results to the entire population of gamers, only everquest players. also singe the people pulled were not random they cannot prove anything with these results. and lastly you cant really measure levels of hardcore, it is an idea and there is no "1337ometer" (patent pending) out there that we can use to measure just how hardcore somebody is. oh and MMORPGs? really? that is at least in my opinion, a core of a very squishy variety. just a way to spend way more money than you, well have probably, what with the gaming computer, then the game, en the monthly fees.

This article disappointed me I was hoping for it to basically say that there are girls that play just as many games just as much as I do, but instead I get told that in a test the female players of Everquest 2 average more hours than the male players. I find hard to say that they are Hardcore gamers just because they play Everquest 2 a lot. I mean who knows they might just be sitting in town areas or something talking with others.

Note I have not played Everquest 2 so I have nothing against it but I am not sure if it would be considered a Hardcore game, but I feel that this test should be based on many games not just one.

To be hardcore you have to achieve something in the game to compensate you for the time you spend. Using a game as a chat room or playing for social reasons as the article states is not hardcore. Otherwise I am incredibly hardcore at idlequest for my ability to leave it running while doing something else.

So women are hardcore gamers because a bunch of people on the internet claiming to be women play more Everquest 2 than men, and for "social reasons".

Being hardcore does not mean you waste more time in a game doing nothing than other people. My mom plays Sims 3 and Peggle more than most people; does that make her hardcore? No. To be hardcore, you need to play more than just 1 game, and you have to actually be good at it.

*ignoring the "commentary" and sticking to the topic* This study is simply not a good overall assessment of female to male gamer demographics period. It takes one online game (one with questionable relevancy as well), which people play for different reasons (social interaction, achievement, addiction, time-killer/boredom, escapism, need to be "the best"/mastery, competition, etc.), has an decently large sample size (7,000 people) but however fails to distinguish the ratio of male to female players, explore much in the way of other demographics/pyschographics/etc., their motivations for playing, how they spend and the results of their time, etc. to provide any really meaningful results. Plus they were volunteers who gave their own time estimates, which by their very nature tend to be inaccurate. Also, "hardcore" gamers (which in this context seems to simply mean people who spend an inordinately large amount of time playing game/s and do nothing else ever) tend to be the most vocal (and evidently hostile) demographic and are more likely to fill out opinion surveys to begin with, so you're not even sampling a broad spectrum of people within the gender division. The conclusions of the study itself are flawed when applied to the gaming universe as a whole and leave a whole section of the gaming world (females, both "hardcore" and in general) open to unnecessary attacks for a bad conclusion from an inaccurate study. (Plus, as has become evident from this thread, male players feel threatened by females being labeled "hardcore" and have sought to belittle or demean that title by suggesting they just play a lot but are stupid and "suck" at what they're doing which may be infact true for some gamers, both male and female, but is just simply wrong and insulting when applied to the entire gaming spectrum)

Besides helping to dispel long-cherished stereotypes that girls don't play video games or if they do they're "lame baby games and they suck and all they do is chat anyways and the Wii doesn't count because it's for girls and pussies and girls have...", gender demographics are important to the actual gaming industry in development and marketing games as their chief demographic is no longer "white suburban middle class male ages 14-25" and it hasn't been for a long time. honestly even in a basic computer game design course the first thing you look at after the history of the medium is the player: who they are, why they play, and what that means to you as a developer. (Game Development Essentials by Jeannie Novak is an excellent resource for all introductory aspects of game design and is actually written with game development students in mind so it's not only comprehensive but relevant to the current gaming world and is generally illuminating in it's own right)

That Science News has taken a bad study and used it to state something that's already been known for years just makes them look like they're out of the loop/behind with them times and therefore their opinion is irrelevant. Perhaps they should stick to you know... actual science. Or at least better, less biased/skewed studies about things we already know.

I don't care how good they are videogames... I just want to be able to play against them.
In the last 6 months, I haven't been able to join a match of ANY game that's had even one woman in it.
Maybe we should start an escapist group for the girl gamers? Surely I can't be the only one who is sick and tired of only playing with guys who just swear at you as soon as you disagree with something they say?
Where are all the females? I want to be able to have a civilized match that isn't a "matter of life and death".

Online we're unable to see who's gaming regardless. You bring up a good point though. I personally would just like to acquire a list of female gamers that are civilized, fun to talk to and most of all, would want to play against me. I rarely have the pleasure of versing a woman online in any videogame, and to be quite frank, I'm bored to death of logging onto Modern Warfare 2, LittleBIGplanet, Left4Dead 1-2 or Team Fortress 2 only to be berated by guys who have way too much time and testosterone combined with "little man syndrome".
I'm sick to death of it. I would kill to play against a female online. Please anybody, I need an intelligent, civilized opponent.

So you consider socializing a waste of time?

In any case, I think you are confusing playing a game primarily for social reasons, and playing a game purely for social reasons.

My mom plays Sims 3 and Peggle more than most people; does that make her hardcore? No.
Care to explain why not?

To be hardcore, you need to play more than just 1 game, and you have to actually be good at it.
So what about chess [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess]?

Chess grandmasters [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_(chess)] will have memorized the names of every opening, will be able to play simultaneous games [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_exhibition], and will be able to play blindfold [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindfold_chess].

And yet by your reasoning, unless these people play something else as well, they are not hardcore.
