I'm not sure if "hardcore" is the correct label for those who exhibit this kind of playing time difference, Mr Chalk. I noticed that the Scientific American did not put it that way, and with good reason. "Hardcore" is a concept not just measured by how much we play, but what games we choose to play. And frankly, MMORPGs are the kind of games that are played for "social reasons", and they are simply not the games that are conventionally considered "hardcore".
When we see a proper balance of women to men playing very realistic FPS games like Counter Strike: Source and insane retro games like I Wanna Be The Guy or Power Strike, THEN we can start celebrating equality or women's empowerment. Until then, things are going to look a little premature. After all, it is the acculturation of women to value different things from men (an influence that is really a remnant from their days of oppression) that leads to their playing for "social reasons" over concepts like achievement.
However, it is an excellent idea to shake up the ancient proclamation that there are no women on the Internet. That looked stupid when it was first popularised, and now it looks like a dinosaur driving a car. So, I hope we see more news regarding research which contradicts typical assumptions.

Since when did this become a feminist argument?
*shakes head* Trolls..

Hum, I'd like to see a survey of more than just one game, and also where people are from, as that may have a large impact on results. Out of 4 female gamers I know, only one of them is a hardcore gamer, two of them (including the hardcore gamer) aren't socially normal, and the other two are are pretty good looking (just to break the sterotype).

It's nice to know that the second a stereotypically 'unattractive' female gamer is put up everyone yells and screams in horror whether they themselves are the pinnacle of sexy or otherwise. Here's the deal. We're not in gaming to be your eye candy and you have no right to flame us, troll us or otherwise just because we're females, attractive or otherwise. How the fuck would you feel to have a bunch of people saying shit like that about you?
Grow up and be a little more considerate.
If I was a female gamer, I'd just have to consider the irony that the average male gamer (in my experience) is over weight, unattractive and socially inept. So for a bunch of potentially sweaty fat-balls to be joking over female gamers, got to see the humour in that.
o.0 Overweight? What nerds do you know? All the ones I know (including myself) can't put on weight if we try. And I have. =P We're more the type that can game all day and eat nothing but junk, then look better than someone who goes to the gym every morning. Irony.. It's awesome. On the plus side, we always fit into a suit.

Here's a thought, it's weird, but it might work. How about, who cares? Whether you're a guy or girl, it doesn't really matter. If you're on my team, what matters is if you can play and keep any trolling comments to yourself. Also if you're fun to play with, that's probably first.. Sex really doesn't come into it. It's only an issue if you want it to be.
Unfortunately, sex and sexual preference seem to be topics that people just can't get by without proclaiming to the world. Forgetting that those of us who can actually play, really don't give a ****. Don't go on about how you're a girl empowering women everywhere, don't post pix of yourself, don't make a fuss when some rtard demonstrates exactly why girls don't game openly after you've posted pix. =P
Although I find that they usually quit if you can beat them convincingly several times. But again, why? Sooooo not worth the effort or annoyance to the rest of us.
Especially considering the amount of immature guys on the net means you'll be doing that constantly..
