That's rather suprising.

Rejoice nerds of the world. There's plenty of woman out there that may want you!
They didn't say there were a lot, just that they were even more obsessed with the game than the guys were, you still have no hope. =P

On topic, it makes sense and it didn't need a survey on an old game to show it. Girls are overall, more social creatures, specifically, socialising with those of the opposite sex. If they decide they want to game instead, they lose everything "normal", so to speak. Since they look really bad to their peers, they lose themselves in the game even more, creating what we gamers like to call, *insert unintelligible gibbering here*

I don't see your logic, sorry.
MMOs are just a step under a first person shooters on the casual gaming scale.
Ah, nothing like artificial divisions to make someone feel important.
especially when you've blatantly pulled them out of your arse, exactly what makes an MMORPG any less "hardcore" than any other genre?

I'm not sure if "hardcore" is the correct label for those who exhibit this kind of playing time difference, Mr Chalk. I noticed that the Scientific American did not put it that way, and with good reason. "Hardcore" is a concept not just measured by how much we play, but what games we choose to play. And frankly, MMORPGs are the kind of games that are played for "social reasons", and they are simply not the games that are conventionally considered "hardcore".

When we see a proper balance of women to men playing very realistic FPS games like Counter Strike: Source and insane retro games like I Wanna Be The Guy or Power Strike, THEN we can start celebrating equality or women's empowerment. Until then, things are going to look a little premature. After all, it is the acculturation of women to value different things from men (an influence that is really a remnant from their days of oppression) that leads to their playing for "social reasons" over concepts like achievement.

However, it is an excellent idea to shake up the ancient proclamation that there are no women on the Internet. That looked stupid when it was first popularised, and now it looks like a dinosaur driving a car. So, I hope we see more news regarding research which contradicts typical assumptions.

Since when did this become a feminist argument?

Hum, I'd like to see a survey of more than just one game, and also where people are from, as that may have a large impact on results. Out of 4 female gamers I know, only one of them is a hardcore gamer, two of them (including the hardcore gamer) aren't socially normal, and the other two are are pretty good looking (just to break the sterotype).

It's nice to know that the second a stereotypically 'unattractive' female gamer is put up everyone yells and screams in horror whether they themselves are the pinnacle of sexy or otherwise. Here's the deal. We're not in gaming to be your eye candy and you have no right to flame us, troll us or otherwise just because we're females, attractive or otherwise. How the fuck would you feel to have a bunch of people saying shit like that about you?

Grow up and be a little more considerate.
If I was a female gamer, I'd just have to consider the irony that the average male gamer (in my experience) is over weight, unattractive and socially inept. So for a bunch of potentially sweaty fat-balls to be joking over female gamers, got to see the humour in that.
o.0 Overweight? What nerds do you know? All the ones I know (including myself) can't put on weight if we try. And I have. =P We're more the type that can game all day and eat nothing but junk, then look better than someone who goes to the gym every morning. Irony.. It's awesome. On the plus side, we always fit into a suit. :D

Here's a thought, it's weird, but it might work. How about, who cares? Whether you're a guy or girl, it doesn't really matter. If you're on my team, what matters is if you can play and keep any trolling comments to yourself. Also if you're fun to play with, that's probably first.. Sex really doesn't come into it. It's only an issue if you want it to be.

Unfortunately, sex and sexual preference seem to be topics that people just can't get by without proclaiming to the world. Forgetting that those of us who can actually play, really don't give a ****. Don't go on about how you're a girl empowering women everywhere, don't post pix of yourself, don't make a fuss when some rtard demonstrates exactly why girls don't game openly after you've posted pix. =P

Although I find that they usually quit if you can beat them convincingly several times. But again, why? Sooooo not worth the effort or annoyance to the rest of us.
Especially considering the amount of immature guys on the net means you'll be doing that constantly..

What the hell? I AM A GIRL GAMER. And no, I'm not Angelina Jolie/Halle Berry material, but I'm healthy and hygienic and that image is most certainly not and as a result disgusts me. So, no I will not be "considerate" of someone else's inability to look after themselves properly.

On a petty note, grow up? I'm sixteen - I'll get round to that in my own time, thanks.

Women take everything serious, amirite?

To be honest though I never see girls on XBL, maybe 2 on Gears and one on SF4.

In this day and age you'd have thought everyone would have realised that there are no girls on the internet.

This has been proven and disproven many times.
I wouldn't doubt that many women play said games. In my WoW days my guild leader was a succesful female player, and many members of said guild were female as well.
But as I have not yet met one of these fabled harcored female players, it still seems like a bit of a fairytale for me.
Ohh, the life of a gamer is a lonely one.

They did a poll on 7000 ppl.
Id like to see somethign like a poll on 5,000,000 of world of warcraft`s players. That could give alot beter image on the how hardcore ghirls are. I hate when they do surveys with bunch of ppl and then put us all under their mark -_-`

How many times have u hit the gym mate? You go in a gym go to the locker room and sit on a chair for 3 hours and just look the guys change their outfits. Tell me if u look ANYTHING like them. The fact that ur not fat doesnt mean if u take your shirt off you gona turn the girls heads.

Shouldn't the real issue be that we're going out of our way to make a big deal over female gamers, rather than just accepting the fact that a phallus isn't required to enjoy games or take them seriously?

Every time I see a big deal made over female gamers, I liken it to seeing an advertisement proudly broadcasting that a fictional university in a predominantly white state now has more than zero black people. You could either integrate and accept people, or you can make a big goddamn deal out of it and single them out as being forever different and sending the message that they're not equal to the people already there.

It's a fact of human life and nature to find another person attractie or unattractive, shutting it off is impossible. Even though voicing it may be a little inconsiderate, it has nothing to do with ones maturity level. Boys especially are always going to be looking for what they find attractive in a female no matter if she's a gamer or not, it isn't meant to piss you off or de-humanize you, it's just the natural order of things...accept it. Guys are in a constant state of arousal all the time, not full on, but they are always in the mode. Why do you think that happily married men will still turn their heads if a good looking woman walks by? They can't help it, and no amount of wishing or bashing on them will change that.... ever.

Excuse me, I'm not trolling, I'm seriously considering the argument from the way the article was written. The joke about "giving them the vote" at the end, and the idea of being "more hardcore" as addressed in the headline and bolded first line, each suggest a success for feminism in gaming, and the evolution of female gamers from casual to hardcore (which is presumably meant to be considered a positive thing). But it is too early to celebrate that, which is what I'm pointing out.

I know someone's going to give me shit for saying this, but, Everquest is not a real game. It's just another crappy WoW wannabee.

While you are partially correct (most guys are horny bastards, me included), that doesn't mean you have to be a jerk about it. There is a big difference between having thoughts, and acting on them.

I guess it's like my dad always says: We should've seen this coming when we let them have the vote.

And just like my high school history teacher said: "I just find it interesting that shortly after women got the right to vote, the Great Depression happened."
