Generally? Nah

I've both been bullied and been a bully. What they fail to understand is that both sides have that problem, that's what causes it. The only difference to which side you're on is the strength and popularity. This years victim is next years bully.

Used to get beat up every day for scoring highest in tests.

Stopped trying and just lazy all day now, what do you know! I'm pretty friendly with everyone now, everyone at my college greets me etc. Sense.

I got bullied in school and that is only one side of the coin. Now a studied need to be done to get into the mind of a bully.

I'm a nerd, but I got bullied because of racial intolerance toward my bloodlines and being smarter then the bullies and got publically praised for it by my teachers. I became anti-social because of the childhood I've had.

At least 10% of school-age kids will experience some form of bullying during their lifetime
Bullplop! That number is a lot higher! I'm sorry but I know that number was either made up on the spot or the data got fudged.
Because your experiences during 3rd grade is SO a statistical basis

Yeah i'm not the greatest at that. And have they considered it is also maybe a fact that the bully picks who is the nerd not the nerd, so whoever is funnest to pick on in this instance becomes a nerd. And that made no sense. What are we defining nerd as anyway???

And 10% does seem much too low, i'm guessing thats the amount of kids that admit they were bullied. Damn kids, they are so mean.

I'd just like to point out that the image accompanying this article is of Jimmy beating up a member of the Prep clique, not the Nerd clique. Just thought it'd be interesting to know.

As a former victim of bullying, it's most often a problem on the end of the aggressor. I was bullied cause unlike other girls in my elementary school, I'd rather play video games or read a book all day. I was once beat up by a 4th grader while I was in the second grade cause I bumped into him. Let me just tell you I didn't stay a victim for long...I learned to whoop some major ass by the time I was 11. But the bullying caused me to become a shut-in at some point...I didn't have a real friend until Junior High and every time I went outside, I checked to make sure no one was following me. It took almost 5 years, but I've stopped looking over my shoulder every five seconds, I don't flip when someone touches me, I can keep my anger at a healthy level and not rip someone's head off, and I'm not afraid to go to school anymore.

But yeah, the 10% is bull, it's much higher, but not all victims come forward and seek out about it and it's a real problem. In my old town, teachers just sat to one side and let it happen. Hell, sometime teachers joined in on it!

So maybe it's time to stop looking at the victim and look closer at the aggressor, cause 99% of the time, that's where you problem lies.

Like I don't know but growing up I found out that they won't bully you if you stand up for yourself and beat the crap out of them... Well at least it worked for me haha those fuckers stopped punching me after I broke they're noses and mouths, anyway I would only solve problems with violence when they attempted violence first if it was just words I would just ignore them and dwell in my mind like I always do I seem to get distracted by everything sometimes I just stare at the wall instead of paying attention to people.
Reacting with serious violence whould cause getting you kicked from the school. If you defended against the "wrong person" (I dont want to point at imigrants now, but...), you might even get stabed in the back later by some ones criminal big brother or cousin.
It all happened.

I only punched people who deserved it besides I had good grades and was fairly calm most of the time but one time a teacher hit me with a meter and I punched him in the balls it was funny because he dragged me (litterally) all the way from one side of the school to the principal's office and they did nothing about it, besides the guys that I broke they're mouths and noses thre me off the stairs so I assure you they were the ones that got it because they could have killed me.

I know at my school we bullied pricks (the self-righteous ones were particularly fun to emotionally destroy) and people who didn't stick up for themselves, but for those people it was to goad them into reacting and learning the benefit of a backbone (honestly, it sounds like crap but its true. It would happen among groups of friends, who would usually make sure they were the only one's who did it and provided a strong support against outside attackers). At least in my year.

There was also a sort of karmic belief in my year. Everyone got along. The 'meatheads' (for want of better words) were kind and pleasant with the 'nerds' and 'intelligents' in the belief that they would one day be employed by such people, and the nerds returned the favour with understanding and even tutoring. It was a good system.

I'd say people get bullied because people are mostly stupid as well as assholes. I kinda feel like news at 11 on this article. There isn't a justification for bullying.
At first I thought you meant the victim was stupid and an a#se hole, then i re-read and realised you meant the bully was.

Pfft. Everyone knows kids don't have feelings.
I honestly don't the sarcasm is needed. Young kids are bastards.

Bullies have nothing better to do, it's not a failure to read body signals. And they have nothing better to do because they're idiots and refuse to learn.

Schools don't allow for those who are bullied to stand up for themselves either, they are punished for defending themselves if they decide to throw a punch back or something. School is about preparing kids for the real world, but in the real world, it's called "harassment" and "physical assault"; actionable crime, but in school you're told "not to be a pussy" about it. I never did get beaten up, but I fet for the ones who were.

schools don't really know how to punish bullying either. I was in school during columbine and all the other copycat shootings, and that was a baaaaaad time for someone to be a quiet nerd. Instead of going at the root of the problem, schools treated anyone nerdy or quiet like a nutcase about to snap. Suspending kids for having dyed hair, writing dark stories for english class, and sending them to a school psychiatrist.

Hmm I disagree with that, I'm a nerd and I have an incredible capacity to guess what other people are thinking/feeling just by their physical expression and tone of voice.

I think the study pins on some key ideas but it fils to take in more social factors which occur on the playground and in class.

Also...it fails to take into account that some people, even as children, are just jerks.

It's true, I was antisocial & I do not make facial expressions or use body language when I talk to people. I also get pissed off when people who are talking to me move their hands. BUT, when I was in elementry school, I was a bully, & I didn't descriminate who I beat on either. Then I went into therapy for 3 years & they pumped me full of medication. 10 years latter, I have absolutely no adrenaline, no ambition, & the only emotions I have are "ammused," "irritated." & "bored." In hindsight, the medication was a really bad idea.

So, were any other nerds here the bullies instead of the bullied?
