On my highschool, smoking wasn't allowed on school grounds. So everyone took 1 step outside of the fence and smoked. Pretty damn stupid if you ask me.
Ever heard of "Passive Smoking"? I think that's the real reason for this "stupid" ban, personally I gag whenever I inhale cigarette smoke, I doubt I'm the only one who finds it utterly disgusting.
Yet you find cats smoking cool?
ZING!
I can't stand cigarette either but I didn't have a problem with second hand smoke.
Zing? Oh dear lord no he called out my shooped avatar! THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!

I don't find any form of smoking "cool", but I don't care if someone else wants to do it as long as they don't do it in my face (And a cat with a pipe and a hat is just classy).

In a few weeks, smoking in bars will be banned in Belgium (you can still make a tiny, tiny part of your bar a smoking zone, but anyway), the thing is, they also put a ban on hookahs, you know, waterpipes. I'm a non-smoker myself, even better, I have asthma but this is just ridiculous. They banned smoking in bars for a few reasons including: It's bad for your health and it's bothersome for the non-smokers in said bars. But hookahs aren't bad for your health, and since they are only used in special bars exclusively for the purpose of being able to smoke one, it's no bother to other people. I just don't get it.

No. It is illegal to sell incandescent light bulbs.
Owning them is fine. If you have some in your house nobody is going to charge you with a crime.

And they were taken off the market for a very good reason. Energy efficiency and cutting of greenhouse gases.

Not really, thats just so the school can wash their hands of the smokers, and if anyone complains they can just point out it didn't happen on school grounds.

Anyway, Pokemon cards. They were pure and innocent, and yet they banned 'em!
Agreed, did the same with YuGiOh as well because it was "too complex for the younger children". Don't let them play it then... it's like banning a whole ride in a theme park because one pissed off kid is too small for the height limit >.>

Yeah, well I guess that fits with the general trend. The UK laws on child porn ban anything that looks like it could depict someone under 18.

Never mind that 18 is not a meaningful line in terms of a person's appearance... (Or that the art style of anime in general makes everyone look much younger too)

You can't meaningfully tell a person's age in the range of 16-30 just by looking at them... >_<

Ah yes cards...
If the explanation that they got kids hooked on consumerism/useless spending of money/fanatical display of affection of a brand never worked, there was always the explanation of stealing due to obsession. Problem is half the kids in my year didn't know about stealing when they banned the cards. Let me tell you the influx of missing pencils and rubbers after there was a talk about stealing in response to the ban was no mystery.

Also there almost was a Blackberry service ban where I lived but it was apparently for a good reason... they wanted to monitor and censor your messages within and outside the country incase you were saying stuff about it but the company that owns BB wouldn't let them soooo that is why they wanted a ban. But literally 2 days before the ban was meant to be put into effect, they changed their minds and stated they were to cool to ban the BB service. The ban wasn't going to affect me in any way as I don't own a BB but I still replied with a *sarcastic* "wth? There goes all my taunting fun..." */sarcastic*.

Not exactly banned, but just imagine because of some new stupid governmental ploy, your local cinema will NOT be playing anymore movies from Hollywood or any other countries. This includes missing out on ?Black Swan,? ?True Grit,? and ?127 Hours,?. In exchange, they will only show shitty films, for example : "Rinsing Nurse" or "Dashing Nurse" or a CRASS RIPOFF of One Missed Call. As for the other two nurse titles, they are "Horror" movies which is actually kind of pseudo-porn.

Oh and this is last month.

This, as it's pretty serious. Australia is easily the most right wing, fascistic country in the west, but this is damn ridiculous.
Well fuck you with a rusty ice pick you ignorant little **** why don?t you look up what real fascism is before you accuse my country of it.

Hmm, Wikipedia definition time...
Fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems, including the political system and the economy. They advocate the creation of a totalitarian single-party state that seeks the mass mobilization of a nation and the creation of an ideal "new man" to form a governing elite through indoctrination, physical education, and family policy including eugenics. Fascists believe that a nation requires strong leadership, singular collective identity, and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong. Fascist governments forbid and suppress opposition to the state.
...
Fascists exalt violence, war, and militarism as providing positive transformation in society, in providing spiritual renovation, education, instilling of a will to dominate in people's character, and creating national comradeship through the military service. Fascists view violence and war as actions that create national regeneration, spirit and vitality.

Fascism is anti-communist, anti-democratic, anti-individualist, anti-liberal, anti-parliamentary, anti-conservative, anti-bourgeois and anti-proletarian, and in many cases anti-capitalist. Fascism rejects the concepts of egalitarianism, materialism, and rationalism in favour of action, discipline, hierarchy, spirit, and will. In economics, fascists oppose liberalism (as a bourgeois movement) and Marxism (as a proletarian movement) for being exclusive economic class-based movements. Fascists present their ideology as that of an economically trans-class movement that promotes resolving economic class conflict to secure national solidarity. They support a regulated, multi-class, integrated national economic system.

If you CBA to read all of that, concentrate on the bold sections. It really doesn't sound like Australia. Unless Australia secretly has a one party system. But that strangely seems unlikely.

OT: Well, our school has banned anything which can be decribed as having a 'blade' or sharpenable edge to make a blade (apart from scissors). This means that metal rulers are not allowed and neither are those little knives that (I believe) Sikhs carry. Umm, You can't bring in any kind of cutlery except spoons and (more recently) plastic sporks.

Yeah, no electronics in school between 0840 and 1540, but one teacher still lets us use iPods when we're doing a lot of note taking (i.e. copying out Verbatim) from the History text book.

Oh shut up. I?m sick of people bashing my country is it so wrong that wanted to dispel a rumor?
Of course its not wrong correcting a rumour. But the UK gets ripped all the time , be that in TV shows, on the internet or whatever. Just get over it and move the fuck on. It's not like you personally represent the whole of Australia. Instead just watch all the ignorant fools look stupid while they assume its true coz' one guy said it on the internet.

The stupidest i can think of is when china banned football manager 05' for portraying Tibet as a country. China does a lot of stupid stuff but cmon'!
Ummmm, it's kind of a police state that doesn't acknowledge the existence of Tibet. Fascist, yes, stupid, no.
The term you are looking for is dictatorship, fascist is a right wing concept. China are a communist country, in other words on the opposite end of the political spectrum (left wing)

Wow I was going to mention paintball guns in Germany, but They've been outdone. By small tits. Seriously Australia? you banned flat chest? tiny tata's? mini boobs, fun sized fun bags, mosquito bites, [I'll let everyone else fill in the small boobs euphemisms themselves I wonder how many the escapist can think of] all because they supposedly make a woman look like a little kid? that's just retarded.
I will settle this this once and for all NO. WE. DIDN?T. The small breast thing was just a stupid rumor but of course none of you idiots bothered to look beyond some sensationalist news story.

Agreed with this. Oh no, some people have an increased chance of imagining something illegal is going on, must put a stop to this at once!

That is so very close to thought policing. It's a whole 'if we can pretend it's illegal, it's made illegal' mentality, which is frightening and absurd, yet real.

Homosexuality.

Ethnic minorities.

Abortion.

Freedom Of Speech.

Artistic Expression.

The list goes on. Take your pick. It's stupid to ban anything, we've banned drugs, are there no drugs now? We ban people from speaking their mind, does everybody conform?

The entire concept of banning something just because it offends your feeble sensibilities of "right" and "wrong" is immoral and unjustified, just because you don't agree with someone does not mean that they shouldn't have the freedom to do it as long as it does not harm others.
