Lately I've been rocking out to Them Crooked Vultures' self titled debut and I started looking through my music library just to see what other "super groups" I had kicking around. Now, when I say "super group" I don't simply mean a band that is comprised of guys who have all been in bands before, but they must have all been in successful bands that have gotten some actual press or are considered influential beyond a short blurb on some underground website devoted to black metal or something. Here's just a few of them and the bands the members were in:

Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (Primus, Buckethead, Parliament Funkadelic)
Fantomas (Faith No More, Slayer, Melvins)
The Jelly Jam (Dream Theater, King's X, Dixie Dregs)
Liquid Tension Experiment (Dream Theater, Dixie Dregs)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (NOFX, Lagwagon, etc.)
Oysterhead (Primus, Phish, The Police)
Them Crooked Vultures (Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters/Nirvana, Led Zepplin)

Generally I don't find so-called super groups very impressive, but these few have stuck around my collection for a while. What do you guys, oh mighty Escapians, generally think about big stars collaborating with other big stars? Do they actually make good music or is it just an excuse for artists to indulge themselves and make a few bucks based on their reputation alone?

Liquid Tension Experiment is just Dream Theater with a different bass player and no vocalist.

I vote for Northern Kings, with all the Finnish power metal blokes. Like Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica and Marco Hietala from Nightwish, among others.

Isles & Glaciers. (Emarosa, Cinematic Sunrise, The Receiving End of Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Underminded, & former members of Chiodos, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Dance Gavin Dance, Boys Night Out, and Fordirelifesake)

Considering the only supergroup I listen to is Isles & Glaciers, my opinion is that if the members put their skills together effectively and do so in a way that made everyone like their original bands in the first place, then more power to them. I don't just like Isles & Glaciers because they've got members of a couple of my favourite bands in them, (despite that being what attracted my attention) I like them because they make genuinely good music. So I don't really think it's an excuse for them to indulge themselves and make a few bucks.

Any supergroup that did do that would not be getting my money because it would be likely that the quality of music they produced would suffer a bit in favour of getting word out that they have THIS GUY FROM THIS BAND AND THAT GUY FROM THAT BAND IN THE ONE BAND.

At the time they wrote/improvised the albums Jordan Rudess was not part of Dream Theater and neither was Tony Levin (though he's not now either). Rudess did join the band after the LTE project though.

Fantomas is the only one I listen to. Supergroups are just commercial gimmicks. All good bands need a leader.

Well, there's Cream. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were both pretty big on the scene in Britain in the 60s, and Clapton, of course, was considered God back then. Then Clapton and Baker were together for Blind Faith with Steve Winwood of Traffic.

There's Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (The Byrds, The Hollies, Buffalo Springfield).

Traveling Wilburys (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, ELO, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison)

The Firm (Led Zeppelin, Free/Bad Company, Uriah Heep/Manfred Mann)

I thought Them Crooked Vultures made an album that was both bland, and generic, in equal parts.

Don't get me wrong, I love Josh Homme and QoTSA, Kyuss and Desert Sessions... But they really badly need a guitarist who can kick out some decent riffs. The latest works seem to have stagnated creatively to a sort of grungy sound, but nothing spectacular or remarkable.

That's the only super group I know, and I don't like it.

I find the concept of Super Groups to be very interesting in terms of what they bring out. I won't bother posting any of my favourites, they'll just be met with scorn. ;)

I clicked on this thread believing that it was a discussion of the Justice League's lesser known compatriots.

Well, I best be saddlin' up, then.

Hellyeah's the only one I know of.

That's considered a super group right?
Hellyeah? Vinnie from Pantera with guys from Mudvayne and Nothingface, right? They are, but kind of in a bottom of the bin sort of way, as none of these groups are really that relevant any more. Pantera has had a big influence, but having the drummer from said band is hardly a big deal, in my book anyway. I do like Mudvayne's first two albums and I have like one Nothingface album, which was surprisingly good, but the combined efforts just came across as a desperate attempt for more money.

I did find Josh's playing rather...samey compared to some of the QotSA material recently, but I really like Grohl and Jones on the album. I'm more of a rhythm section guy, I guess.

Never heard of Nothingface.

I do like a bit of Pantera and Mudvayne's album Lost and Found was pretty good.

I do like Hellyeah a bit though and saw them twice when they opened for KoRn.
