Lately I've been rocking out to Them Crooked Vultures' self titled debut and I started looking through my music library just to see what other "super groups" I had kicking around. Now, when I say "super group" I don't simply mean a band that is comprised of guys who have all been in bands before, but they must have all been in successful bands that have gotten some actual press or are considered influential beyond a short blurb on some underground website devoted to black metal or something. Here's just a few of them and the bands the members were in:
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (Primus, Buckethead, Parliament Funkadelic)
Fantomas (Faith No More, Slayer, Melvins)
The Jelly Jam (Dream Theater, King's X, Dixie Dregs)
Liquid Tension Experiment (Dream Theater, Dixie Dregs)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (NOFX, Lagwagon, etc.)
Oysterhead (Primus, Phish, The Police)
Them Crooked Vultures (Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters/Nirvana, Led Zepplin)
Generally I don't find so-called super groups very impressive, but these few have stuck around my collection for a while. What do you guys, oh mighty Escapians, generally think about big stars collaborating with other big stars? Do they actually make good music or is it just an excuse for artists to indulge themselves and make a few bucks based on their reputation alone?
