"Overplayed" the Lois & Clark romance? You married her off to cyclops and gave her a latchkey brat with an inhaler, sir. If that's staying true to the comic roots, then I'm off to Hollywood to pitch my Batman reboot wherein Thomas and Martha Wayne enact a murder-suicide pact to ensure their son is motivated to become a vigilante, as outlined in Thomas' secret red leather journal...

He did remake the original Donner film! it was pretty much a checklist exercise hitting the highlights of the original vastly superior film.

It's kind of a shame, because it ruined Brandon Routh's chance and I thought he was pretty damn good in the role.
Agreed on both counts. Singer did so much to ape Donner's film he practically remade it (and yes, added some weird stuff like the kid and the love triangle). And Routh unfairly paid the price, even though he played the role pretty well, all things considered (there's only so much an actor can do with a crap script, after all).

More action would be nice. But how about a coherent narrative? You left the earth undefended for two years, and flew a giant piece of space junk back to your childhood home, for what? To never ever mention it again?

I would love to see a movie exploring Superman's relationship to his job as a journalist and how his powers influence his vocation.

Like the repercussion of his deciding to expose corruption around the world (including and especially in the U.S.), while conceiling his identity in a convincing manner.

Also, someone just got to have the guts to depower him a bit, because invincible characters are very hard to write in an interesting way. Unless you're a crazy/genious hirsute english man.

I'm not much of a Super-fan but that movie really didn't do much for me.

I dig DC animated stuff though, it must be all the battles with giant space robots and supernatural ninja monsters.

And if this new movie begins with an origin story AGAIN...
Between those Reeves movies and 'Smallville' I think half of North Americans could probably describe to you the setup for Superman.

GodDAMN was that business with his son stupid. "Now that you're knocked up, I'm going to jet off to another planet and leave you to raise the child with a much better guy than me, who thinks the child is his!" Our hero, ladies and gentlemen! And apparently I haven't caught on to the fact that Lex Luthor wouldn't even jaywalk without a piece of Kryptonite! I was shown this movie at church because of its Christian imagery, and I made sure to point out that it was all undermined by the fact that this incarnation of Superman is completely unlikeable!

But I LIKE this version of superman. I watched it at the premiere screening with my friends, and everyone other than me seemed to hate it. But I like seeing a Superman movie where you get to explore his thoughts rather than his actions for once. Every other heroes movies are all about what they do, not what they think (other than say, Spiderman..which people seems to hate as well).
Maybe I'm just weird that way..
I think one key problem is most people expect Superman to punch things more often. I've always prefered the stories where he's forced to confront his limits. Being strong and fast can't make someone love you, or bring your life back into check. I think that's what Singer managed to show in that movie, that the worlds most awesome hero is still "human".
Did they ever play the Superman song by Foo Fighters in the movie? I really thought that the movie must have been influenced really heavily by that song.
My only real problem with the movie was when Lex stabbed Supey with the Kryptonite shard. That felt weird... but I really like every other part of the story, especially Lex and his men and their dry humor. They were not quite subtle, but not jarring either.

Here's an idea Mr. Singer: next time you want to do a movie about Superman, give him a villain with whom he stands on equal footing. A short list includes:

DARKSIED

General Zod (wisely chosen for 'Man of Steel')

Mongol

Lobo

I think the problem was that Superman was a creepy stalker douchebag in the movie who didn't deserve to "win" over the other guy who in fact was both a better person and far more heroic.

Also
I may be remembering this wrong, but I thought Superman was supposed to be a genius, yet he doesn't see anything suspicious in an island made out of green crystal. You'd think he'd get tingles when he started getting close.
Actually, with regards to the comics at least, Kal-el's kind of a dipstick. That's why Bruce/Batman doesn't hang out with him anymore; something bad would happen, Superman would go charging in fists first and fall into supervillain's trap, Batman would have to be the cavalry and bail him out. Bruce finally threw up his hands at one point and said 'You want to think with your fists, fine. Do it alone.'

Don't get me wrong, Superman's not an idiot by any means, but he's too complacent in his invulnerability and as such doesn't tend to look before he leaps. So, not stupid, but not incredibly smart either.

For the record, I knew he was making a mistake when he chose to leave doing X-Men 3 to do Superman Returns. You never leave a brass ring.

It's not that he is dumb or anything, he frequently works with alien tech and deduces things that are going on, the only reason he gets caught unaware sometimes or is perceived to be thinking with his fists is that he comes to rely on his powers and likes to use his tried and true methods for a quick ending.

Imagine being trained and equipped with guns, bombs, jetpack, and consistently fighting people who don't plan to encounter you, you would have a certain plan heading into situations, problem is you occasionally run across someone who is also trained and has equipment, or your equipment stops working at the wrong time. And if Superman approached every situation with the thought line "well what if they have a..." it would slow down his reactions, and more innocent bystanders would get hurt.

And Batman has never done that. There is a thought bubble quote by Batman that says, "When I look at Clark I see an unstoppable force for good, and I'll be damned if I let him fall before I do." prior to him joining Superman in battle against a Throng of villains in Superman/Batman vol.1

LOL The movie was decent in parts but there were just some really bad parts too.

Like the whole shuttle/plane part. Why would the press ride IN THE PLANE? And why does Lois get knocked around the plane and not have ONE SCRATCH? XD

And they REALLY overplay the possible death at the end. It goes on FOREVER, and you know he's not going to die, so it's just a huge waste of time.

Just as in Austin Powers, when the good guy is on screen - it's a boring ego-centric whine.

The "film physics" are atrocious, and it only touches on being good when the villain is strutting.

I thought Superman Returns rocked, they could have gotten someone else for Louis Lane but besides that it was funny, epic and cool. I'm still waiting for the sequel.

Exactly! It was all an elaborate scheme to destroy Routh for leaving the X-Men!

Off Topic: There is a Duke Nukem Forever add on the bottom of my screen!

The problem wasn't the stabbing or some romance. The problem is that for two hours nothing happened. Just for fun I did watch the old Superman movies he likes so much again and while you can't help but cringe at how cheesy they are these days there is one thing they are not: boring.
Stuff happens, lots of it. All the time. Usually involvling Superman hitting something.

Superman movies have always had problems, this god like being flying around pretty much watching over a city he has to patch up here and now, the only time they get interesting is when another being as strong if not stronger put his man o steel name to the test

Horrible movie, one of the worst of all time. Right down there with Elektra and Hensleigh's Punisher. Singer *should* be ashamed of it.
