Among other, lesser procedures (those pilonidal cysts are indeed stubborn buggers), I've had a hernia repaired. According to my family, it was a harrowing experience, all screaming and thrashing once the dope wore off. All I remember is counting backwards from ten in the OR, then lying on the couch at home playing FF7.

I was born with club feet, so I underwent corrective surgery for that as an infant, actually pretty damn thankful I can walk normally and without any complications. That's it though, no other surgeries.

My appendectomy was poorly done, so I'll not discuss that experience except to say that it's pretty bad when you show up to other doctor's and they want to know who "attacked" you when they see the scar the bastard left.

My spinal surgery was a far "better" experience, despite having bone/disc/tendon removed I was up and walking a few hours after the surgery. Well, I wouldn't call it walking but I was up and around.

Anesthesia is ***** for me.. Everyone responds differently, so don't take my experience as 'common'. I get violently ill.I require alot of anti-emetics to get through the first couple of days. Generally speaking I can't eat for several days after surgery. After the appendectomy I had to wait 6 days to even drink water, it was that bad. But after the spinal surgery, thanks to them providing me anti-emetics, I was able to eat within one or two days of the surgery.

I've had one surgery. No, I won't say what the surgery was for. It's kinda private, embarrassing, and much much worse than a tonsillectomy. But if you really must know, then I might say what my surgery was.
I need to know.

You asked for it.

When I was 9 or so, I started peeing blood. So my mom took me to the hospital, and they scheduled a surgery. They put me under, and they stuck a tiny camera down my penis. Turns out there was a tiny cut in my urethra, so every time I took a leak, the urine would hit the cut, forcing blood out. They fixed the cut and I went home the next day. For about 2 weeks after, it burned like hell when I peed.

I've had 2 surgeries done on my right hand for 2 boxer fractures. The first time I broke my little finger metacarpal, I had to have pins put in. The second time I had to have a titanium plate screwed on the bone. I was put under both times, and both times I woke up feeling like I want to throw up. The first time I managed to kick the feeling to the curb, but the second time I did throw up.

If you're being put under, try not to eat or drink anything prior to surgery.

Edit: Edit: I also had a tonsillectomy, but I don't remember a single detail about it. I don't even remembering having it done.

Just a little pro tip: If you're put under and wake up to find a hot nurse standing next to you, for the love of all that is decent LOOK AWAY! Because the anesthetic makes you so loopy after waking up, you'll just embarrass yourself laying there with a derp face and a boner. >_>"

i 2nd the warning about coming round and making a fool of yourself, i was apparently suggesting to all the nurses id be able to take care of them all if they wanted to come back with me, i was wearing the gown with no rear and undoubtedly making advances to middle aged women whos children i could easily have been friends with. i remember none of this im just glad my mother had come with me not my girlfriend as it could only have been worse having the nurses tell my gf i was a bit of a letch rather than my mother. my mother embarrassed is worse than an argument with y gf

The only surgeries I've had were to remove my wisdom teeth and to remove a pilonidal cyst (I highly recommend NOT looking that up, BTW). I walked out of them the same day. No one keeps me in a hospital overnight.
Wow, another human being on the planet who had that? My doctor kept telling me it was common but I didn't believe him.

Well, I have my tonsils removed as a young age, and in my teens I had my wisdom teeth removed.
I guess as I can really say is stay calm, enjoy the anesthetic, and do what the doctors say for the aftercare and you'll be fine. If you have problems, see a doctor as well.

I hope all goes well for you as well, and no worries, I'll be in your shoes in a way soon too; many surgeries will be coming up for me sometime.

after my jaw locked up while I was sleeping a year or two ago I eventually(after alot of pain which resulted in me almost biting a dumbass docs thumbs off and an overnight stay at the Hospital) wound up getting the problem surgically fixed and having wires wrapped around my teeth. The surgery itself wound up being nothing to worry about though I'll admit was very nervous prior. But one thing that helped me mentally (and to my good fortune literally) was finding something to laugh at which resulted in a less problematic solution being implemented

I JUST had knee surgery a few days ago. I tore a crapload of cartilidge in my knee doing squat in a powerlifting competition. It wasnt that bad except i walked around with it for about 2 months and it just destroyed my knee. Surgery was not bad, but the only part i hated was getting the shots, those suck.

Maybe it is... I don't know, but I remember most, if not all of the surgery pretty clearly. I... won't go into details, for risk of making OP unnecessarily nervous. I live in Canada though, maybe that's different.
I don't know the facts around your situations but that doesn't sound normal. I was on an ENT rotation around a month ago and I didn't see any wisdom teeth taken out that weren't under general anesthetic, plus they take 15 minutes at the most to do usually.

There is a phenomenon called "confabulation", basically false memories. Nearly everyone whose ever said they were awake in an operation has been confabulating, where their brain makes up often vividly real memories from little bits of information they may have observed from TV or film. They did test where they played audio-books to thousands of unconcious patients and not a single one recalled any of it.

I've had ingrown toenails removed, four times, the second two was with nail root removal, as they persisted in ingrowing.
It was local anaesthesia. Four, what felt like enormous, needles in each toes, horrible pain, though surely better than going through the surgery without it.

Really? Interesting.. This does seem likely, in my case. Either way it happened, I can remember it, and I do remember the little saw they used, they had to cut out a part of my jaw so they could get the lower ones out, they were impacted or something.
Thanks for the information though!

I'm studying to be a surgeon. I haven't had one myself. Pretty much everyone else in my family has, though. Lots of cancer, which is why I'm gonna be a surgical oncologist.

Had gynaecological surgery under general anaesthetic. The drugs were great, there was none of that counting down from ten crap, I was out cold, didn't feel a thing. Waking up was a bit of an odd sensation but no worse than waking up while still drunk.

Had local surgery on my hands, didn't like it.
