The swine flu has reportedly spread almost globally already, with a foothold on every continent. It will get worse, more people will be traveling when infected.

My only question is, what is its kill rate?
The kill rate is something that can easily be figured out. 1,600 people in Central America have it to around one hundred dead. One in every sixteen people will die if it spreads out.

I would like to see a source that it has a foothold on every continent. I have only heard it in the Americas. Europe is telling everyone not to go to the Americas, Russia has banned the meat trade with America temporarily out of fear, though noone in Russia is affected. And the MiddleEast is having a pig purge, killing around 300,000 pigs to prevent an infection, though there is no case of swine flu there yet. I don't believe Australia has any cases yet.

If anything, this swine flu is hurting America, Mexico, South America, and Canada's meat trade, and the Americas are hurting from the sudden decrease in travel. A few hundred million dollars has gone down the drain for them already.

What I love about this pandemic is that there are many news clips of people wearing masks. Wasn't it said at the beginning that wearing a mask will do nothing to prevent it?
We have people in quarantine here in Australia, so can't be certain just yet.

I did say continent, you know that isn't a country right? Right?

Yes, I know you meant continent. Don't worry. When I stated 'Americas' I meant North and South America. Then I went on unabated about what countries were reacting to it. I apologize for any confusion that may have caused. I didn't know of any infection outside of the Americas. It is a tad worrying to know that it's in Australia.

this little piggy went to market,
this little piggy stayed at home,
this little piggy had roast beef,
this little piggy had none.
And this little piggy had influenza A virus subtype hemagglutinin protein 1 neuraminidase protein 1.

Really, outside of mexico the virus is being handled quite well. I looked up the confirmed deaths attributed to swine flu. 12. Now, considering that at least a thousand people die from your garden variety flu every month, i'd say we've got a way to go before a full pandemic.

hey m8 now heres my veiw if u want it or not +P get ready for a text wall
i think the worry about swine flu is that it jumped the species barrier , a large number of Mexicans have "supposedly" died from it and the whole thing with 1918. the thing with mexico is that there are a large numbers of factors which could be effecting the cases there from nutrition to health care to the development of the virus, and the whole thing with 1918 (i don't know much about it so im going off what i have peaced together from others) yes it was a pandemic but that strain wouldn't be as developed as this one and th more developed a strain is surly the less deadly it is to its host right? i mean we are no use to a virus dead it needs us and our cells in order to reproduce so the healthy it keeps us the better for it, personally i think that the risk is of it mutating with anougher flu the easyer catching swine flu mixed with the deadly bird flu? owch probably not likely but possible but by far the biggest problem atm is the media the more out of proportion they blow this the less likely we are to believe them if things do get bad (little boy who cryed wolf any 1?) sorry about the wall of text just felt like rambling on. enjoy the views of a 16 year old =P

Well they closed my school for Swine Flu, so I'm pretty happy with it.

Also got some good jokes too.

And once again American media are making this out to be the next end of the world as we know it...

It is estimated that ordinary flu can be responsible for the deaths of over 500,000 people each year. How exactly does your pathetic 'epidemy' with a whoopin' death toll of slightly over a hundred and number of infected at 700 compare to this? SARS was dangerous because it happened on a much larger scale(800 dead,8000 infected) and it was a new undocumented disease.

What we have here,on the other hand, is yet another mutation of flu and a rather innefective one, to say the least.

It's great how people get worried about things.

"Oh no! Doomsday is in 2012!" FAIL

"I'm gonna die of swine flu." FAIL.

Why do we love having things to be scared of? Can't we just have a nice, worry free time and if something happens just let it takes it's course and not worry about it?
Agreed. Just sit back and relax. If humanity gets wiped out from Swine Flu, or whatever then just make sure you die laughing. I personally think it's a load of bullshit, just as SARS, and Birdflu were. Tbh quit worrying and be grateful for what you have.

Its just the flu. Every single year, the flu virus mutates and takes on new forms, and while some of those can be potentially deadly and harmful, this one is nothing to worry about, except for the media stampede riding on its back.

Someone once said when a black man becomes president pigs will fly.

Sure enough, 100 days later...SWINE FLEW!!!!
=Win

Anyways, the fear is not the current state of swine flu, but a possible remergence of a highly contagious deadly strain akin to the 1918 flu epidemic. No one is entirely sure what swine flu is going to do, whether it will piddle out or become something big. So therefore the CDC prefers to overreact and prevent a possible catastrophe rather than underreact and risk it. The news media is fear mongering to get more viewers, terrorism of course. I don't believe it will amount to much, however I prefer to have the CDC freaking out just in case :D. All of the above is opinion, if you have a contradicting fact you would like to point out please state your sources (if reliable) and a link if possible. Alternative ideas are appreciated, but only if based in logic, thank you.

Seriously, do we need any more swine flu threads? There's already like 10 of these things.

If you feel like you have to add anything to the discussion then use the search button and post on one of those.
I take your post and use it FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

And by that, I mean I agree with you. Too many swine flu threads. However, to contribute to the discussion: yes, that's what will happen. It's happened before.

It's just the flu. The only difference is that it mutated in such a way that your bodies anti-bodies aren't adjusted in a way that will leave everyone completely immune to it.

Runny nose, achy sinuses, bleary eyes, a week later and you're fine. Vulnerable people will die if they catch it however, because vulnerable people die when they catch THE FLU.

On the other hand it does make for a nice change in the news from the usual 'Economy is tanking, Gordon Brown is messing EVERYTHING up and still won't go, Jade Goody is still dead, Princess Diana may have talked to someone before she left in the car....'. It also gives all the politicians of the world a chance to come out and say 'Look how well we managed this CRISIS aren't we great?'. They know it's just the flu, but it's a vote winner, Damn it!
