Symphonic Metal kicks some serious ass in my opinion. I love listening to Apocalyptica, Nightwish, and Blind Guardian (yes, the last is a bit of a stretch, but I still think it's symphonic metal, thanks).

So my question is this: Not to discuss the genre, but rather what are some other bands that play in this style? So far I've only found Wolfmother which is another iffy fit, and I'm craving more!

(Viking and Pirate Metal are also welcome, because they're epic too)

EDIT: Let's throw in some Videogame Metal bands too if you know of any!

Children of Bodom. They're not one of my personal favourite bands, but they're very good at symphonic metal. Check the album "Follow The Reaper".

Wait.. wut? >.> I listen to both those bands and never really considered them symphonic metal... (Especially CoB, they seem to be more Death/Black Metal in my eyes)

Thanks though, I'll start up my iTunes and get shopping

Favorite band, and favorite album.
Godly!

Also, Dimmu Borgir.

So on a discussion board, you're telling us not to discuss? Then what are we doing here?

I shall discuss!
I think Symphonic Metal is a great and sadly too hidden genre in lack of better words. Because of it being metal many who would enjoy this genre chooses to hide from it. Wich is a shame, because they won't know what they'll be missing unless someone forces them. I myself are not a very big fan of metal genres such as black metal (if there's something like it) and Death Metal and the likes. You get the picture - "hardcore" Metal in general. It's just to heavy for me. Although I do enjoy Metallice and Mudvayne. But they're to me more than metal. THey're the good kind of metall. Same with symphonic Metal. Wich if you are a metal fan would be like heaven. You could imagine your favorite genre with melodies like Halen's. It would be a pure orgasmic experience. But if you on the other hand despise metal, it wouldn't do you much good. Because in the end. It is metal.

Symphonic metal is the kind of genre spinoff that I approve of. There are others that I don't think really deserve their own genre, but symphonic metal is. They're like .. Well, a league of their own. They are different enough from regular metal to be allowed to have their very own genre.

Anyone disagree?

As for a band, I think Blood Stained Children is an awsome band - in fact I think I will listen to them right now

Symphonic Metal? One band comes to mind: Krusader.

Look up Krusader's Cerridwen Wind.

I'm a fan of Power Metal, and finding this band was something breath taking.

Symphony X and Kamelot.

Edit: Within Temptation, too.

I see someone beat me to Kamelot. I second the recommendation for Ghost Opera, it's an amazing album (listen to Epica, too).

Arch Enemy are Symphonic metal with some songs and Blind Guardian is mainly Power if you think some of their songs are Symphonic try Iced Earth and Demons and Wizards.

If your looking for Pirate and Viking Metal try Alestorm (Pirate) Enslaved (Viking) and Swashbuckle (Pirate).

Just a little flame-prevention... or attempt on it. But since we've opened the discussion, fine...

Symphonic Metal often takes a cut above other metal genres, and even at times, metal itself. I personally despise hearing epic guitar solos for 90% of the song, and then get two verses of singing (forgive me, I'm a vocalist). As such I tend to not really like bands like Metallica, Dragonforce, and to a much lesser extent Avenged Sevenfold, because it's mostly just wanky guitar solo or just very fast playing, something I don't find particularly enjoyable.

Symphonic metal however is different for me, I don't mind solos and musical interludes (see "Hybrid Stigmata" by Dimmu Borgir) because it doesn't sound like some jackass just trying to masturbate his guitar, but rather someone actually trying to make something according to the fundamentals of music theory.

Ah, right, almost forgot to mention; I love bass lines. I absolutely hate a great deal of current metal bands because it's all just guitar with everything else in the background. Aside from artists like Muse, and various songs like "Panic Attack" by Dream Theatre, you don't get to hear a nice, original bass that doesn't either A: just follow the guitar to a weak extent, or B: Just play a single note over and over to follow the chord progression. Bass deserves more, to be able to break out into it's own riffs and the like, dammit, I can't stand hearing all this garbage that just sweeps it under the carpet as a filler instrument.

But enough of my ramblings... Hope this is enough to spark some discussion and make you happy :p

I think someone else suggested Dimmu Borgir, I'm going to second that motion. You can't go wrong with the album Death Cult Armageddon.

Wow... Dimmu Borgir legitimately frightens me now o_O Reminds me of an old, underground band that I think has faded into black (metal), Dawn of Ashes...
