Kamelot, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Stratovarius, Rhapsody of Fire (well some these are more power metal/ prog but since you Like Blind Guardian I'm sure you'll find a soft spot for these too) Diablo Swing Orchestra <- Symphonic avant-garde metal

most bands listed so far isn't "symphonic metal' in it's self but for example Symphonic avant-garde metal, Symphonic power metal, Symphonic black metal, Symphonic goth metal etc...

not really such a thing as symphonic metal i think its a cross genre term
like you said symphonic power ,symphonic black.

Yes the term Symphonic is to show that it has elements of symphonies.. backing choirs, violins, piano, cellos etc. It's like taking part of an Orchestra and sticking it into a metal band.. =D to create awesome music <3 ^_^

OHHHH.... okay, now I see what you mean. Thanks for clearing that up.

Hmm... come to think of it, I'd like to find more "Beauty and the Beast" vocalist bands... it creates a very nice contrast, or so I think.

Thanks for all the band names so far, it's tough to keep up with the Youtube-ing and all the recommendations...

Oh, and I'll throw in one here and in the original post: Vid'ja game metal! I recently found something that was a metal remix of the Super Mario Bros theme and nearly died of happiness.

Most of the bands I would mention have been, so in the interest of keeping things fresh, try this greek band called Firewind for symphonic stuff.

Ensiferum (to a lesser extent) as a nordic folk symphonic metal thing (along with Korpiklaani really) oops, someone mentioned them already ... ah well they are awesome so it matters not.
Wintersun (for those that say CoB belong here, personally I don't think so!)
Tristania (gothicy symphonic metal with gregorian latin chanting)
Midnattsol
Avantasia

Yes, symphonic and power are my 2 top metals of choice. Rhapsody of Fire, Kamelot, Apocalyptica, Nightwish... All good stuff.

A lot of Devin Townsend's stuff is very symphonic.

Hmm... I guess Within Temptation too... they don't do much for me though.

Im thinking Wintersun is more Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal. All the elements are there, but they are not Symphonic Metal.

still I remember it being called melodic :O
Well yeah that as well as Opera Metal.....

Oh and for more bands there are Therion, Within Temptation, Kamelot, After Forever
And Neo-classical metal is a metal sub-genre that is fairly close to some Symphonic metal bands =D

And I have now noticed that I need to get out more and get a life away form music and games...-_-;... Or I could keep doing what I do and be an awesome possibly soon to be mother that doesn't know anything apart from games and music...

Tell that to the huge underground Fanbase.
Its underground for a reason. If it was actually good, it would be mainstream which means none of you would like it you pretentious bastards.

Obvious troll is obvious.
No, its underground because it doesnt fit into the mainstream criteria which most people want.
Metal is an aquired taste, most of the mainstream stuff is a LOT easier to get into.
Hense why Dimmu Borgir went from Black Metal to Extreme Symphonic Metal to fit into the mainstream and make money.

Not everything in Mainstream is good.
And there are plenty of Mainstream Metal bands anyway?
And please lose the name calling, this isn't 4chan.

I noticed someone mentioning Viking Metal, there is no such thing.
I will call Bathory it, out of respect for Quorthon, but there isnt such a thing.
Its a theme, not a sound.
Early Bathory was Black Metal. Most of you will say it wasnt, it was thrash. But no, i assure you it was Black Metal. All first wave Black Metal was very thrash orientated.

My favourite musical genre - I like most metal and rock, but symphonic metal (particularly with female singers) is something you can really listen to. Ones I commonly listen to (many mentioned already alas) - not all are technically Syphonic Metal but the genres get so blurred and they're all pretty close (especially the live/unplugged sets).

Hell, even if they're not really symphonic, I'm sure many people here will like them/heard of them already. Links provided in case someone hasn't.

Nightwish (Annette and Tara nightwish are equally good IMO. Tarja's was more symphonic but Annette's stuff you can really rock out to)

Many of them probably don't count as "true" syphonic metal but they're the kinds of thing I listen to when I don't want something as heavy as Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Emperor or Amon Amarth but still having that syphonic twist.
