The Brothers in Arms series is pretty damn good.
Uh, if that counts. Tactical shooters aren't my forté either.
This. The BIAgames are challenging on normal and goddamn punishing on Authentic. You have to do everything at the right pace.

Arma 2? Apparently its not a game its a battle sim. Haven't played it yet though.
Arma 2 is more arcade-y than Arma 1 to be honest, if you want a solid military tactical shooter, it would be Arma/Operation Flashpoint[cold war crisis, elite, 2: Dragon Rising[[however, OPF2:DR does not have editor mode for the consoles, which kind of sucks.]
Remember kids:

1. OFP2 is a bastard and not the real OFP2.

2. Apparently, having recent events in mind, console players doesn't like having the option of editing anything so removing the editor was a solid move.

I'm sorry being a dick I know I'm sorry. But "Codemasters" aren't really masters of anything.

If you have Half-Life 2 (or any other Source Engine game, for that matter), I'd suggest the multiplayer mod NeoTokyo. It's not uber-realistic in a sort of Rainbow Six way, but it really requires teamwork, communication, and some strategy in order to play successfully.

The original Far Cry was also fairly tactical in the sense that you really needed a good strategy in order to take down the numerous squads of trained mercenaries you would encounter in the higher difficulty levels (although easy difficulty wasn't a cakewalk at all, either).

Who did I insult?

First of all: Your cousin is a ******. Sorry.
Self explanatory.

Anyway, yes we're nit pickers, we're tactical shooter players, we probably get off to some degree on nit picks.
That's not an insult, it's common knowledge.

Cops = Fags; Cousin = Cop; Cousin = Fag

I'm looking for a more authentic action expierence and I'm wondering if there are any combat simulators you reccomend. I refer to any realistic tactical shooters for the PC.
well if you find a copy of ARMA 1 and get all the community made patches you will get arguably one of the more realistic shooters out.

You could also just get ARMA2 but it is full of bugs (ARMA 1 had piles of bugs but the community got together and sorted it out)

Trust me, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a brilliant game. Get a buddy to play co-op or split screen with you and you can kill 30 hours without noticing it
That's how I spent my friday night last...unfortunetly. Nonetheless, the AI is awful. would you agree?
It's not the worst AI I've seen but it is bloody awful. The guns and pieces of equipment are brilliant though, if I'm completely honest I didn't notice too much how bad the AI was. I will play through again and pay attention to the AI

Red Orchestra (WW2, eastern front, tanks and infantry-combat. Also: it is possible to get your weapon shot out of your hand!), Killing Floor (zombies, tactical, not very realistic).

SWAT 4(this is a must),ARMA (i've only played the first one's demo but yeah.i've heard ppl saying that the second ARMA wasn't that good tactic wise) and Ghost Recon 2 (liked both singleplayer and multiplayer).

I've played Rainbow 6 vegas and i wouldn't actually recomend it,it's nice and flashy but still (allthough the previous ones might be good).

I wanted to try out Red Orchestra but i haven't so far.I think it might be good.

EDIT:Because i'm a dumbass and forgot to specify which one of the SWAT series i was talking about. :p

I did easily, mostly because I died so often.

I'm more of a run and gun and then beat them over the head kind of guy.

You maybe in the wrong place, this is a "Tactical shooters" thread, not a Rambo one.
If you take the right equipment, use your team right and use the different entrances then you can have a brilliant time playing it

I highly recommend Project Reality: It's a total conversion mod for Battlefield 2 with the intention of replicating reality. BF2 itself is getting on now so the graphics aren't up to much, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

I super-second this.
Most tactical online FPS i've played, from actual urban squad helo extraction, after holding down the hotel, to actual 2-man MG teams set up on a balcony... It's an epic experience.

To everyone saying Rainbow Six Vegas 2... Play Rainbow Six 3, compared to that, Vegas is like TF2. Also, SWAT4, really cool tac-shooter, with lots of nice non-lethal options, and incentive to use them.

The fist three Rainbow 6 games (Rainbow 6, Rogue Spear and Raven Shield) are the only ones worth investigating. After that (starting with Lockdown) the series got too arcadey and despite endless howls of protest from the fans Ubi seem intent on continuing in this direction. The newer games such as Vegas and Vegas 2 are semi-reasonable if you can ignore the bugs but in no way realistic like the old style. They even have regenerating health... /facepalm. SWAT 4 has trumped Ubi's card here and is probably the most realistic "police special forces" shooter I've seen as it throws civilians and less-lethal tactics into the mix in a much more seamless way than the Rainbow games.

The Ghost Recon series has been superceded by the ARMA games which are great and very realistic but also punishingly hard and very buggy. Only the very first Ghost Recon game is worth bothering with, ignore all that "advanced warfighter" stuff where once again Ubi refused to listen to their fanbase and tried to make the series too arcadey.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has radioactive mutants and ghosts and stuff so it's not realistic in that sense, but it also has well-modelled gunplay. Also, brilliant atmosphere. Once again a bit glitchy and buggy though, but if you want to shoot reasonably realistically-modelled AKs this is your game.

If you want WWII style shooters Red Orchestra and the Darkest Hour expansion are the best you can get for realism. Punishingly hard, these games reward tactics over twitch and duck-and-cover over run-and-gun. It really does feel like a war at times, especially when bullets and rockets are zinging over you head as you lie prone in a ditch freaking the hell out, which happens often. Be aware these games are multiplayer only, and the learning curve is steep.

The various iterations of America's Army are okay but have some very klutzy controls and annoying quirks (most heartbreakingly, you can't play as the insurgents) and also be mindful that it's basically a US Army PR exercise/recruitment stunt, which you may or may not wish to support.

Forget Counter-Strike Source, Day Of Defeat etc.... these games are not what you're looking for, they have certain concessions to realism but ultimately are fairly arcadey rather than simulatory. There are a few third party mods for these games though that make them more realistic.

Right then, in descending order from unforgiving arcade style to full on Mil-sim.

Countre Strike: Source
Rainbow Six: 1 through 3
Day of Defeat: Source
Day of Defeat
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
ARMA
SWAT 3
ARMA 2
SWAT 4
Red Orchestra/Darkest Hour
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis

Day of Defeat: Source onwards any weapon can potentially kill you on the first hit. From SWAT 3 onwards you almost certainly will be killed on the first hit. Whilst with SWAT4/Red Orchestra/Flashpoint if you don't have a detailed plan with multiple contingencies BEFORE you enter a mission you may as well forget it.

Depends on how hardcore you want yor simulation.
Man, since when is getting killed on the first hit realistic.
Killed, maybe. Incapacitated, in shock, and out of the fight? Almost certainly.

excellent. espicially sinnce 1.5 did a lot to help cut down on the drop-shotting LMG's effectiveness.
