If you want WWII style shooters Red Orchestra and the Darkest Hour expansion are the best you can get for realism. Punishingly hard, these games reward tactics over twitch and duck-and-cover over run-and-gun. It really does feel like a war at times, especially when bullets and rockets are zinging over you head as you lie prone in a ditch freaking the hell out, which happens often. Be aware these games are multiplayer only, and the learning curve is steep.
Did a little research, sounds like an awesome game (just what I'm looking for). I wonder; what's the community like? Still going strong?
Yes, you won't have problems finding players, it's very popular due to being cheap to buy and also the only thing like it in the WWII genre. I think DH is more popular than RO as it's newer. One is free when you get the other anyway so it doesn't matter much.

The fist three Rainbow 6 games (Rainbow 6, Rogue Spear and Raven Shield) are the only ones worth investigating.
I used to play Ravenshield religously, but lost it awhile back... I do agree that the R6 games got awful around Vegas, just too action oriented.
Yes Rainbow Six Vegas and Vegas 2 are really just Gears Of War with a tactical shooter paintjob. The bugs are horrific, the action's not very realistic and the 'terrorist hunt' gameplay is completely broken due to the very bady thought-out spawn mechanics, where instead of enemies being persistent on the map, they spawn during the battle and then go and seek you out, making any stealth play useless and also giving the player no reason to explore. I can't believe so many people in this thread are seriously suggesting Vegas 2 as a "realistic" option, I guess if Ubi's goal was to dumb down what people expect out of a tactical shooter they certainy succeeded.

The various iterations of America's Army are okay but have some very klutzy controls and annoying quirks (most heartbreakingly, you can't play as the insurgents) and also be mindful that it's basically a US Army PR exercise/recruitment stunt, which you may or may not wish to support.
Only two people have recomended this game. I thought it was supposed to be really good. Huh.
It's not. If you happen to be an American and pay taxes you may as well get it and see what your tax dollars at work are doing, because even though it's "free" you have in fact already paid for it. Hooray for propaganda, hey. Anyway, aside from all that, the game definitely does try to be realistic but I guess it's a good example of how realism alone isn't enough to make a decent game. It's a clever concept but it's just not that well realised, I guess because the US army only have so much time and money to throw at it, and also because they have to make sure that it's politically correct and portraying the army in a positive light so that compromises the gameplay more than a little. If you play it you'll get what I mean. There are third party mods you can get for Battlefield 2 and Counter-Strike made by backyard programmers that do basically the same thing and do it better. By all means give it a go but just don't expect too much and that way you won't feel too let down.
