Tattoos are generally obtained either for vanity or power. Vanity in that one believes that the tattoo they get makes them look cooler, tougher, edgier, etc. I once read an article on the power dynamic of tattoos. Something about how marking the body that god gave you lifts one's belief in their own power...a power assertion act, basically.
There are a ton of bad tattoos out there. I've even got a couple bad ones myself, but I don't begrudge anyone for doing what they want. As for the stupidity of some of the tattoos, some people just don't mature intellectually until later on in life. In my particular case, it was a conditional thing. As in, I was doing what Dave Attell calls "time traveling"...I only recall bits and pieces of the nights I got my ugly tattoos done.

I could go for a tattoo that said "beef". I would also write "it's what's for dinner" underneath it and put it someplace suggestive...if I ever got a tattoo, that is. As it stands now, my skin has enough trouble, so I'll limit myself to easily removed temporary decorations.Gestapo Hunter said:

OP: I remember a story I heard on tv where the people are miss led by the tattoo artists. The customer asks the guy at the shop 'hey i want something in mandarin that says 'life''. then the tat artist says okay I think I found the right one. Then a week later someone who knows mandarin ask the guy with the 'life' tat 'why did you tattoo 'butt sex' on your forearm?'
Actually, sometimes they do. And what's even better is the t-shirts. They just have random English gibberish on them, just like those shirts they sell in the States with random kanji.

Man, I fully agree with the OP, adding Chinese or Japanese tattoos when you don't even understand them is a complete waste of time.

To be pedantic, Mandarin isn't a written language. Chinese literature is uniform, despite there being a huge number of spoken languages and dialects.
Meh, I don't care what people write on themselves if they think it looks good. Although if they wanted real calligraphy, they should look no further than Ottoman signatures:

When it comes to kanji, if you cannot read it, do not get it under your skin. Remember, some kanji means differently depending on whether a Chinese person or Japanese person is reading it.
I have no idea why some people do it though. I suppose that they think it looks cool and cultured..until a Chinese person points out that they `love, power and courage` actually mean `a fool and his money are easily parted`
I'm not adverse to tattoos if they have a good backstory/significant meaning and look good, for example a good mate had one he got in the infantry, a skull wearing a slouch hat.
