why in gods name are people getting mandarin or kanji writing as tattoos?! I mean thats like me getting a tattoos with the word "beef" on my arm for everyone to see, which is exactly what my friends fiance did. Basically he wanted everyone to know that hes a Taurus so he decided to get a mandarins word for "beef" tattooed on to his arm thinking that it meant Taurus. So let me ask you, do you guys know anybody that does this stupid crap to make themselves look cool?
In your opinion you think it is silly, in their opinion they think it is cool. Just because you don't like something does not make it stupid.

Co-worker's boyfriend has one, I snicker to myself every time I see it peeking out from his shirt sleeve.Thankfully, they seem to have drifted off in popularity.

I'm assuming he's going to finish the back of his head with some art that matches the skulls.

Taurus = European zodiac.

Why would you get a tattoo for the European zodiac in Chinese characters?

It's the same concept as Latin terms: if you don't speak Latin, it sounds cool. Even if it makes no sense.

For example:

-Partis morsus es dolens
-Duos pro unus proprius
-Tripudio vulgivagus , sapiens scholasticus quod eximius madidus

Brownie points to the first man to run to babel fish for translation.
a part of to eat is painful
two before one properly
I perform a promiscuous ritual dance, scholastic humans who expected to be wet.

And for your information, no babelfish was used. Just me, my Latin notes and the handy-dandy Latin-to-English dictionary on my desk. It's a shame I'm not very good at it. :p

OT: Yes, it's a shame how people do this, but if they're not willing to go through the effort to find out what the thing they're permanently engraving into their skin is, then they deserve to lose their money and dignity.

Well, my friend and I are going for the more 'tattoos that actually mean something to the person who has them' approach. I've had the same image for about two years.

People who get tattoos in Kanji and don't know what they truly mean are pants-on-head retarded. I genuinely feel sorry for the tattoo artists who have to ink these symbols onto the people who want them. Honestly, Kanji is looking less and less cool by the day. The same thing goes with the tribal stuff. Mostly 'cause it's completely unoriginal and makes whoever has it look like a complete tit. Another one that I see a lot of is the cherry blossom branches.

I don't get tattoos whatsoever. As a great man once said: "You don't put a bumper sticker on a Mercedes".

Eh. Japanese words sounds really really stupid.

But tattoos are OK if you don't go overboard. Maybe a small one on your arm, or a **** on your ****.

I have a tattoo from PlanetSide. I was a fearsome grunt for the Vanu Sovereignty. I got the team's symbol on my shoulder. Best 3 years of my life. Would never get a tattoo I suspected anyone else had in a similar flavor.

My brother has Southern Cross and "True Blue" across his stomach. Horrible.
I wanted to get the Southern Cross tattooed on, but you're right. It's gone from a patriotic gesture to a label for bogones and/or those who reckoned the White Australia policy made us strong! No offense meant to your brother, don't know him so I ain't judging. Just that's what the Southern Cross Tattoo has become.

My cousin had an Asian symbol tattooed on the back of her neck. She doesn't know what it means. She doesn't care, she just reckons it looks cool. I find that acceptable (at least partly because this suits her personality, she doesn't care about deeper meaning or anything). It pisses me off when people get tattoos which they think have some deep meaning, but don't know the meaning at all.

I want a tattoo. Just waiting for the right thing to get permanently inscribed on my flesh.

My friend told me of a woman who got a tattoo she thought said "Love" but actually said something like "Grocery Store." Oh, how bad would that suck?!?
Yeah, but there are worse [http://www.tattooique.com/info/prank-tattoo-lettering-the-artists-riot/] things. This article tells of someone who got sick of the same phenomenon this thread is about, and started tattooing entirely different things than they asked him to. Sadly, he was imprisoned as a result.

A few of my friends have the Southern Cross for no particular reason that I know of; I guess they just like it... though if I were to move overseas for study - which might be happening soon - I might actually consider something like that... maybe.

Occams razor. In any "Why do people do X" scenario, the most likely answer is they are stupid. And now you know!
*Star flies across the screen* The more you know!
that is NOT how occam's razor works. you were probably thinking of hanlon's razor, but even then, you are wrong.

here, read on your material before you use it:

That seems alright. And as with Sketchy's brother, I'm not gonna judge your mates. I just remember some poor wog getting smashed badly by a large white group who each had a southern cross clearly showing. Same with a few people who I knew that went along to the cronulla riots. Put me off a bit.
Even still, its common as hell and I don't want something to common.
