OT: Yes, it's a shame how people do this, but if they're not willing to go through the effort to find out what the thing they're permanently engraving into their skin is, then they deserve to lose their money and dignity.
People who get tattoos in Kanji and don't know what they truly mean are pants-on-head retarded. I genuinely feel sorry for the tattoo artists who have to ink these symbols onto the people who want them. Honestly, Kanji is looking less and less cool by the day. The same thing goes with the tribal stuff. Mostly 'cause it's completely unoriginal and makes whoever has it look like a complete tit. Another one that I see a lot of is the cherry blossom branches.
I wanted to get the Southern Cross tattooed on, but you're right. It's gone from a patriotic gesture to a label for bogones and/or those who reckoned the White Australia policy made us strong!
