Okay, I don't like Team Fortress 2. I've tried playing it so many times. I've tried to get into it, honestly, but I just completely suck at it and fail horribly. Before you say anything, it's not because I just play "gritty, realistic war shooters". I play HL2, Serious Sam, Painkiller and Timesplitters, which are some of my favourites.

However, I just can't get into it. I've tried almost every class. As the Spy I'm always discovered when disguised or my cloaking always runs out as soon as I'm about to get past that annoying spy-checking Pyro. As the Pyro I start to set something on fire and promptly get killed. I just fail as the Scout and the Demoman. I somehow have a longer lifespan as a frikkin' Demoman than a Heavy. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

So, members of The Escapist, I implore to you to try help teach me to play Team Fortress 2 because as much as I want to it like it, it doesn't like me.

It's hard for new players to play TF2 now, mainly because there are Pros everywhere, just keep trying and you will get the basic Gist of it.

1) Go Pyro
2) W + M1
3) make people rage
4) ?????
5) Profit!

Yea, there's not really a way to teach ya how to get good; just keep at it till you start 'being good'. Just try and find a server where you can have fun despite sucking.

I'd say look at youtube videos.

I was a hideously bad spy, I mean awful, awful! Several good youtube "how to play spy" videos, and a summer between years a Uni later, and I wasn't amazing but I'd become competent. With a little luck, being 'in the zone' and a slight rubbish opposing team, I managed I one handedly stop an attack on our CP coz no one looked behind them while they all ran single file up the stairs.

I would also suggest playing the game a little bit in single player. Now this may sound really stupid but explore the levels. Knowing the routes, even if you don't know where what people normally go where, is a huge thing and is always the annoying part I have before enjoying a new level.

Also, I'd suggest try just to learn one class at a time if you can. And probably something like Heavy, Medic, Soldier or Sniper. These are all quite clearly defined roles, and are reasonably simple to learn (I think anyway). Also, pyro...yeah, I still get killed really quickly as a pyro all the time. Scout too.

Without knowing which class to focus on, or what in particular happens to you when you play, can't give much more advice; but you can learn a lot by watching other people, on youtube or while playing.

yeah its pretty crazy hard to get into TF2 now because there are so many TF2 whores out there that have hundreds (if not thousands) of gameplay hours. If you want to stick with it be prepared for a long and painful slog before you start to catch up.

However if you feel you must then start out with the medic.

TF2 is a hard game i give you that but... just tag along play the game and eventually you'll get good. It's just like everything else, practice will get you there.

I enjoyed the medic straight from the beginning. Run behind people while holding down a button and leg it when bullets start flying near you, how hard can it be :D

They have a greater depth in more competitive structures. Since they are the only source of reliable healing in the thick of battle, the entire game is focused around the team's medic. They call the shots, and the team moves around them. That's where the hard part of medicking lies. In pubs, it's by far the easiest class. Yes, you do just run around, strapping yourself to other players for protection in echange for their survivability.

In short, play medic. You can observe the flow of gameplay and understand the mechanics that go into fighting much better.

If you are going to play TF2 expect to die. A lot.

Also as someone above me said most people who play are quite skilled now, which can make it harder to get into. Keep trying and eventually you will get the hang of things.

Just don't give up, it really is a great game.

I'm sure this group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] will give you answers or tips to any specific class you wish to play as well.

If someone asks a question there they tend to get 3 people giving a paragraph or so for an answer.
There are Escapist servers as well if you want to tag along to a game.

I think the Youtube videos are a good idea though, helped me learn how to play a few classes properly.

play scout, never run in a straight line.

I consider my goals in every match to be
1) my team wins
2) halfway up the scoreboard at least

Instant respawn servers are VERY useful for practice.
Although after a long time on them, sitting through any amount of respawn time seems extra boring, not helped by TF2's 15-20 second times.

Yeah theres way to many Tf2tards. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many.

I played before the scout update came out and back then it was nicer. Now its turned into a little shit bomb. More rage then MW2 on xbox and people are too pro.

But theres a few memerable moments. If i were you just go Engineer, then make friends with a level 3 turret.

It was the same deal with me. Just stick to classes like pyro and soldier, who aren't TOO team based. At least not compared to others. Medic is fairly simple, but if you do it badly, there are a lot of player who will take it too seriously and abuse you. So just get used to it as maybe some of the offense characters, then explore the others. The only real thing to do is practice

Practice makes perfect... is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard someone say. If you've got friends on there, try and follow how they play the classes. There are also some great videos on youtube describing the advantages and disadvantages of each class. Failing those two, just keep on trying. It's hell to really get into the game at the start, you need to find what techniques really suit you.

The Spy is the hardest class to learn and play as efficently.
If you are looking for simplicity, I'd recommend the Heavy and the Soldier or maybe even the Pyro as they have little to no main goals they need to do as a class besides killing everything.
