Click on the different classes and look at the tips there. It won't make you excellent but it will give you a basic idea so you don't die after 2 seconds.

Every class in tf2 is effective in some situations, not all, so you have to know when to run and when to fight.

I would help, but for some reason, my TF2 game has all the classes discolored, making them all look white. Not red or blue. Just White.

Okay, I don't like Team Fortress 2. I've tried playing it so many times. I've tried to get into it, honestly, but I just completely suck at it and fail horribly. Before you say anything, it's not because I just play "gritty, realistic war shooters". I play HL2, Serious Sam, Painkiller and Timesplitters, which are some of my favourites.

However, I just can't get into it. I've tried almost every class. As the Spy I'm always discovered when disguised or my cloaking always runs out as soon as I'm about to get past that annoying spy-checking Pyro. As the Pyro I start to set something on fire and promptly get killed. I just fail as the Scout and the Demoman. I somehow have a longer lifespan as a frikkin' Demoman than a Heavy. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

So, members of The Escapist, I implore to you to try help teach me to play Team Fortress 2 because as much as I want to it like it, it doesn't like me.
I think you should head over here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC]. It's the Escapist TF2 group. The first thing we need to do is find out what class you play best as. Unfortunately, this is gonna mean putting a couple of hours in to each class, finding out what works and what doesn't. I started as a scout, I'm one of those "rush in and shotgun to the face" types. Every time I tried it? I got slaughtered. I tried a couple of other classes, picked up the Heavy and it fell into place. Once we know what you play best as, I'm sure one of the guys in the group can give you a few pointers. Whatever you do though, don't write it off just yet?

Wooo I love being good at Tf2.
I've dominated every person at once TWICE on a nine person team before.

play scout, never run in a straight line.

I consider my goals in every match to be
1) my team wins
2) halfway up the scoreboard at least
Just to add, a 1:1 kill:death ratio is good to aim for as well. It lets you know that you're doing OK.

But, fi you're playing medic, sometimes you'll be at the top, sometimes not. A good way to see if you're being a good medic is look at both teams scores. Does your team have more points? Good. You're keeping them alive.

It takes helluva lot of practice. That's all I can say that's useful.

Watch and observe as well. Strategic placements are twice as efficient than running in head first.

Start off as a Medic to learn the maps.
Spy is the hardest class to get good (or even decent) at by far.
As a Demoman, remember that your pipebombs arch.
Scouts are for hit-and-run stuff.

Really, just find a good server and keep playing. It takes some getting used to, and the learning curve is pretty steep because (as others have said) most of the people playing have been doing so for a while.

Also, there's an awesome training map here [http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/107794]. Try using it to get somewhat familiar with how the classes work in combat.

I'm the same, i'm crap at it. Any kills I get are usually flukey. It dosen't help that the clan I play with are all incredible at it. Aah well, i'll play something else that i'm better at instead.

It's very simple: keep finding new servers until you find people that suck as much as you do.

That's exactly what I did. When I got a little better, I moved on to some of the harder servers.

Spies aren't the same master of disguise that everyone thought they were, now everyone knows to look for the tells.

And the Heavy is currently one of the most UP classes, since almost any class can take him down before he revs up, and any combination of 2 classes that isn't Scout+Medic can take him out also very easily.

It was more fun in the beginning. BEFORE all the class updates. Even after the pyro update and it was still alright but then the heavy and the scout update came and I just couldn't take it any more. I tried coming back after each of the other updates but I just couldn't get back into it.

I'd say try not to use the harder to master classes e.g. scout, demo, spy, maybe even pyro (it maybe easy to get a kill or two with the pyro but lasting longer than that takes some skill)

so in short use the easier classes to start with. I only got the game a year ago and found it hard to start off as everyone else knows what their doing. I started off as heavy and that did me ok to learn the basics. I now mostly play scout BONK!

Just keep at it, thats my best advise.

2fort is a good place to practise. It has a bit of everything for every class, such as corner ambushes for pyros, an area for sniping and hiding spots for spy. Also a good small map so you won't get too lost.

Is there ANY class you felt you did alright as? I mean sure you suck right now, but I'm certain no one can fail hard as Medic unless they mess up an uber or go exclusive battle medic. That's not to say Medics can't join the fray, just have enough sense to use the only gun in the game that can heal people.

But there are a plethora of tips I can give you and you can find on places like tf2wiki.net or tutorial videos on youtube. Now let me give advice based on what you've said and other things you possibly had problems with.

-Disguises, until a much needed buff is added, are mostly for at-first-glance protection and enemy building-usage privileges. So it is wise to steer clear of pyros unless there is a clear opening for a backstab on their muffled asses. And try not to over use cloak. It's only really necessary for coming up and behind enemy lines or that tanking engie for the classic (and rage-inducing) stab and sap. Though the unlockable watches might work for you, especially C&D. One last tip for spy, play different classes. If you know how a class is meant to act or where they usually go, disguises become that much more effective.

-As a pyro, you work best when flanking and ambushing. You DON'T just run up to the face of a spun up heavy and hope for the best. You need to sneak your way through, and find those players that never wtach their backs, and give them a bit of an all-over tan.

-I'd give Scout/Demo tips, but those are much harder to explain.

Problem with the Spy is that it can be countered by any class, and by almost any wary player. I can't recall the last time I got backstabbed when I was paying attention. You can't stab an alert player. Wait for a massive distraction: a choke point, a friendly/enemy Ubercharge, and then you can go to work.
But again, don't go Spy if you're new. The class has a larger element of luck involved than most classes.

Try out Soldier. He's a bit slow, sure, but he's packing power and versatility. Let's just say there's never a situation when having a Soldier around would hurt.

Download tr_walkway and square off against bots to practice your aim and whatnot. [http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=2217] To use it, go to Create Server > (set max players to say, 12) > Start. Happy hunting.

I'm on 180ish hours now and I've not got the hang of most of the tatics of all the classes, that said I'm a competent medic if I'm not pissing around and sometimes if the mood takes me a just slightly average demoman. It does take a while to get into which class you like best it doesn't help getting slaughtered every minute or so but after a while you get the hang of dodging most projectiles thrown at you. Hang in there man you can do it, and two other people mentioned this but join the escapist tf2 group on here you'll get plenty of tips off them.

I started on Soldier, and got pretty damn good back in the day (pre-patches...) My highest score is soldier with 40 - epic 2Fort defence ^_^

I'd recommend picking one and persisting. 'How to play' vids are good, and try watching where your opposing number runs - routes around maps etc that are more effective for certain classes (though be aware that over the course of the game your opposition may well adapt if you start abusing a certain tactic).

Yeah, the Pyro feels just about right. I'm an alright Medic, but I find it a bit boring is all. I find it pretty hard to find a way to flank people though. Maybe it's because I'm not too familiar with the maps, but there aren't any good routes for flanking and a few maps.

Yea, there's not really a way to teach ya how to get good; just keep at it till you start 'being good'. Just try and find a server where you can have fun despite sucking.
This guy talks the truth. Started exactly like this and have since played it daily since 08'.

Then of course I cant get enough of the charachters, the humour, artstyle and the best damn voicecast ever summoned for a game.
