So, members of The Escapist, I implore to you to try help teach me to play Team Fortress 2 because as much as I want to it like it, it doesn't like me.
Practice

As a Scout, be like a wasp.
As a Soldier, be like a tiger.
As a Sniper, be like an eagle.
As a Demo, be like a monkey, throwing poop around.
As a Heavy, be like a bear.
As a Medic, be like a humming bird.
As a Pyro, be like a weasel.
As a Engineer, be like a beaver.
As a Spy, be like a chameleon.

Best way to start is probably Soldier if you're used to FPSs, Pyro if you're rush & attack, Medic if you just want to learn and get points.

You will die. A lot. But get used to the maps and where people come from/go to. Then work out how to stop/help them. They'll (hopefully) do the same for you.

Learn where the Engie nests appear, where the Solly/Demo/Heavy fire from, where the Spy/Pyro can appear from; and always aim for the Medic.

Hope that helps :)

Well, thanks to everyone's help I'm beginning to get the hang of the game :)

I'm settled into using the Pyro, managed to get the Hard To Kill achievement which surprised me and if circumstances allow I make a decent enough Spy and Medic.

Go to a begineer server, and once you start thinking everyone on the server sucks, then you are ready.

Okay, I don't like Team Fortress 2. I've tried playing it so many times. I've tried to get into it, honestly, but I just completely suck at it and fail horribly. Before you say anything, it's not because I just play "gritty, realistic war shooters". I play HL2, Serious Sam, Painkiller and Timesplitters, which are some of my favourites.

However, I just can't get into it. I've tried almost every class. As the Spy I'm always discovered when disguised or my cloaking always runs out as soon as I'm about to get past that annoying spy-checking Pyro. As the Pyro I start to set something on fire and promptly get killed. I just fail as the Scout and the Demoman. I somehow have a longer lifespan as a frikkin' Demoman than a Heavy. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Is there ANY class you felt you did alright as? I mean sure you suck right now, but I'm certain no one can fail hard as Medic unless they mess up an uber or go exclusive battle medic. That's not to say Medics can't join the fray, just have enough sense to use the only gun in the game that can heal people.

But there are a plethora of tips I can give you and you can find on places like tf2wiki.net or tutorial videos on youtube. Now let me give advice based on what you've said and other things you possibly had problems with.

-Disguises, until a much needed buff is added, are mostly for at-first-glance protection and enemy building-usage privileges. So it is wise to steer clear of pyros unless there is a clear opening for a backstab on their muffled asses. And try not to over use cloak. It's only really necessary for coming up and behind enemy lines or that tanking engie for the classic (and rage-inducing) stab and sap. Though the unlockable watches might work for you, especially C&D. One last tip for spy, play different classes. If you know how a class is meant to act or where they usually go, disguises become that much more effective.

-As a pyro, you work best when flanking and ambushing. You DON'T just run up to the face of a spun up heavy and hope for the best. You need to sneak your way through, and find those players that never wtach their backs, and give them a bit of an all-over tan.

-I'd give Scout/Demo tips, but those are much harder to explain.

Yeah, the Pyro feels just about right. I'm an alright Medic, but I find it a bit boring is all. I find it pretty hard to find a way to flank people though. Maybe it's because I'm not too familiar with the maps, but there aren't any good routes for flanking and a few maps.
Well, it's best to take the road less traveled as Pyro. Think of yourself as a cloakless, disguiseless, spy. Until you get to enemies, then just go to town makin' bacon. Also, Arena mode is a big no-no unless you feel like being a spectator for a while. I know I' have. In fact, go to the nearest Arena server now to see how the veterans do it with only 1 life to spare.

Medic wise, It's actually more exciting than you think. Your ACCENT is enough to get every solly, scoot, and hoovy on your ass within seconds. So you have to juggle healing your teammates, preparing ubers, and telling your pursuers to fuck off with a face full of needles. Very exhilarating on something like Payload offense with 99% uber, everyone else is dead, and you have crockets, baseballs, and boxing gloves barreling towards you. It's much bett er than it sounds.

My best tip, and what I did, is start as medic to learn the maps and sort of learn how each class handles. I personally still love medic but will play any class now. Just keep at it and it will come to you soon enough. Then, you can move to something else, pyro is easy to pick up, but hard to master. Heavy is also a better starter, but once again tough to master. Scout is loads of fun, but needs ZERO lag and quick reflexes.

I dunno, just find a good server and keep at it. Pick one class and stick to it.

I personally started as medic, than went pyro/engie, then scout/soldier, then demo/heavy/spy, and have dicked around with sniper but don't enjoy it as much as the rest. Now I just play what the team needs, and what I'm best at for the particular map.

Note: Spy is easily the hardest class to pick up and play, and so it should be the last class you try and learn. To play spy effectively, you MUST know how every other class plays, and how every map handles.

Be sure to read exactly what every weapon does so you can create the best load-out. Also, watch the top players when you are dead to get neat new tactics. For more extreme tactics, just check out youtube (ex: how to play demoman) and it will bring up a ton of videos. Also, check out TF2tactics.com, lots of great videos there too.

For written tactics, check out tf2wiki.net. Extremely helpful for learning new tactics.

Stick with it, man. When I first started playing TF2 I SUCKED. It took about a month for me to get skilled at the game. Trust me though, it's worth the initial failure.
