They didn't sell well because, as much as we like to believe that gamers aren't prepubescent wankers with the attention span that only CoD can appease, the majority are.

If that makes me sound like an elitist than so be it, but when Team Ico gets shut down because not enough people are buying their brilliant games, it will be a sad day.
You're not an elitist. I for one didn't really like SOTC just because of how empty the game felt, but it was still at least somewhat enjoyable.
I felt the same way about the game: very beautiful but kind of minimalist. I'm not saying that the game needed hoards of monsters between every colossus, or that the actual battles weren't amazing. But the game did feel a bit top-heavy.

At least the empty world felt like it made sense as opposed to the open world in No More Heroes.

The rest of the interview with Ueda - who judging by this is apparently the Japanese Peter Molyneux
I can't be the only one who found that funny, right?

OT: Never played those games, though I hear SotC is good.

This worries me greatly - I sincerely hope he's just a perfectionist and hasn't been deceived by Sony's number crunchers into thinking that more dollars always means better.

Can't fault a man for setting higher goals, though I find it hard to believe that SotC could be any better.

Rest easy my friend, they could not have been better.

Perfect in it's own league.
It's an entirely different genre of game and it still stands there alone and awesome.

And. It. Is. Good.

Geez...if they think the games aren't good enough I sure as hell wanna see what they think is! Unless the game pays my bills and comes with a hottie to "take care" of me between games I don't see how much better they could really get.

Please, blame it on the ignorance of the mainstream audience. Don't belittle yourself like that, it hurts...

If a game that, hands down, ranks as my favorite game in existence is not good enough, I shudder in anticipation to see what he thinks is.

I really hope that he doesn't sacrifice any of the art of the game to help market it to a more mainstream audience. Although, from reading the interview it looks like all of the things he's improving on are headed in the right direction. I'll keep my fingers crossed for this.

Meh, I can't stand the play the game due to the controls. They feel delayed and awkward. Additionally the frame rate and camera is pretty junky.

I feel bad for the guy. Truth be told I wanted to play SotC, but never got to buying the full version. The demo was amazing. I liked how the hero was climbing a giant and stabbing it in its weak spots.

Not only that, I heard good things about this game. Good things that tempt me to buy SotC. I don't know about Ico, but I'll give that a try also.

NEO: A black cat went past us and then I saw another that looked just like it.

TRINITY: How much like it? Was it the same cat?

NEO: It might have been. I'm not sure.

NEO: What is it?

TRINITY: A deja vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix. It happens when they change something.

"I believe the issue is with the product," Ueda told Edge [http://www.next-gen.biz/features/fumito-ueda-on-the-last-guardian?page=0%2C2]. "The fact that Ico and SOTC didn't sell well is because they weren't good enough. They didn't have enough to appeal to users. The Last Guardian wants to learn from this. I'm making the game so that it's appealing, with the hope that many people will give it a try and love it."
Oh god... we all know what THIS means... a cover system, QTEs and regenerating health!

I always worry when developers try to "appeal to a wider audience" it usually means they basically end up doing what everyone else is doing simply beause they know it sells. No risks = no innovation. Sad times.

I liked SOTC good enough, for such an "empty" game it managed to cultivate a far greater sense of atmosphere than most so-called AAA titles these days.

this is old news to me. I kept tabs on Ico & Shadows of Collection HD to see when it would come out.

Lies! Ueda actually backs up his words with amazing games! :D

Seriously though... those 2 games were wonderful but I thought SOTC did have its flaws.

You look me in the eyes and tell me Peter Molyneux did not make amazing games.

OT: He's wrong. Them being "not good enough" has little to do with them selling little.

I absolutely loved Shadow of the Colossus, one of my few perfect 10 games. Though I guess there is one area I thought they could have made it better... while I loved the open world and battling the various Colossi, I thought it could have used some more platforming/puzzle/exploration elements between each Colossus. For example, the very first one you have to scale up a cliff to reach it. This is used as a tutorial to teach you the controls, and afterwards half the time you just walk into an open area and the Colossus pops out. Rather than simply making it the tutorial I wish they expanded on this platforming element leading up to each boss.

Well, if ICO and SotC weren't good enough, I eagerly await the day when they do get it right because that will be the best. game. ever.

I'm all for game designers learning from their mistakes, sure - it's how sequels improve on what came before - and I'm as excited for The Last Guardian as anybody, but saying that Ico and Colossus weren't good enough? You take that back, Fumito Ueda. You take that back right now.

lol.
"My favorite games didn't stand up to mass marketing? YOU TAKE THAT BACK! >_<"

OT I know how you feel man. My favorite game of all time is probably Planescape Torment.
Not enough people have played it, It's running on the Infinity engine, and it's buggy as hell, and there will never be a second even based on it.
I know how you feel man... your pain speaks to me. :(
At least Black Isle was proud of PST, they didn't call it not good enough...
