I think that the reason it didn't sell well is because making a deep game with lasting appeal and making something that will sell well because it caters to a large audience are diametrically opposed to one another, in most cases anyway.

This is killing me. The poor man is trying to understand where he went wrong instead of looking at the witless, tasteless mouth-breathers that call themselves gamers and renouncing the whole medium in a fit of despair.

Which is what I'll do if the Last Guardian bombs. Honestly, fuck gaming, the industry and all the culture that surrounds it if they'll ignore something beautiful in favour of the new manshoot. If there's no incentive to create magnificent experiences any more, then I have no incentive to game.

Saying they were flawed? Certainly, and I think the flaws are overlooked in those two games maybe a little more than they should be in the face of the uniqueness and beauty of them. There's something that bothers me about these statements, um...

BETTER SALES DO NOT MEAN BETTER GAMES!!

If that were the case, Gears of War and Call of Duty: Black Ops would be the most beautiful, life-affirming and intellectual stories the world has ever seen. Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen would be better than The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption and the Star Wars trilogy combined. This is NOT the case.

Lies! Ueda actually backs up his words with amazing games! :D
You look me in the eyes and tell me Peter Molyneux did not make amazing games.

OT: He's wrong. Them being "not good enough" has little to do with them selling little.
Looks you right in the eyes...

Fable 2 and 3 could have been amazing games, but weren't.

Dungeon Keeper. Black & White. The Movies. Syndicate.

If that's not a great track record, I don't know what is.

Is this why every Last Guardian trailer has this bouncy musical score; So that it's more appealing to the mainstream? 'Cause I got to tell you, it was pretty offputting.

I hope Ueda isn't going to sacrifice new and interesting gameplay for the sake of marketability. Or is this why The Last Guardian has been delayed to 2012; So they can add more "bang for your buck", like multiplayer? ...All of a sudden I'm getting the shakes.
Funny, the other day while people were getting excited about the Ace Combat: Assault Horizon trailer, a few PS3 gamers pointed out that Namco Bandai was trying to market it to the CoD player-base by making it more shooting/action oriented. The aircrafts in the trailer never made any tight maneuvers, and the Pugachev and Kulbit that the Su-33 and F-22 pulled respectively were far too sudden not to be QTEs. Quite a few people got upset with the generic USA vs Russia setting as well.

Looks like console games are being consolified!

The only thing I didn't like about Shadow of the Colossus was that I've managed to beat it in one night.
It was a great night though :)

Seconded :(

That said, a game can always be made better. The main concern is that the developer doesn't go and turn an awesome niche game into a shitty mainstream one just to reach a wider audience.

Don't worry I doubt that that snippet tells the whole story.

He makes stuff and an awful lot of creators are unhappy with their past works, taking every chance to point out the flaws.
Its what drives them to do better; the inability to create the exact vision in their mind combined with the knowledge gained in the attempt leads to the feeling that next time they can nail it. (they tend to get quite excited by the potential of what they are making. Then have a euphoric honeymoon before flaws start to irk and the disdain creeps in. Check Molyneaux and many of history's greatest artists\writers\musicians\etc)

The tone of the article makes it seem that in his mind the game failed to sell simply because it was imperfect; not because consumers are fickle beasts that need to have their expectations spoon fed.
This seems to be backed up by the preview linked in the link as nothing that seems to be mass market pandering is in there - it seems to be a more refined better executed team ico game.

Remind me to eat my hat if I'm proved wrong.

Can't fault a man for setting higher goals, though I find it hard to believe that SotC could be any better.
Meh, I can't stand the play the game due to the controls. They feel delayed and awkward. Additionally the frame rate and camera is pretty junky.
I guess. Looking back, yeah, I had some issues with the camera at points, but I didn't have trouble with the controls. I don't remember the frame rate being any worse than most PS2 games at the time -- nothing an HD facelift won't fix. So yeah, technically, some tweaks could have been made, but I found myself enjoying the overall experience too much to get bogged down in small faults (small IMO, anyway).

Joking or not, there's no limit to how much comments like that piss me off.

OT: Well it's only a good sign when a creator of something great thinks something could have been better as you'll want to take that gusto for perfection into your next project.

Care to explain why? You seem rather easily offended. How do you survive on the Internet, Fluttershy?

Oh I just hate all the damn elitism that infests the internet like this. If only the gaming community was a little less prejudiced and a little more accepting we can all see we have the potential to be so much more.
(Side note: I take it from the "Fluttershy" bit that an avatar is actually there. Sadly I can't see what my avatar is for some stupid reason)

Ugh! I'll tell you what, there are less PC elitists than the number of people jumping on the 'all-PC-gamers-are-elitists' bandwagon unprovoked.

For fuck's sake, do you seriously think that I'll criticize a game just because it isn't multiplatform? Why the hell d'ya think I was complaining (in jest, I might add) that this game isn't on my platform of choice if I didn't think it was brilliant? Exactly what part of my comment came off as elitist, i.e. I'm better than you?

Wow, talk about instant hostility, just add water.
It's all based on perspective, and from what I've seen around the net is PC people doing that whole master race crap, and if you'll not from my previous post.

"Joking or not, there's no limit to how much comments like that piss me off."

It doesn't matter if you were joking or not due to comments being a text based medium I can grantee you that someone is taking that seriously which is helping seed the whole elitism that infests the internet.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to go photoshop a picture of instant mashed potatoes and replace it with "Instant Hostility" so I have it ready for another one of these instances.

Funny how you avoided my question about what part of my original comment came off as 'elitist'. As far as I'm concerned, the aforementioned elitists gain notoriety by complaining about linearity of games, lack of complex controls, high-quality visuals, etc of which I made none. Even through a text-based medium, I've to ask what part came off as elitist, since all I did was praise (by default, since I didn't criticize any of it's gameplay aspects) a console game, and merely wanted it on my platform (which is why I said the only way it's imperfect for me is due to the fact that it's not available on the PC). I did the exact opposite of looking down on a console game, which is why the 'elitist' branding is bewildering.

And the 'master race' shit is only used by console gamers sarcastically, not us.

And you came off as instantly hostile, since you made that baseless elitist assumption in the first place. So save the potato mash photoshop for yourself. And next time, if you can't qualify your irrational feelings (without an ambiguous 'matter-of-perspective' explanation), keep your asinine comments to yourself.
