Was it? It is illegal to sell or buy human organs, something that even China agrees on as evidenced in this article. This kid is facing health issues due to crappy operating procedures. How good conditions is the recipient going to be under? Kidneys are of the most finicky organs of the body, requiring a very strong match to not be rejected. Do you think these people are going to bother to wait for a recipient with a high likelihood of a match and non-rejection? No. They are in this for the money, plain and simple.Lono Shrugged said:

The odds are strongly against someone actually surviving because of this. Black market organ dealers don't have a care who gets saved.

What's the cost of a Kidney Transplant? $100,000 or more for just the transplant.
Where does that money go? That goes to the overly expensive doctor. Yes, that doctor in the Porsche. The one that golfs in Hawaii on the weekends.
What does the donor get from that kidney of theirs? Nothing. Not a damned thing at all other than a good conscience. And that's not all that comforting when sitting in a hospital bed for a few days recovering while thinking about that damned doctor being somewhere working on his back-swing.
If the kidney is my own, why is it illegal to sell? Did you know that stat-assisted suicide is legal in Oregon? Ya, that's apparently legal, but selling your organ to help someone else while still taking a small piece of the clear business profit that's included in the procedure is "illegal".

Same reasons why most anti-piracy measures tend to deter more legitimate consumers than pirates. Honest people, when confronted with such restrictions, will turn back and do something else. Those with less respect for the rules, however, will ALWAYS find some way around them.Klarinette said:

I was definitely not that stupid at 17 years old. The hell is wrong with this kid. Even if you are going to sell your kidney on the black market, its worth way more than that.
I mean get a job and save up all your money, hes got parents he isn't even going to starve. Even trying to steal one is a smarter choice, if you got caught you'd still be done with the punishment eventually and still have both kidneys.
