Actually you don't need big brother. With the test bed of facebook, myspace, twitter and youtube big brother has essentially been replaced. The mentioned applications actually changed the shift from having an "all knowing power" monitoring everyone into everyone watching themselves. Twitter tested the capitalist country to see if their citizens would have a high enough ego to post about their own personal activities throughout the day and it worked. Youtube created a group of exhibitionists in hopes of being picked to be a star much like the old days of hollywood.

Who needs someone watching the gates when everyone loves posting about themselves from microblogging to posting videos online for all to see.

Big brother and the hopes for revolution are over because the masses are just too distracted and into their own ego to act.

It's completely ironic how the Internet, a invention that hoped to connect the people of the world, produces almost the opposite effect - people are insulating themselves more and more from the outside world.

All the information anyone could want is at our fingertips - and yet, we really don't know anything more about what's going on than people did decades ago. We don't want all that information; we don't want to realize that the world is a big mess. Instead, we log on to Facebook and inflate our ego close to bursting.

It's all just feeding that child-like instinct of "Me, me, me!" The Internet is further dividing people, not bringing them together. And yet, paradoxically, it is without a doubt bringing people together.
