Teens Spend 31 Hours A Week Online

It has taken a well-funded British science report to prove teenagers spend 31 hours online a week, with approximately two hours wasted while watching porn.

One thousand British teenagers were polled by privacy software firm Cyber Sentinel [http://www.cybersentinel.co.uk%2C/] on their weekly web browsing habits and dissected data into some questionable statistics.

Per week, the average British teen spends 31 hours online divided between:
[ul]
[li]Nine hours spent communicating with friends via instant message and social networks[/li]
[li]Two hours on Youtube[/li]
[li]One hour spent researching cosmetic surgeries[/li]
[li]1.5 hours spent checking out family planning and pregnancy information[/li]
[li]One hour, thirty-five minutes spent studying diets and weight loss[/li]
[li]One hour, twenty-two minutes on medical sites for illnesses and puberty[/li]
[li]One hour, fifteen minutes spent strolling through dating sites[/li]
[li]Three hours, ten minutes doing homework[/li]
[/ul]

Most computer time is split between the kid's bedroom, a family living room or a separate study room.

One in four teenagers readily admitted to talking to strangers online and felt it was alright, while a third also admitted to hiding some of their web visits from their parents (one can probably guess which pages).

Ellie Puddle, Marketing Director of CyberSentinel, said, "The alarming thing about this research is that it shows that teenagers are obviously exploring all sorts of topics as a result of modern-day pressures. For instance, pressure to emulate celebrity standards of beauty is resulting in teens spending a significant amount of time researching cosmetic surgery. And for some reason they find it easier to go online to conduct their research than asking mum and dad for advice."

As much as I'd like to comment on the cure to some of these ailments, such as the excessive time spent on dieting and plastic surgery sites that could be substituted with fewer hours online, it's hard for a web writer to be critical of his fellow office chair brethren. Perhaps I'm outside their age demographic, but I don't remember ever spending an hour and a half of my week reading about puberty or pregnancy. In that case, the best advice I may offer is to upgrade your web browser to one with tabs to balance the obviously heavy load of information the internet has to offer. An efficient browser is a healthy one.

15 years ago, a similar study was released that mentioned teens spending 31 hours a week watching TV.

Coincidence?

What's with all the Scientist discovery, researchy, study forums. We get it, they're finding out and/or proving everything that isn't useful to us.

Motion Carried.

No way do I spend 31 hours online. Well, I suppose if you take off the time spent gaming online, and then the "half-online-browsing-forums" you bring the total down to about 35-40.

And Avida, you're absolutly right. No-one spends that long doing homework.

I think it's time for an Escapist experiment. We all fill in a diary of time spent online, doing what etc. and report back at the end of the week. It'd be interesting to see how "teenagers" differs from "gamers"

I really don't think that a survey of just a thousand people reflects anything accurately.

# Three hours, ten minutes doing homework

That much?? I call shenanigans!

Seriously though, I really hope British dudes don't spend that much time checking out cosmetics and pregnancy stuff.

This seems rediculous, for a start 31 hours is WAY too low. I mean really? I spend about 40 hours online just on week days, and weekends can add on another 30 hours sometimes. ^^ And 3 hours of homework? Online? How much homework needs the internet? I spend no time online for homework. And what's this crap about cosmetic surgery and puberty and what-not? I never visit such sites, forums and videos = all the uses of the internet (oh and downloading stuff for free - but I'm not big on that). And did they REALLY need a survey to work out that basically teenagers spend too much time on the internet? ^^

EDIT: seriously I hit the edit button so many times for this post, made so many spelling mistakes. :p

British teens spend an hour researching cosmetic surgery every week? I can't help but call bull on this, I honestly don't think you guys would do that on such a regular basis (not even counting the other things)
Just that? Dude the only thing they have right is the first 2.

Seconded. Would be interesting to show journalists what real surveys look like.

We don't. I think this survey was made by an idiot or they surveyed 1000 pregnant teen girls.

Look dude, us British guys have a real problem with flat, misshapen lips and worries about the pill, so we need to put the research in. Every night

Add me to the list. And..I might spend that much time online, but that's because I turn on my comp, check a few things and usually leave it running when I do other stuff, plus If you only counted time I went online to play games, look at funny stuff, porn and post here it would be about half that, but I always watch tv when on here so that brings my time up.

It really depends on where they have computer access, how late they stay up, whether or not they're involved in sports, etc. Only 1000 teenagers, the data is going to have an incorrect proportion somewhere...And 31 hours of computer internet access is better than 31 hours of tv. So it's better than before right?

I can only assume that the people studied were girls. I mean...

One hour spent researching cosmetic surgeries
1.5 hours spent checking out family planning and pregnancy information
One hour, thirty-five minutes spent studying diets and weight loss
One hour, twenty-two minutes on medical sites for illnesses and puberty
One hour, fifteen minutes spent strolling through dating sites

seriously what teenage guy dose that kinda stuff?
