Huh, did anyone else come into this thread expecting to hear the Mortal Kombat theme song? And should I really be admitting that I've already seen 3 of these movies?
I happen to have a copy of Philosophy of a Knife, and I couldn't watch all of it either Bob, don't feel too bad.
Unlike Men Behind the Sun, (which is in a similar vein) Philosophy is LONG. Like LOTR long. 4 ****ing hours long. And it has almost no plot (I challenge anyone to spot the plot without a guide) and practically no dialogue. It's just constant terrible horrible things.
And I can totally understand why it is like that.
See, the thing with a lot of these kinda movies is that they are aimed at hardcore horror freaks and as such are just regular horror movies juiced up to 11. And thats why I can watch them and not care too much. They are schlock exploitation that's aimed at desensitized people. The gore is shocking, the rest is often laughable.
And that's why Philosophy gets my vote for the 'best atrocity flick'. The whole point is to put in front of you things with almost no context or explanation just pain and horror and degradation. Which is pretty much what the people experimented on got. But its not really a movie. It's art.

I think alot of the really, really extreme gore flicks are supposed to be art. For example A Serbian Film, I haven't seen it myself (because you know I read a plot summary on wikipedia and that was enough to disgust me) but I have a friend who did and he said the the thing struck him about it was how artsy it was and how the director clearly thought it was art. And it's similar with Cannibal Holocaust, Salo and The Men Behind the Sun, the directors of these films are trying to make artistic statements and think that the best way to do this is by throwing unpleasentness at the screen. You can see a similar effect with sexuality, include a little sex/nudity in a film and it's titilation, include alot and it's porn, but if you flood the film with extreme, graphic sex then it becomes art. This weird logic means that makes Hostel explotation but Trash Humpers art, just because it's the less pleasent film.LostAlone said:
Anyone who is educated in a subject will be detached from the experience of the general public (that is uneducated in that subject). A specialist in any subject is defined by the knowledge in said subject they possess that others don't (which is why they're specialists), but if only specialists purchase a product it (obviously) won't make any money. Frankly I'm surprised he didn't mention "A Serbian Film", thought that could because he knew what it was beforehand and didn't see it. This is the correct approach I think. I got sick merely reading the description of what it was. I'm glad no one asked me to watch it, based off of the description it beats out anything Moviebob cites here.

Ugh... I'm already too squeamish for the senselessness of Eli Roth's movies. Torture porn is certainly not for me. I can't even understand why people even watch this kind of masochistic... material.
Bob, I'm not sure if you've already answered this question, but do you think of Apocalypse Now considering the animal slaughter in that film.
