Huh, did anyone else come into this thread expecting to hear the Mortal Kombat theme song? And should I really be admitting that I've already seen 3 of these movies?

I happen to have a copy of Philosophy of a Knife, and I couldn't watch all of it either Bob, don't feel too bad.

Unlike Men Behind the Sun, (which is in a similar vein) Philosophy is LONG. Like LOTR long. 4 ****ing hours long. And it has almost no plot (I challenge anyone to spot the plot without a guide) and practically no dialogue. It's just constant terrible horrible things.

And I can totally understand why it is like that.

See, the thing with a lot of these kinda movies is that they are aimed at hardcore horror freaks and as such are just regular horror movies juiced up to 11. And thats why I can watch them and not care too much. They are schlock exploitation that's aimed at desensitized people. The gore is shocking, the rest is often laughable.

And that's why Philosophy gets my vote for the 'best atrocity flick'. The whole point is to put in front of you things with almost no context or explanation just pain and horror and degradation. Which is pretty much what the people experimented on got. But its not really a movie. It's art.

I think alot of the really, really extreme gore flicks are supposed to be art. For example A Serbian Film, I haven't seen it myself (because you know I read a plot summary on wikipedia and that was enough to disgust me) but I have a friend who did and he said the the thing struck him about it was how artsy it was and how the director clearly thought it was art. And it's similar with Cannibal Holocaust, Salo and The Men Behind the Sun, the directors of these films are trying to make artistic statements and think that the best way to do this is by throwing unpleasentness at the screen. You can see a similar effect with sexuality, include a little sex/nudity in a film and it's titilation, include alot and it's porn, but if you flood the film with extreme, graphic sex then it becomes art. This weird logic means that makes Hostel explotation but Trash Humpers art, just because it's the less pleasent film.

Anyone who is educated in a subject will be detached from the experience of the general public (that is uneducated in that subject). A specialist in any subject is defined by the knowledge in said subject they possess that others don't (which is why they're specialists), but if only specialists purchase a product it (obviously) won't make any money. But I believe that specialists/experts play an important role in consumerism, because the general public relies on them to make good recommendations, and to help guide us in our decisions when it comes to purchasing products we are (comparatively) clueless about.

Frankly I'm surprised he didn't mention "A Serbian Film", thought that could because he knew what it was beforehand and didn't see it. This is the correct approach I think. I got sick merely reading the description of what it was. I'm glad no one asked me to watch it, based off of the description it beats out anything Moviebob cites here.

This is the reaction of a very good Christian girl of whom I happen to know to a few scenes. All you see is her reaction. I can't believe Coughlan had her watch this.

Ugh... I'm already too squeamish for the senselessness of Eli Roth's movies. Torture porn is certainly not for me. I can't even understand why people even watch this kind of masochistic... material.

Bob, I'm not sure if you've already answered this question, but do you think of Apocalypse Now considering the animal slaughter in that film.

Salo is an awful movie. Terrible acting, directing, scripting. Just a gross out movie for those who did an arts degree.
Completely agree, watched it for a dare or something a while back. Just found the whole film boring.

Not seen the rest of these, may give them a try sometime.

I'll pass, thanks. But thank you for telling me just how much worse it gets than Saw. I really needed that boost to my faith in humanity.

I recently researched a few of these (I've never seen any or likely will EVER see any of these movies). I read about them and mentally added it to a 'Do NOT watch it cos you can't un-watch it!' list.

Although I have only heard of a few that you mentioned...some others that I looked up include Irreversible and strange 'fetish porn' movies like Deep Throat (where I read that the actress was forced to film the scenes with a gun pointed to her head...not sure if it's true or not but it's completely fucked up if it is!)

Oh wow, i guess I managed to catch Society on TV when I was a kid. Because I always remembered that fucked up or scene where everyone melts together and starts eating others. That's the kind of thing you don't forget too easily. Never had any idea what it was but I've been trying to find out for years. Thanks Bob. I might have to check out a few of these flicks, they definately sound like a fun filled evening with beer and friends...

The only movie you mentioned that I have seen was Audition, which was, um...interesting.

Anyway, I hadn't actually heard of Unit 731 before, very interesting piece of history.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this list and immediately had Brad Jones appear in my head.

I have to wonder how strong BOB'S stomach is, because I've SEEN half of these films and... yeah. Not that interesting.

FUCK YEAH WE ARE THE HORRIBLE MONSTER GENERATION!

Ah, so he did. I skipped over the second half of that note because I thought I understood what it meant. Apparently I was wrong.

The [edit]second[edit] saddest thing about Cannibal Holocaust is that it was actually a pretty decent movie (or would have been, depending on how much you're affected by the animal cruelty). It will never (and should never) be fully appreciated because of those bad choices.

I'm not saying the acts in the film are necessarily enjoyable to watch (lots of dismemberment, lots of rape... lots), but I found the whole presentation damn effective. Damn, I say.

Being a fan of practical special effects, kudos must go to the director for having to prove in court that his human-oriented special effects were fake... of course, he probably wouldn't have had to do that if he hadn't put real animal slaughter in the film... so kudos taken back. Damn, I say.
Alot of the time I find that an actually good movie like Cannibal Holocaust is much more disturbing since it lets you experience the movie. A crappy story means it's all just pixels on the screen to me.
