Spy check. A lot. There's no friendly fire and ammo is plentiful, so just go for it.

There's been a lot of great advice in this thread so I'll just say two things.

1-Good Engineers win games.

2-Congratulations on your purchase and I hope you enjoy the near endless amount of fun TF2 will bring you.

Most of the TF2 classes follow the logic of "easy to play, difficult to master", the best thing to do is play around.
Find 2-3 classes you're comfortable with and roll with them, never stick to one class because you never ever want to have shitty team balance.

Agreed on this, along with the "fourth sniper" sentiment.

If you have a particular play-style from other shooters, chances are you'll find a few classes that cater to your tastes. For example, I thoroughly enjoy picking off enemies at range, ambushing them when they're up close, and setting up defenses & traps to deal with intruders. So I tend to go for Sniper, Spy, Pyro, Engineer, Heavy and Demoman (in that order).

However, I also enjoy Scout because it's very fast play and his lines of dialog are hilarious. :)

My tip is that with medics there is a bond. Not only is he there to stop you dying, you offer the same in return.

Keeping medics alive = more ubers = more progression of the game.

Also, if you have a mic, try and coordinate with people. Like get a spy to sap engy stuff and then get a demo in to ensure it gets blown to hell.

If you want quick easy kills be a pyro; however, it won't help progress any of your skills but it'll make you feel better.
When you're a spy, you're an actor. Try to think of what the other team would do, I know it sounds stupid but it works 70% of the time.
If you walk through someone, they're on your team, if you bump into them, kill it quick!

So I just bought Team Fortress 2 on Steam and it's downloading right now. I've heard alot of good things about TF2 and decided to try it out.
So in the meantime does any one here have any tips or tricks they'd like to share? Help a brother out?

I'm a complete and total newbie to this by the way.
It's hard to teach.
The game's very simple on a fundamental level.
Just observe how each class works and adapt.
You should have the hang of it in a couple of days.

- Medics win games.

- Don't fuck with the Heavy at close range. It won't end well.

- Spy check. A lot.

- Soldier, Engineer, Demo and Medic are good classes for beginners.

Not to "advertise" for the group I'm in, but UKCS is a great TF2 group with the servers and the community, just search for it on steam, they got many servers :D

Hehe, I'm downloading the game as we speak.

Seems like lots of new TF2 players, at least 3 of my friends are downloading the game for the first time as well.

Pyro and Heavy are good if you just want to deal a lot of damage straight away, Medics are good to start with if you like support classes. I'm always the healer, so I started on Medic and got rather good at it. I play Pyro the most now, though, because there's skill to it, there's a lot of fire and, shucks, I love an underdog.

I'm about to hit 100 hours of Pyro alone.

A good class to start off with is the soldier, he's the easiest class to get started with, but the class also has one of the highest skill ceilings. Once you get a better understanding of gameplay try out all the classes, none are too complicated, but some are definitely harder on new players than others (I'm looking at you spy).

Stay away from arena servers until you get a good grasp of the game, there's nothing fun about dying 2 minutes into a game because you're new and don't have a good grasp of what's going on, and then having to wait 5 minutes while everyone else fights. I highly recommend Badwater or CP maps.

As a spy or a scout, if things aren't going your way, retreat. The Scout can do this fastest, and the Spy can dip behind cover and cloak. Don't keep fighting if it looks like you're going to lose, these classes have the luxury of being able to pick their own battles and it shows.
As a Pyro, you want to hide behind corners and do ambushes; I don't play as the pyro much so I can't say more.
The soldier, I think, is a decent, all-round friendly class for newbies; probably a good start.
If your team has no medics and you're not doing so well, switch to medic and heal everyone at the front lines, even if you're not used to timing an uber (or if you don't have a microphone and can't co-ordinate with typing.)

You can't quickscope. Just don't try it.

Also, remember it's called Team Fortress 2. Every class has a role, it's not just about getting as many kills as possible, and it's much more fun if you play as a team.

I know a server with the most skilled playerbase I have seen yet, and admin action is never required, except for the odd scramble. The players are also pretty helpful to newbs. PM me if you want it.

Thanks guys, but unfortunately I'm going out of town for a week. I'll see about it when I get back.
