We had our friend Jessica over yesterday, and while we were visiting with her, her new boyfriend called and asked if he could join. Sure, no problem, right? At first, he was an amicable enough gentleman; we all were just having some casual conversation, and I asked if he'd seen The Odyssey, and his response was "hell no; I don't get into all that transgender crap." Okaaaay? I assumed he was referring to the casting of Elliot Page, but wanted clarification. He thought Elliot Page was the main character, and I assured him that no, he is a supporting character and that Matt Damon portrays Odysseus, the main character. He laughed, elbow nudged Jessica, and said “see, there goes that propaganda working on me again! Everywhere I look they’ve been telling me it was a movie about a transgender person!” Okaaay.
I don’t recall what came up next, but then he got passionate enough about something to blame “the Jews” and something something "lib-tards." At this point, Jessica and my gf got uncomfortable, retired to the pool, and left me to converse with this apparently right-wing nutjob. We talked civilly for a good half-hour, and I challenged each of the talking points he was parroting with calm and reason, and it ended with him deciding he needs to get off of Facebook and stop believing everything “they” tell him. He admitted that he is naïve, not smart, and subject to being swayed by the loudest voice in the room. He remains adamant on “the Jews,” though. I left that alone. I doubt I actually changed his mind on anything substantive, but fucking Christ, Jessica knows how to pick ‘em…
But my WTF is who feels comfortable enough with people they just met to just blurt out such radical beliefs without reading the room? Nothing about us reads "yeah, these folks get it" from his perspective. I'm Black-Hispanic; WTF made him comfortable enough to think I'd have any alignment with his views on "the Jews" and "lib-tards" after I'd already made it very clear I had no issue with casting transgender people in movies? The guy is a certified idiot, and he admits it himself. Jessica is always welcome, but she needs to leave that half-witted gorilla of a man-child at home in his kennel. I give their relationship maybe 6 months; Jessica is too free-spirited and liberal that she won't be indoctrinated by his beliefs, and bull-headed enough to piss him off when he finds he can't control her.
