Perfect Dark, because that was the original shooter that introduced pretty much every single feature of the genre, on the multiplayer side at least, that we now take for granted.
Not a fan of history then?
I mean, on a Windows PC then Doom was the first major multiplayer game. There was another released just before, but on Apple based PC so it never took off.

Using nostalgia to rate games is something I pretty much despise. How does it being the first game you had fun in with friends make it the best ever? How does anything being the first of anything make it any good?
How else are you going to rate something? People are rating MW2 as the best FPS ever, and I regard it as not worth the disc it's burned on. The campaign.. It's cinematic, nothing that hasn't been done before except for the terrorist scene. But that was for shock value, would have been different if they were using it as a political medium. Then that part, you know. When you jump for a ledge, roof, helicopter, etc, and miss, then another dude reaches down and grabs your wrist? How many times did they do that in MW2?
Then the difficulty is just MOAR ENEMIES! and more enemies with shotguns sitting and waiting for you to walk past.
I think this may have devolved into a MW2 rant, but the point remains. It is not only not the best FPS ever made, but quite possibly the worst generic garbage I've seen. However, note in the first post by the OP, that there was no structure given to how games are rated.
So yes, nostalgia may not be the best rating system around, but it isn't the worst.
I regard Goldeneye as alright, not necessarily the best, but it was more fun than, say, CoD4. I've yet to figure out why Deus Ex is such a great game, I'm one of the few who thinks it isn't worth legendary status, but then again I didn't get all the way through. Distractions took hold.
Truth is dependent on the person, so their truth is that Goldeneye is a good game. I'd be interested in seeing how many people call that truth.
