For sprite era, I recommend Duke 3D and Blood. Timesplitters is good, Dues Ex is godly. For new, try out Duke Forever and Serious Sam 3 when it comes out. Having a blast with DNF, look foward to Sam.

Brothers in Arms
Vietcong
Battlefield: 1942
Soldier of Fortune 2
Half-Life
007 Goldeneye

And yeah, I've been playing the Darkness and Metro 2033 again to prep myself for the sequels. Although, I doubt either will be as good as their predecessor. =/

If you ignore it's "horror" roots, F3AR (Fear 3) is definitely an amazing FPS. Not just because Paxton Fettel is cool to use, because the Dev actually bothered to try something new with the MP too, extending the replay value for the single player fanatics like me, or those who like to play Co-op.

Not sure how old you're willing to go, but I consider this to be one of the best first person shooters ever, and I'd like to recommend it.

No One Lives Forever (2000, PC). This is an extremely entertaining game and likely the funniest FPS I've played. It's a spoof and homage of the 1960s 'superspy' genre, and I've heard it described as "a combination of James Bond and Austin Powers, with a female protagonist".

It has hilarious dialogue, very varied locations, and it's so long by today's standards. The gameplay involves a pretty even mixture of running and gunning and stealth, with some gadget usage and intelligence gathering thrown in for good measure. Surprisingly obscure despite being very well received (91/100 on metacritic).

While it hasn't exactly aged well, the original Deus Ex game was beyond superb.

As far as multiplayer, I'd say the Battlefield series.

I'm not one for FPS's, but i did enjoy Duke Nukem 3D and Battlefield Vietnam.

To anyone who says Halo, i feel that series is the worst thing to ever happen to gaming, simply because the standard it has set held gaming back for many years. A graphic system that, even for it's time, wasn't the greatest (Dues Ex with more detailed textures, in my opinion), gameplay that, yes, set the standard, but can't be considered INVIGORATING (Again, i compare to Dues Ex, which I find new ways to beat every time i play it), and a story line that...well...I've watched porn with better story line. At least something is pleasured with porn, and i can't say the same with Halo.

I've had a run in with Brink, and i'm quickly falling in love with it. Recommend, but it will take time for me to think of it as the best FPS of all time, if it is worthy of that title.
