PC has upgradeable parts and therefore can always have superior harware.

All of the console games are being developed by PC's.
Unless we get to the day where consoles become upgradeable and console's can
be used to make console games it's really stupid to say PC gaming is dead.

I've watched 'The Big Picture' twice now and I doubt I'll be watching it again.

'The Big Picture' is an incredibly arrogant title for a video show, isn't it? Think about what it implies: "My name is Bob and I'm going to tell you something that you obviously can't work out on your own because I am smarter and think about this stuff".

Then we get to the content, which is a long-winded, one-sided drone about how Bob is right about all this because, you know, he's seen the Big Picture.

Lets forget about the fact I've heavily disagreed with him on both topics so far. If he actually DISCUSSED the topics instead of ranting biasedly about them, it would certainly be a far better show.

Disagree. I'd say at the very least a third of that list is at least an A rated game.
Fair point, like I said I didnt read it that thoroughly,

Total War: Shogun 2
Defense of the Ancients 2
Might and Magic 6
Age of Empires 2
King Arthur II
Sword of the Stars 2
The Sims Medieval
A Game of Thrones: Genesis
Pirates of the Black Cove
Stronghold 3
It dosent help your argument that all of those are bloody old, especially when strategy is one of the few areas where PC still excels thanks to mouse and Keyboard control. PC strategy (I think Bob also said this) is the only genre with a lot of games that are definitely better on the PC, (CIV 5 etc, the Empire series, starcraft, all of these are obviously still active.

Oh and iv been playing indie games almost exclusively for 6 months now (yes it is starting to get tedious) so dont pigeon hole me out of hand as a FPS nut if you please.

I gotta say, Bob makes some really good points here. Sure, right now your PC as a gaming platform may be cool because you can mod it and use it for other stuff, but all that's really left is for Microsoft and Sony (and maybe even Nintendo) to come out with decent operating systems for their next generations.

I have a Wii that I use to play Brawl (and... that's about it).

I have a PS3 that I use to play my RPG's, fighting games, and shooters.

And I have a PC that I use to play my strategy games (and since that's my favourite genre, that's more than enough reason to have a decent PC).

We'll see where it goes, but I think denying that PC gaming is circling the drain is just a silly thing to do.
Suppose M$ put Windows on their next xbox and it can run everything including office, then you don't have a 480 console, but a 480 PC.

"Consoles are dying", would be a bit more appropriate (though still far from the whole truth).

OT: Yeah! 1,000th post!...Am I... Am I Popular yet?
I am legitimately surprised it took until page 2 to comment on that, yes. PC gaming IS changing though and I expect many great things in the future. Hell, since I've got my new laptop I really only use my consoles as a netflix delivery device.

Or when my wife kicks me off so she can game on it.

edit.

For Bob, if you bother reading these comments...

I believe you are very mistaken, but that's ok. I still enjoy and support your work. As an intelligent denizen of the internet I believe we can have differing opinions without resorting to godwins and fireballs.

Hmm. I'm not sure if everyone will be using a mobile phone, a tablet, a laptop and a console for their separate electronic needs/ wants. Certainly, I would prefer to have it all in one place, rather than rely on four separate items. Maybe I am living in a technological bubble here (this is the UK after all, where anything with an LED sellotaped to it costs over £9000), but I can't see everyone ditching a static PC for the various bits and bobs Bob mentioned.

The technology behind a PC is still evolving in the same way as a console- More. Spelled with a zero and an A, sometimes. More processing power, more memory, more aesthetic stuff.

I find it funny that people just go along with their old arguments of how PC gaming isn't dead because of all the sales and what not as they completely ignore the actual message of the video. Your attacks aren't very effective.

I see it more as the PC being split up into multiple different outlets rather that it outright dying. Most computing control can be given to things like the Ipad in the future. Social aspects are dominating the handheld and phone markets. Gaming is being spread far and wide. Cords are being replaced by wireless and easy to use recharge stations. Printers will just get smaller and smaller until you can carry them with you. As for keyboard and precision mouse control I can only imagine what kind of innovations will be made in the future.

Very nice video Bob. It's unfortunate that so many people just read the 1st half of your title and typed out one of their tired and generic responses.
It's hard to maintain my level of civility when people come in and completely miss the point.

Yes, many of us understand the issue was not on whether PC and it's gaming software was in decline. The argument is split between both semantics and the likely function of PCs, and their appropriate functions, in future. There is a whole 15 pages explaining that right here in front of you-most of us have been on board the whole time.
Was this directed at me or others? I had never said that most if not all of the responses were what I was talking about. I said it was entertaining that some of them just followed such and old and predictable internet trend. Those with actual constructive criticism I will never go against (other than an actual constructive argument).

If I dismissed most PC arguments as rabid fanboy rants that aren't even worth acknowledging than I wouldn't be a very good game designer.

Oh dear.

This is going to get ugly.

All I'm going to say here is that it seems kind of... odd that he's putting this video on the Escapist, a site with an unusually high proportion of PC folks.

Also, he's probably right.

Now I'm gonna run before the knives come out.

honestly people, would you rather play game online, lag-free
or would you prefer to pay $15/month or $60/year to game for 10 minutes then wait a good 5 for host migration... and listen to small kids whining the whole time...
PS3 is free and lag is dependant on your internet connection...
in most cases it's dependant on the internet connection *glares at wii*

and yes I know the PS3 has free service, I love that about it!
I was glaring at the more popular 360 when I said that
well then that just sucks for anyone who can't afford a good internet connection then doesn't it :,(

more elitism makes me sad.

Well, what I have to say to this is ...'meh'. Personally (and I know I'm not in a majority) I need my PC for more than office; I program, indulge in 'ye olde programmes'.

I have a gaming console, iPhone (wishing however I'd bought something more like the HTC though), and so on. But so long as all those other products have so limited OS's that prevent me working with them they way I want and need to, my PC is saying right where it is; add to that, my PC is significantly faster than my XBox and allows me to customise many (though not all) games in ways that consoles simply forbid you from doing.

Just finished my 3rd Persona 4 game on my PC, A PS2 exclusive, or at least a console one. But you know what, I have a gaming console, its my 2nd boot - MS Windows XP SP3 for Gaming.
there are a lot of Console emulating programs, PS(1-3) Both x box's and DS, other older ones not to mention.

Wikipedia
- A personal computer (PC) is any general-purpose computer
- The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a machine designed for consumers to buy and use solely for playing video games from a personal computer.

So in a way PS3 and Xbox360 ARE PC's, because they do more then just games!
So I have to conclude that the Consoles ARE DEAD.
PC is a Multi purpose machine, HD TV no problem just replace the monitor with a TV set, for a example.
PC is the one thing that everything is trying to be, consloes, phones, but the PC is everything ....

Home cinema
Phone = Laptop + Skype + wifi
Gaming console

Before you start calling me names, I am a PC Fan-boy and so are YOU, wanna proof me wrong, go smash everything that uses the internet, because by default internet is not necessary for gaming, so its a PC thing!

Frankly I hate Consoles for Taking an PC, taking out the functionality, Selling it at least 3 times the price it original came and making exclusive things for this artificial creation. My mothers Laptop has stronger Hardware then PS3 and Xbox360 and it costs less!!!!

Thank god for consoles, where else would the developers put the money they use for publishing multi-platform games. That would be so terrible if they would use it to make Better games in shorter time spans, or would it not? Hmm.

Sincerely Kouryuu

It dosent help your argument that all of those are bloody old,
Bwah? Aside from Age of Empires 2 (which is probably an error and probably is referring to Age of Empires Online, unreleased), Might and Magic 6 (which is also an error and probably referring to Might and Magic Heroes 6, out May) and Shogun 2: Total War (which was released today), all of the games on that list have yet to be released.

Wow, all the hundreds of posts with people pointing out that all of Bob's alternatives combined were basically doing the same thing as a single PC, just with closed software/hardware paths and more restrictions on capabilities... they just flew over your head, didn't they?

What is pathetic is your straw arguments. People here have been very articulate in their constructive criticisms - even more so than the flamebait that Bob posted.
Don't think I hadn't seen that. I see it happening because of the fact that it makes money and so many people are converting to these new devices that I don't see it stopping. Also I'd prefer that you'd not call out my arguments pathetic considering if you WERE articulate in your criticisms than I wasn't talking about you. People posting lengthy lists of PC exclusives or ranting about how great steam is without acknowledging the actual video points is who I mean.

These kind of threads always explode into these kinds of arguments. It's unfortunate I couldn't post a quick observation and my own opinion on the matter without getting attacked about how I was a typical selfish internet prick.

This feels oddly saddening, yet exciting at the same time.

Does this mean it will be pointless to get a gaming PC in the near-future? I mean, if I no longer need one, that great, but it would suck if my parents FINALLY got me one by the time HAVING one is pointless.

I just love the ultimate irony that this video stating that PC gaming is effectively dead came out at a time in which advertisements for the PC game Shogun Total War 2 are plastered all over the site. Just beautiful timing.

I'm curious how many times the PC has been happily dying since 198something will pop up?

OT: I'm actually old enough at 18 for kids to look at me because I tell them what a box PC looks like. Its rather scary.

And cybernetic eyeball implanting for the win. If I can look like a terminator and customize the colour (that blood red just gets tiring when you see it in EVERY movie where one's used, and yes, I know why its red) its automatic win.
