I think "bag of issues" characters stand out in stark contrast (for better or worse) because comic book characters are typically very bland and flat in terms of personality. The only difference between the male and female characters is one group is sexually objectified. But at least female heroes usually have personal issues beyond "my girlfriend might get hurt".
Face it, internet; comics are the OG version of Twilight, a male version of romance fiction that sells by the boatload without relying on things like quality writing or interesting characters. They're fantasy vessels for us to dress up and pretend like we're Spider-man, beating the piss out of Doc Ock, just like prepubescent girls fantasize about being Bella, kissing the shit out of Edward. Most heroes are morally upright do-gooders who's only moral quandry usually comes in "what if I hurt the one's I love by continuing to do this awesomely righteous thing set by arbitrary standards?" Nothing of consequence ever happens because if either heroes or villains ever truly died that would mean a drop in sales. So let's stop pretending like there's only ONE issue with comics that needs to be fixed.
But like I said, that's MOST comics. I'm sure there's third party books that don't have the same trappings as the big name brands, but then you'll rarely see the internet talking about those.
